Abstract

A butterfly closure 10, which co-operates with a part-spherical surface in a two-part casing, is mounted on trunnions 13 fast with side plates 18 that interconnect a circular main plate 15 to an auxiliary plate 16 having a width of e.g. 40% that of the main plate 15. The plates 15, 16 are also connected by a lattice of trapezium-shaped members 17 which when the valve is open lie parallel to the direction of fluid flow preferably the plates 15, 16 are similarly disposed. The mean length of each member 17 measured vertically as seen in Fig. 1 is substantially less than the width of the main plate 15 and greater than the width of the auxiliary plate 16. In modifications, the auxiliary plate may be octagonal in plan view or formed of two or more plates which in cross-section have one or more obtuse inclined angles moreover, the auxiliary plate may be formed as or have attached thereto a part-cylindrical member to produce a streamlined effect. The "V"-shaped lattice of members 17 may be replaced by one wherein the latter do not join each other at their connecting points to the plates 15, 16.
