Abstract

An aqueous composition for sizing glass fibres comprises, as film forming agent, 2-4% of hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl amylose in the form of a derivative of an amylose-containing starch having an amylose content of 50-100%, said derivative containing 0.1-30.0 hydroxyalkyl groups per 100 d-glucopyranose units of the amylose portion of the starch. The high amylose-containing starch is obtained by the fractionation of ordinary starch or from hybrid maize, wheat, potato, tapioca, sago, or rice; and is solubilized by heating in water, e.g. at 180 DEG F. The composition may include, as additional film forming agent, ordinary starch, partially cross-bonded or acid treated starch, or emulsified low molecular weight polyethylene or polypropylene. The composition may also contain hydrogenated cotton seed oil or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxide (as lubricant), the alkyl imidazoline reaction product of tetraethylene pentamine, stearic acid and acetic acid (as textile softener), formaldehyde (as bactericide), and a cationic or non-ionic wetting agent. The composition may have a total solid content of 2-8%, a viscosity of 1-100 centipoises at 20 DEG C. and a pH of 5.0-5.4. The size may be applied at 125-135 DEG F. to glass fibres during formation into strands. The sized strands may be dried at 70 DEG F. at a relative humidity of 70%. The fibres may be coated with 0.7-2.0% of size solids.
