Abstract
<PICT:0905287/III/1> An apparatus for producing a stack 33 of unexpanded honeycomb material comprises a support 1 for the stack 33, a head 7 mounted for repeated forward and return motion over the support 1, a device 9, 11 on the head 7 arranged to deposit a set of parallel bands of adhesive on the stack 33 during the return motion of the head 7 and a set parallel to and staggered relative to the first set during the forward motion, and a conveyer 19, 21 mounted for reciprocation over the support 1 in synchronism with the head 7 for engaging sheet material 27, carrying it over the adhesive bands, and there releasing it. The head 7 reciprocates horizontally between positions 7, 71 and carries a pivoted member 13 in which rollers 9, 11 are mounted, the rollers being fed with adhesive by transfer rollers 17. The apparatus operates as follows:-a sucker 23 on a pivoted arm picks up a sheet 27 from a stack 29 and an arm 31 moves from 311 to provide a guide, a sucker 21 on the head 7 engaging the sheet 27. The sucker 23 is cut off, and the head 7 carries the sheet over the stack 33, the roller 9 adding the second set of bands to the top sheet on the stack. At the position 71 the sucker 21 releases the sheet 27 and a sucker 19 engages a fresh sheet from a stack 35. During the return motion, the roller 11 deposits the first set of bands on the sheet 27, the member 13 having been pivoted. The support 1 and supports 3, 5 for the stacks 29, 35 are adjusted vertically during operation. All operations are carried out automatically. In a modification, the supports 3, 5 are replaced by supply rolls, cutters being provided adjacent bars 31, 37. In another modification, the conveyer is separate from the adhesive-depositing head and reciprocates in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the head. The conveyer takes sheets from stacks at one or both sides of the table 1 and releases them in the path of the head 7 which thus prints a number of stacks 33 simultaneously. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the top sheet on each stack 29, 35 is moved by a sucker over a ramp towards the support 1 before being engaged by the suckers 19, 21 which are movable vertically, the head 7 being reciprocated by an endless chain, and in a modification of this embodiment, a pair of rails are substituted for each ramp. The rollers 9, 11 are driven in opposite directions by an electric motor. Specification 591,772 is referred to.
