Abstract

Al (alloys) are coated with a hard, adherent, smooth, uniform, corrosion-resistant coating by anodising in an electrolyte contg. an alkali metal silicate, a peroxide, a soluble carboxylic organic acid and a fluoride. The potential is raised to 300V in 1-5 sec. and then raised to 450 V within a few mins.. A V cpd. may also be present to impart colour. Pref. silicate is K, Na or Li silicate, K tetra- or K fluorosilicate peroxide is K, Na, Li or Cs peroxide acid is acetic, pergonic, propionic or tartaric acid fluoride is HF, fluorosilicic acid, NaF, KF or LiF or mixts. of these. Bath is held at 0.5-30 Be. Cathode is a separate metal electrode or the container. Bath for anodising Al (alloy) articles is claimed contg.: an alkali metal silicate, a peroxide, a carboxylic organic acid and a fluoride, pref. in respective concn. of: 1-200 cc/l 1-20 g/l 1-30 cc/l and 1-30 cc/l.
