DESCRIPCIÓNDESCRIPTION
Tapón de cierre y sobreselladoClosing and sealing cap
This invention relates to a closure combination, comprising a closure cap and tamper evident closure overlay, for shipping containers such as drums.
Antecedentes de la invenciónBackground of the Invention
In today's global environmental policy, the safety of drum products is being increasingly closely monitored. This, coupled with the need for normal handling control, leads to a trend towards greater use of effective seals that indicate handling in all types of shipping containers. It has long been a common practice to apply over-seals of one kind or another with special hand and power tools that were capable of folding a metal portion of the over-seal tightly around a vertical neck in the opening designed to receive the seal. This type of over-sealing is rather expensive, as are the tools for its application. Furthermore, the application stage itself requires quite intensive work and is relatively inefficient. Accordingly, various hand-applied over-seals have been released which, to a certain degree, avoid having to use the above-mentioned application tools. These hand applied over-seals, for the most part, are easily snapped onto the neck of the container opening and, almost always in the usual manner, easily snapped off. Although these snap-on plastic over-seals serve to decorate a container, such as a 208,175-liter (55-gallon) drum, providing the closure area with a finished look and some added degree of cleanliness, there is still a strong desire to improve from the drum safety point of view. For such drum seal seals to be effective, they have to meet several rather demanding criteria. Obviously, the application by hand has to be simple and relatively effortless to satisfy the normal linear filling speeds. Once the drum has been transported, the ability of the over seal to prevent unauthorized access to the contents of the drum is of primary importance. This means that the seal cannot be physically removed without destroying it or without making such unauthorized access clearly perceptible, so that the seal cannot be reapplied unchanged to the drum closure. In this regard, currently commonly used hand-applied plastic sealants for both steel and plastic drums are, for the most part, forced by leveraging in an undetected manner, particularly when in a heated state. In other words "they are easy to put on, easy to take off". Also important is the ability of over-sealing to withstand unintentional damage during handling and shipping. Commonly used tamper detection devices, such as frangible lock rings, shrink bands, and the like, found in consumer packaging, are not entirely suitable for use in 208.175 liter (55 gallon) drums. It can easily be seen that any inadvertent or accidental damage to the tamper resistant over-seal immediately raises the question: Has the drum safety been compromised or compromised in any way, or is it simply this damage that should be expected to occur? result from the usual manipulation ?. This aspect requires that any tamper-detecting element be robust enough to eliminate any question of whether an unauthorized entry has, in fact, occurred.
A performance criterion, also of great importance, is the ease with which the seal can be removed from the underlying drum seal in an authorized manner, so that subsequent replacement of the seal is not possible. Typically, this requires destruction of the over seal in some way to prevent reuse. In this regard, the use of sharp cutting or puncture utensils is not desirable, due to the likelihood of injury or accidental damage to the underlying closure. Thus, in addition to the robust construction of the over-seal, another additional advantageous attribute is the ability to remove it by hand.
[Col. 1, líneas 13 a 22]. DE-A-36 37 644 discloses a combination of closing and over-sealing cap that shows tampering for transport containers 11, with the closing cap 2 and the over-sealing having 3 hidden complementary interlocking elements 7, 8, 10, of snap fit, and a frangible portion 9 to allow removal of the cap seal. The interlocking elements comprise: "On the underside of the sealing cover (3), two half-shells (7) are integrally formed that penetrate the stop cavity between the wrench fastening elements (5), half-shells that -when the sealing cap (3) is fitted with a spring-hole- they are applied with the help of stop projections (8) -available at their lower end- behind corresponding notches (10) in the side wall of the cavity of stop and because, above the stopping projections (8), predetermined breaking notches (9) are arranged in the outer jacket of the half-shells (7). " [Cabbage. 1, lines 13 to 22]. The notch 10 is shown in Figures 1 and 2 extending only on each side of the wrench fastening elements 5. Furthermore, the relative angular position of the plug and the over-seal is critical to fit them together, as the half-shells 7 could jam the wrench fasteners 5.
Objetivo de la invenciónObject of the invention
An object of the present invention is to provide a solution to tamper detection problems of the sealing plug and over-sealing combination evidencing tampering, as described with respect to DE-A-3637644.
Exposición de la invenciónDisclosure of the invention
According to the present invention, a combination of closure cap and closure over-sealing evidencing tampering for shipping containers comprises a closure cap having a cylindrical cup-shaped body with pins, to which a wrench can be applied, axially extending around the inner periphery of the side wall of the plug and a radially and circumferentially extending segmental groove formed in the side wall, and an over-seal having axially extending elastic legs, each with a foot that extends radially for snap-fit, concealed complementary interlocking application with radial ribbed notches and a frangible portion, which can be seen, to allow removal of over-sealing of the plug; wherein the internal locking segmental groove is formed by a radial notch at the base of each leg, as defined in claim 1.
When authorized to remove, manual tearing of the visible, frangible portion of the over seal results in the mutual application of the interlocking elements being released and the over seal being easily removed. However, unlike the stamping of DE-A-36 37 644, the one of the present invention is more obviously destroyed and left completely unusable for resealing. The present invention also extends to closure plugs according to the combinations of the present invention.
According to a further embodiment of the present invention, the closure plug has lugs, on which a wrench can be applied, that extend axially and are evenly spaced around the inner periphery of the side wall of the plug, and may be the spacing between the temples at least as large as the width of the temples.
The foregoing and additional properties of the present invention are illustrated, by way of example, in the following description and drawings.

In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 5, a wall 1 of a container, such as an industrial size plastic drum, has a vertical neck 2 defining an internally threaded opening in the wall of the container. The neck 2 terminates at its upper end in an annular joint seat 3a surrounded by a vertical collar 4. A peripheral annular flange 5 is located immediately below the collar 4.
A cup-shaped closure plug 6, having a bottom wall 7 and an externally threaded side wall 8, is screwed into the neck 2. The plug has a circumferentially enlarged head 9 with a gasket retaining groove 10 and a gasket sealing elastic 11 on its lower surface. Considering the top surface of the plug in Figure 3, there are a series of four lugs 12, on which an equally spaced spanner wrench can be applied, which are hollowed out as indicated at 13. Also, it can be seen that the width of the legs 12 is slightly less than the width of the spaces 14 between them. Each temple has two surfaces 15, on which a radially extending wrench can be applied, and a guide surface 16 that faces radially inward. The base of each leg 12, when attached to the bottom wall 7 of the plug, is radially notched to form a locking groove 17 designed to interlock with the closure override in the manner described hereinafter.
The sealing overlay 20 consists of an unperforated lid, molded from synthetic plastic resin, having a disk-like top wall 21, surrounded by a peripherally hanging skirt 22. A segmented collar hangs from the central portion of the cap, consisting of a series of elongated leg segments 23 axially, clearly shown in Fig. 4. Each segment ends at its distal end in a foot 24 projecting radially outward with a lower cam surface 25. A tear strip 26 is formed in the cap and is defined by a pair of incised lines 27 which extend diametrically through the upper wall 21, for the purpose of intersecting the segmented collar shown, for illustrative purposes, with three of the segments 23 on one side of the tear strip 26 and with three segments on the other side of said strip. As the incised lines 27 approach the cap skirt 22, they diverge outward at 28 and continue down through the skirt, which includes the circumferentially enlarged portion 22a, to the edge of the skirt. A tear tab 29 extends outwardly from each end of the tear strip and is provided with a raised lip 30 from the outer edge to facilitate grip.
In practice, the stopper 6 is screwed into the vertical neck 2 of a transport container, such as a blow molded plastic jerry can, and tightened with a suitable stopper wrench designed to exert force against surfaces 15, in which a wrench can be applied, from the pins 12. The tightening torque applied in this material causes the gasket 11 to be compressed against the neck gasket seat 3, providing a liquid-tight seal. The over-seal 20 is then placed on the cap, the segmented collar being generally axially aligned with the central portion of the cap defined by the pins, on which a wrench can be applied. By simply tightening the override onto the plug by hand, the cam drive surfaces 25 on the segmented feet 24 are caused to deflect the segments 23 radially inwardly by vigorously contacting the top of the lugs 12, where the apply a spanner. As the segmented feet move axially along the temple guide surfaces 16, the free edge of the skirt contacts the shoulder 5 of the neck, causing the extension 22a of the skirt to expand thereon. In the fully seated position, the segmented feet 25 snap into the grooves 17 of the lugs, where a wrench can be applied, re-expanding outwardly to their molded position. This snap fit interlock application permanently secures over sealing to the stopper and of course the stopper to the container opening as the pins, on which a wrench can be applied, become inaccessible. In fact, as seen in Figure 1, the segmented collar itself is inaccessible for any kind of tool to force leverage, making unauthorized removal of the over-seal extremely difficult, if not impossible, without destroying it or indeed leaving evidence very obvious tampering. In order to achieve the necessary security, the arcuate grooves 17 extend laterally, are arranged completely below the upper surface of the cap head and open in an axial plane. The design of the closure cap and the over-seal is such that the latter will snap with the cap regardless of its relative angular position. The over-seal 20 is a fit with interference on the flange 5 of the neck of the container.
To gain authorized access to the contents of the container, a tear tab 29 is grasped, with the aid of the raised flange 30, and is pulled by pulling outward, separating the tear strip 26 along the incised lines 28 and 27 of the rest of the lid. Removal of this upper wall section allows the segmented collar to crush; releasing the segmented feet 25 from the grooves 17. This release situation occurs when the tearing action reaches the far side 4 of the upper wall 21. At this point, the over-seal, destroyed and released, simply rises from the neck 2, still in one piece, so that loose fragments of the lid do not become a problem. Once the over-sealing has been started, not only is there security against the possible previous opening of the container, but also the cap and the seat of the surrounding seal are kept free of dirt and uncontaminated.
Various other changes or modifications are possible in the closure combination of the present invention; for example, the number and spacing of the collar segments could be varied.
