Abstract

The liquid level in a liquid/vapour separator vessel 6 in an evaporator system suitable for the concentration of radio-active solutions is maintained constant by means of two interconnected vessels 10 and 12, the control being based merely on the balance of fluid in the three vessels. Vessel 10 supplies feed solution through line 17 to a boiler 4 which is connected to the separator vessel 6 and condenser 8, the vessel 12 receiving distillate through line 18 and having a distillate overflow exit 20. The level in vessel 6 is kept constant by recycling a proportion of the distillate through line 14 to vessel 10 whenever the level in separator vessel 6 drops beneath a set value. The level in vessel 6 is the same as that in vessel 10, since a pressure equalising line 22 joins the two, and may also join vessel 12, as in Fig. 1. Alternatively when vessels 10 and 12 are interconnected only by line 14 vessel 12 may be above vessel 10, as in Fig. 3 not shown. A non-return valve is provided in line 14 to prevent solution passing from vessel 10 to vessel 12.
