Abstract

A cartridge ramming device for introducing cartridges into the breech of an automatic gun comprises a rammer member 2 having a ramming dent 1 pivoted at 15 thereto and biased by a spring 18 into an active position (as shown) wherein it engages the base of a cartridge to feed it into the breech on forward movement of the member 2. A cam 20 pivoted on a shaft 21 on which is also pivoted rammer dent actuating means 24 controls the positioning of the dent 1. The parts are in the position shown on forward movement of the member 2 so that the dent 1 can engage a cartridge. An abutment 29 is provided on the gun and the lever 24 rides over this on forward movement, being displaced through an angle less than that required to move the dent from the active position. However, on the return movement of the member 2 the lever 24 is caught by the abutment 29 and is rotated about pivot 21 to cause cam 20 to rotate and pivot the dent upwardly into an inactive position wherein it is clear of the path taken by an ejected cartridge case. The latter when it has passed the dent 1 actuates the lever 24 to return it to a position wherein cam 20 permits the spring 18 to return the dent 1 into the active position ready for the next forward movement. The member 2 in the form of a trolley is guided by wheels 3 engaging in grooves 4 in a reciprocating rammer member 8. The latter has pulleys 9 over which pass a chain 10 secured to a stationary lug 12 of the gun and the trolley 2 so that as the member 8 reciprocates under the action of piston motor 5 the trolley 2 will also reciprocate but at twice the speed.
