Abstract
Improvements introduced in the preparation of compositions suitable for use as transparent coating compositions and as binders in pigmented coating compositions, characterized in that said compositions comprise a mixture of component (1) 62 to 93.5 parts by weight of an aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble copolymer of (a) 80 to 98 parts by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, vinyl-toluene, acrylonitrile and alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, said alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and (b) 2 to 10 parts by weight of a monomer selected from the group consisting of acryloamide and methacryloamide and the reaction products of said amides with formaldehyde, including the methylol and methoxymethyl derivatives, component (2). 1 to 5 parts by weight of a volatile tertiary amine and component (3) 5 to 40 parts by weight of a water soluble aminoplast (4) 0.1 to 3.5 parts by weight of a compound selected from the group consisting of the ammonium semi-amide salt and the diammonium salt of di-isobutylene-maleic anhydride copolymer, the ammonium salts and lower alkylaminine of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids and the salts of ammonium and lower alkylamine of maleic vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer, but, when said composition is used as a binder in pigmented coating compositions, said component (4) is mandatory, forming the sum of the parts by weight of the components (1), (2), (3), and (4) 100 parts by weight of the total composition (base of solids).
