Abstract
A method of manufacturing a quartz electric discharge lamp comprising: arranging a glass envelope having an ampoule portion with tubular neck portions on opposite sides in a pair of vitreous closure tubes each of which has a conductor feed past hermetically through the solid front end portion of the tube and a passage extending through the tube to an opening located behind the solid part; inserting the solid parts of the closure tubes into said neck portions; applying heat to form tight connections between the end tubes of the neck parts and the closure tubes at points beyond said openings while sweeping with inert gas through the closure tubes to prevent oxidation of the conductors feeding; and then closing the closure tubes and crushing the neck portions on said solid portions to fuse the parts together to obtain solid vitreous necks.
