Abstract

1364965 Sizing glass fibres PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 9 Aug 1972 [10 Aug 1971] 37116/72 Heading D1P Filaments drawn as a strand from molten glass are treated with a size comprising starch (cooked to the swelling stage but not to the bursting stage) as 15 to 25% by weight of the non-aqueous portion of the size and the size dried on the filaments. The strands may be used in continuous or chopped form as a reinforment for polyester or epoxy resins. Preferably the non-aqueous portion of the size also comprises 25 to 35% of epoxy resin, 5 to 10% of melamine formaldehyde resin, 1 to 6% of ethylene oxidepolypropylene glycol condensate, 8 to 16% gamma methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane and 8 to 16% gammaglycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane. The starch should be 50 to 60% by weight amylose, obtained from corn, wheat, potato, tapioca, waxy maze, sago or rice. The size may contain 3.4 to 3.8% polyethylene glycol monoleate emulsifier, 1.8 to 2.2% octylphenoxypolyoxyethylenethanol as nonionic surfactant up to 8% polyvinylpyrrolidone as a film former, a cationic fatty acid amide lubricant and acetic acid. A plurality of glass filaments may, be sized just after extrusion by a roller which is partly submerged in sizing solution, or by a pad applicator, and then grouped into a strand. Size comprises 0.5 to 5% of the strand weight. A strand having 6700 yards/pound and comprising 400 filaments of diameter 0.00036 inch is split after sizing into four groups of 100 filaments.
