Abstract

1419833 Water redispersible polymer compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 13 March 1973 [13 March 1972] 11883/73 Heading C3P A film-forming latex composition having an average particle size of 500 to 10,000 Angstroms and which when dried at a pH greater than 7 is redispersible in water to form a latex having substantially the same particle size as the original latex, comprises an aqueous dispersion of particles of a copolymer of 1-10 wt. per cent of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and a balance of a polymerizable water-insoluble ethylenic monomer composition, and an effective amount to provide water redispersibility, of a six-membered ring carbocyclic compound having two vicinal carboxyl or carboxylic salt groups which is soluble in aqueous alkaline media; said copolymer being film-forming below 95‹ C. The dried composition is also claimed. The polymer may contain, as the comonomer(s), units derived from a conjugated aliphatic diene, an alkenyl aromatic compound such as styrene, an acrylic ester, vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate. The carbocyclic compound may be a phthalic acid, a 1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic acid, or a hexahydrophthalic acid, and is preferably used in an amount of 2-8 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of polymer. The latex may be prepared by either mixing the carbocyclic compound physically with a preformed latex of the polymer, polymerization in the presence of said carbocyclic compound or by forming the carbocyclic compound in situ during the polymerization at acid pH to form the polymer latex. In the latter method, the carbocyclic compound may be formed by reaction between fumaric acid or a monomethyl, monoethyl or monopropyl ester of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid in which the carboxyl groups are both attached to the doubly bonded carbon atoms, and part of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer which is present in the reaction mixture. Acid monomers used in the examples are itaconic acid, fumaric acid, acrylic acid, monomethylmaleate, monoethylmaleate, monopropylmaleate and monobutylmaleate.
