Abstract

A method for preparing an acicular, crystalline, titanium dioxide product of pigment quality, characterized in that: (a) an aqueous colloidal suspension of titanium dioxide forming nuclei of seed particles is mixed with a solution of titanium chloride acid having a minimum chloride/titanium ratio of 4, a minimum hydrogen/titanium ions ratio of 4, and a titanium concentration between 50 and 85 grams per liter, said colloidal suspension providing between 4 and 10% by weight of the amounts of titanium in the resulting mixture and said colloidal suspension being prepared by heating an aqueous titanium chloride solution having a chloride/titanium ratio between about 1.5 and about 4, a pH between 0.3 and 0.7 and a concentration of titanium between 8 and 30 grams per liter; (b) said mixture is heated to hydrolyze the titanium chloride present therein and precipitate the amounts of titanium; (c) said amounts of precipitated titanium are separated from the reaction mixture; and (d) the precipitate is calcined at a temperature between 700 and 900º C for a period between 0.5 and 6 hours to thereby prepare said crystalline acicular titanium dioxide product.
