Abstract
Medicinal tablets are coated by tumbling a bed of the tablets and applying thereto a coating fluid comprising a low boiling (below 100 DEG C.) organic solvent system in which is dissolved at least one film-forming material which is composed of 80-100% of a non-toxic film-forming material soluble in water or in an aqueous medium of pH 1-7 and 20-0% of a non-toxic, film-forming, water-insoluble material and directing towards the bed of tablets, simultaneously with the application of the coating fluid, a gas stream having a velocity sufficient to exchange the gas present in the vicinity of the bed at least 20 times per minute. Specified soluble coating materials are hydroxypropylmethyl-cellulose, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, polyvinylpyrrolidone and high molecular weight polymers of ethylene oxide. Specified insoluble polymers include shellac, cellulose esters, carboxylated vinyl acetate resins, carboxyl-containing styrene polymers, polymers of alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and copolymers thereof with methacrylic acid, fumaric acid rosin adducts and polyesters modified with rosin. The conventional "air suspension" coating technique is a suitable process for applying the coating, or alternatively, conventional pan-coating methods modified by directing a relatively high velocity gas stream towards the tumbling tablets may be used.ALSO:Medicinal tablets are coated by tumbling a bed of the tablets and applying thereto a coating fluid comprising a low boiling (below 100 DEG C) organic solvent system in which is dissolved at least one film-forming material which is composed of 80 to 100% of a non-toxic film-forming material soluble in water or in an aqueous medium of pH 1-7 and 20 to 0% of a non-toxic, film-forming, water-insoluble material and directing towards the bed of tablets, simultaneously with the application of the coating fluid, a gas stream having a velocity sufficient to exchange the gas present in the vicinity of the bed at least 20 times per minute.
