Abstract
<PICT:0928470/III/1> In a multi-effect evaporator system, for concentrating aqueous solutions continuously, the sub-atmospheric pressure in the final effect 4 is automatically controlled by a pressure recordercontroller PRC4 and the flow of aqueous solution into, and the flow of concentrate out of, the final effect are automatically controlled by a temperature recorder-controller TRC4 and a liquid-level recorder-controller LRC4, respectively, so that a concentrate of constant composition is withdrawn from the system. A vacuum is applied to the final effect and the pressure within it is maintained constant by an air-bleed 11 controlled by a differential pressure cell PRC4. The temperature of the boiling liquid in the down-corner of the final effect is measured by platinum resistance thermometer 14. When controller TRC4 indicates that the desired solute concentration has been reached, valve 12 is opened and concentrate flows out of the system through line 13. At the same time, controller LRC4 causes valve 10 to open, and solution flows from effect 3 into effect 4. The concentration of solution in effect 4 is thus decreased and its boiling temperature drops so that controller TRC4 causes valve 12 to close again. When the liquid-level in effect 4 is restored to its predetermined valve, valve 10 will be closed by controller LRC4. The concentration of aqueous uranyl nitrate solution is referred to.
