Abstract

An aqueous dispersion for treating glass fibres comprises 1,5-9% of starch, 0,5-6% of a non-ionic lubricant, and 0,05-1,5% of a cationic lubricant, the starch consisting of 50-70% of amylose and 30-50% of amylopectin. The starch may be the hybrid maize starch known as "Amylon". The non-ionic lubricant is a natural or synthetic glyceride oil, which may be hydrogenated. The cationic lubricant may be tetraethylene pentamine distearate. 0,025-2,5% of an emulsifier, e.g. polyethylene glycol or polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate, may also be present. An example is given of the use of hybrid maize starch which has been cooked in aqueous suspension after the pH has been adjusted to 6,0\sB0,2 by the addition of hydrochloric acid. After coating the glass fibres are formed into strands or yarn, dried, and wound.
