Abstract

A water-soluble polymer or derivatives thereof in which the polymer is made by treating a homo- or co-polymer of acrolein or methacrolein with a strong base to produce hydroxy carboxylic acids by Cannizzaro's reaction is used as a flocculating aid in sedimenting solids dispersed in liquids. The m.w. of the polymers is preferably 200,000 to 500,000.ALSO:Homopolymers of or copolymers of acrolein and methacrolein are subjected to strong bases in the Cannizzaro reaction to produce hydroxy carboxylic acids. The free aldehyde groups may be shielded to produce a desired acid. The aldehyde groups which are shielded may be changed to chlorides, amines, oximes, acetals, mercaptals hydrazones, hydrazides and Schiff bases before and after the Cannizzaro reaction. Other modifications may be made by hydrogenation, oxidation or esterification. Preferably 5 to 10% of the aldehyde groups undergo dismutation. Comonomers exemplified are maleric fumaric and acrylic acids, maleic anhydride vinyl chloride or acetate and methyl and ethyl acrylates. The bases used should be stronger than ammonium hydroxide.
