Abstract

A water soluble synthetic resin is formed by modifying an alkyd resin containing double bonds with a vinyl monomer and an alpha-beta unsaturated acid in the presence of a catalyst, the alpha-beta unsaturated acid being present in sufficient quantity to ensure that the acid number of the resultant resin is greater than 40, the hydroxyl equivalent of the resultant resin being from 100 to 200, and then solubilizing the resultant resin with ammonia or an organic water soluble base. The unmodified alkyd resin may be prepared from a fatty oil, a polyvalent alcohol and an anhydride of a dibasic acid. In the examples the vinyl monomer is styrene, the alpha-beta unsaturated acid is methacrylic acid and the organic water soluble base is triethylamine or dimethylamino-ethanol. A stoving enamel is prepared from the resin solution of the invention and carbon black. Specification 665,195 is referred to.
