Abstract

An improved resistance to abrasion and creasing is conferred upon fabrics composed wholly or partly of regenerated cellulose by impregnating the fabric with an aqueous solution of ureaformaldehyde resin-forming ingredients, including an acidic catalyst, wherein the molecular proportion of formaldehyde to urea is greater than 1.6 : 1, drying, and thereafter insolubilising the resin by heating in an atmosphere containing not less than 10 per cent of superheated steam. The content of superheated steam in the atmosphere may be varied up to 100 per cent. The impregnating solution may comprise a crystalline intermediate condensation product of a urea-formaldehyde resin and the catalyst may be a mixture of calcium chloride and boric acid, ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate or aluminium chloride. The molecular proportion of formaldehyde to urea ranges in the examples from 2.5 : 1 to 4 : 1. Latices of natural or synthetic rubber, stearamidomethylpyridinium chloride, octadecyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, those polysiloxanes which confer water repellent properties or wax emulsions may be incorporated in the solution. The fabric may be a mixture of viscose or cuprammonium rayon and wool and, during or immediately after drying, the impregnated fabric may be calendered, Schreinered, embossed, friction-glazed or pleated. During drying the fabric may be shrunk on a suitably equipped stenter or machine for producing controlled compressive shrinkage. Specifications 449,243, 695,703, 704,143 and 713,002 are referred to.
