Abstract

Apparatus for hot-stretching artificial filaments comprises a steam-jacketed metal tube and one or more orifices in the tube wall, located within the steam jacket and connecting the interior of the tube with the jacket space. In one embodiment (not shown), a tube 7, through which a filament bundle passes while being stretched, is surrounded by a steam jacket 10 having steam inlet 11 and combined steam outlet and trap 12. Steam contacts the filaments through spaced orifices 9 in the wall of tube 7. The ends of tube 7 are constricted by coaxial narrow tubes 8 of a diameter 3-10 times that of the filament bundle. In a further embodiment (not shown), the entire length of the tube 7 is of a diameter 3-10 times the diameter of the filament bundle. Alternatively, the ends of the tube may be constricted by movable throttle plates. In operation, a bundle of filaments, e.g. acrylic polymers or cellulose acetate, is drawn through the tube 7 from bottom to top whilst undergoing stretch. Steam supplied to the jacket 10 enters orifices 9 and contacts the filaments. Since the only surface within the tube at a lower temperature than the steam is that of the filaments, loss of heat by condensation of the steam on the walls of the tube is avoided.
