Abstract

Sulphur dioxide in industrial gases is recovered in the form of ammonium sulphate by feeding an organic base of basicity lower than ammonia into the stream of sulphur dioxide-containing gas and introducing air or oxygen if necessary to make oxygen available, whereby the sulphur dioxide is converted into the sulphate of the organic base, recovering the sulphate and decomposing it with ammonia to produce ammonium sulphate. The organic base is recovered and recycled. Suitable bases are pyridine, quinoline and their homologues and certain alkylanilines and ethanolamines. They are introduced in the form of a mist. The sulphate may be recovered by dry or wet collectors in the former case, the dry sulphate is extracted with an aqueous solvent, e.g. a solution of ammonium sulphate in the latter case, the liquid used may be ammonium sulphate which is later treated with ammonia to decompose the sulphate of the base.
