Abstract

N-Acetylhomocysteine thiolactone is prepd. by demethylation of methionine with an aq. 57% soln of HI contg. phosphorus and in presence of acetic anhydride, then acetylation of the hydriodide formed acetic anhydride in presence of lead acetate. The process avoids the reduction stage required when methionine is demethylated in presence of H2SO4. The product is used in the prepn. of drugs, cosmetics and photographic emulsions.
