Abstract
Pigment grade crystalline, acicular TiO2 has a cross-sectional diameter of 0.05 to 0.2 m , a length of 0.3 to 0.8 m and the ratio of length: diameter is from 3 to 8. The TiO2 may be prepared by adding an aqueous colloidal suspension of TiO2 seed to an aqueous, acidic "master" solution of titanium chloride, hydrolysing the mixture, separating the TiO2 precipitated and heating it to produce the novel TiO2. The seed is prepared from an aqueous TiCl4 solution having Cl: Ti ratio of 1.5 to 4, a pH of 0.3 to 0.7 and a Ti concentration equivalent to 8 to 30 g./l. This solution is heated to 60 DEG to 80 DEG C. for 4 to 15 min. or more and added, in quantity sufficient to supply 4 to 10% of the Ti concentration in the final mixture, to a master solution having a minimum Cl: Ti ratio of 4, a minimum H+ : Ti ratio of 4 and a Ti concentration equivalent to 30 to 50 g./l. The resulting mixture is heated at, say, 100 DEG C. and 1 atm. pressure, or preferably at e.g. 190 DEG C. and autogenous pressure, and the TiO2 precipitated by hydrolysis is separated by filtration or centrifugation, washed and calcined at 700 DEG to 900 DEG C. for 0.5 to 6 hours. TiCl4 leach liquor produced by dissolution of titaniferous material with HCl and subsequent removal of Fe by solvent extraction may be employed in the preparation of both seed and master solutions.
