The plastic surface is (1) swollen by contact with a liquid contg. an alpha, beta-unsatd mono- or di-carboxylic acid anhydride or mixture, or mixture of these with copolymerisable vinylic or allylic unsatd cpds. (2) excess fluid removed and pressed in contact with the metal part (3) before during or immediately after (2), subjected to ionising radiation to permanently fix the diffused unsatd cpds. and (4) opt. re-pressed at a higher temp. than in (2).
