Definitions
- the invention relates to a handling aid for the assembly of electrical ribbon cables, comprising two clamping cheeks which are hinged to one another about a pivot axis and have clamping surfaces facing one another, which together form a clamping mouth into which a ribbon cable to be assembled can be inserted in an open state in which the clamping surfaces are at an angle to one another, and in which the ribbon cable can be clamped in a closed state in which the clamping surfaces are parallel to one another.
- Such handling aids are well known in the form of flat-nose pliers or flat tweezers.
- Ribbon cables come in various designs. They often consist of a large number of wires, each made of a plastic-coated wire, with the individual wires arranged parallel to one another in one plane and connected to one another in a materially bonded manner. However, there are also other designs, such as foil cables or so-called flexible printed circuit boards. All of these and other designs are to be understood here under the term ribbon cable. Ribbon cables are assembled with special connectors for electrical contact. These are typically cuboid-like plastic blocks that are connected across the cable at one end. extend across its entire width. Cable ends stiffened with resin, for example, are also known and function as connectors.
- these connectors provide a connection option for the ribbon cable on the input side. It is often clamped between two sub-blocks that have contact points for the individual conductor tracks of the ribbon cable.
- connector pins or sockets are usually provided that define a pushing direction aligned perpendicular to the transverse direction of the block or ribbon cable, in which the connector can be pushed together with a correspondingly shaped mating connector to form the electrical contact.
- DE 20 2012 101 070 U1 discloses a punching pliers for ribbon cables, which, after removal of the detachably fixed punching blade, is basically suitable as assembly pliers, but with the disadvantages described above.
- a clamp-like protective cover for ribbon cables is known from DE 100 05 315 A1. Clamping the ribbon cable in the area immediately behind the connector actually represents an extension of the rigid connector, which extends the contact surface for the installer's fingers.
- the known protective cover is not suitable as an assembly aid for inserting a ribbon cable with a connector into a mating connector fixed to a circuit board and requiring the ribbon cable to be guided largely parallel to the circuit board surface, which is why its possible use as an assembly aid is not mentioned at all in the aforementioned publication.
- each clamping cheek has at least three clamping cheek sections, namely a terminal front section, a terminal handle section and a connecting section arranged between the front section and the handle section, the corresponding, essentially flat clamping surface sections of which are angled to one another in order to form a stepped clamping surface profile and are aligned perpendicular to a common pivot axis plane assigned to the respective clamping cheek, in which the pivot axis lies.
- each clamping cheek has at least two clamping cheek sections, namely a terminal front section and a terminal handle section, the corresponding, essentially flat clamping surface sections of which are angled to one another wherein the clamping surface sections of the handle section each carry, on their side facing away from the adjacent clamping cheek section, at least one hinge leg of a hinge positioned off-center on one side, by means of which the clamping cheeks are hinged to one another.
- a ribbon cable can be gripped from the side, similar to flat tweezers.
- the longitudinal extension of the ribbon cable runs essentially transversely to the longitudinal extension of the tool (defined by the longitudinal extension of the clamping jaw from the articulation point to the free ends of the clamping cheeks) and essentially parallel to the pivot axis.
- the clamping surface of the tool according to the invention is divided into several clamping surface sections that are angled to one another and adjacent to one another in the longitudinal extension of the gripped ribbon cable.
- the clamped ribbon cable follows a stepped course in its longitudinal direction, namely the stepped course of the clamping surface.
- the use of the tool according to the invention temporarily stiffens the ribbon cable in a shape that is, on the one hand, optimally adapted to the force curve required for the insertion process near the connector and, on the other hand, offers sufficient space for the fitter's fingers to grip away from the connector.
- This shape allows the tool according to the invention to be gripped in the clamping area of the cable itself and, unlike flat tweezers or flat pliers, does not have to be attached to separate handle elements that are laterally spaced from the cable.
- Clamping surface sections i.e. cases in which more than two connecting sections aligned at an angle to each other extend between the front and handle sections, are suitable when particularly complicated spatial conditions exist.
- the longitudinal extensions of the ribbon cable and the tool are aligned in the same direction.
- the pivot axis runs transversely to the longitudinal direction of the ribbon cable and lies in particular in the cable plane itself.
- each clamping cheek is formed from a plate material.
- each clamping cheek can be designed as a bent sheet metal part or made of plastic, for example as an injection-molded part. This minimizes the thickness expansion of the tool according to the invention and essentially adjusts it to the expansion of the ribbon cable to be assembled.
- the person skilled in the art will recognize that the only thing that matters when choosing the material and dimensioning the clamping cheeks is that the resulting tool is sufficiently rigid in the closed state to be able to transmit the thrust required to insert the plug into a mating plug without significant deformation of its own.
- handling aids according to the invention as a set is particularly economically advantageous, since the tools can be produced very easily and inexpensively either as a disposable item together with a ribbon cable, the dimensions of which they or can be used as devices optimized for different cables and adapted to different spatial conditions.

- clamping cheeks 11, 12 With reference to Figure 2, one of the clamping cheeks 11, 12 is referred to here as the lower clamping cheek 11 and the other as the upper clamping cheek 12, without this being understood to be limiting in any way.
- a ribbon cable 20 is placed in the unfolded or opened state of the handling aid 10 on the clamping surface of its lower clamping cheek 11.
- the ribbon cable 20 comprises the actual cable 21 and a plug 22, which is arranged at one end of the actual cable 21.
- the plug 22 is designed as a plastic block into which the actual cable 21 opens.
- purely local stiffening of the wire ends is also conceivable, e.g. by means of a hardened resin.
- Inside the Contact elements are provided on the connector 22, which contact the individual conductor tracks of the cable 21 and form an interface for corresponding contact elements of a mating connector 30 (see Figures 2 and 3). Details of these contact elements are not shown in the figures because they are not relevant to the present invention.
- the ribbon cable 20 is preferably placed on the clamping surface of the lower clamping cheek 11 such that its plug 22 rests on the front edge of the front section 111 of this clamping surface. This ensures correct alignment of the ribbon cable 20 relative to the assembly aid 10.
- the handling aid 10 is then closed according to the pivoting arrow 40 by folding the upper clamping cheek 12 around the hinge 13.
- the ribbon cable 20 is clamped between the clamping cheeks 11, 12 and thereby assumes the step course specified by these.
- the ribbon cable is temporarily stiffened in the area of the handling aid 10 in this state.
- the handling aid 10 in particular the area in which the grip sections 113/123 of the clamping surface are located, can serve as an easily accessible point of attack for the fingers of a fitter (not shown in the figures).
- the fitter can exert a pressure in the closing direction on the clamping cheeks 11, 12 and secure the ribbon cable 20 in its temporarily stiffened position.
- it can exert a pushing force in the longitudinal direction of the ribbon cable 10, by means of which the plug 22 can be pushed into the mating plug 30, which is fixed, for example, on a circuit board, as is indicated in Figures 2 and 3 by the pushing arrow 50. Due to the handling aid 10 according to the invention, kinking of the ribbon cable is reliably prevented when this pushing force is applied.
- Figure 3 shows the same situation as Figure 2, but from above.
- FIG 4 shows a highly schematic representation of a handling aid 10 according to the invention in accordance with the second variant of the invention in the fully unfolded open state.
- the same handling aid 10 is also shown in Figures 5 and 6, in each case in a side view, namely in Figure 5 in an incompletely unfolded open state and in Figure 6 in the closed state, i.e. in the locked state.
- the handling aid 10 essentially consists of two clamping cheeks 11, 12 and a hinge 13 connecting them.
- one of the clamping cheeks 11, 12 is to be referred to as the lower clamping cheek 11 and the other as the upper clamping cheek 12, without this being understood to be restrictive in any way.
- clamping surfaces The surfaces of the clamping cheeks 11, 12 facing each other in the closed state are also referred to here as clamping surfaces. According to the invention, they are divided into several (in the embodiment shown, exactly three) clamping surface sections, namely a front section 111 or 121, a connecting section 112 or 122 and a handle section 113 or 123. As can be seen in Figures 5 and 6, the clamping surface sections 111/121, 112/122, 113/123 are arranged at an angle to each other. In the embodiment shown, the front sections 111/121 in particular are oriented essentially parallel to the handle section 113/123, with the connecting section 112/122 connecting them representing an inclined step.
- the hinge 13 is made up of two partial hinges 131, 132, which are arranged between the rear edges of the handle sections 113/123 facing each other. In particular, they are positioned at the edge of the two ends of the handle section rear edge, so that a gap is formed between them through which a ribbon cable 20 can be threaded and thus inserted between the clamping surfaces of the clamping cheeks 11, 12.
- the (functional) hinge 13 allows the clamping cheeks 11, 12 to pivot relative to each other, as indicated by the pivot arrow 40 and the pivot axis 41 in Figure 1.
- the ribbon cable 20 comprises the actual cable 21 and a plug 22, which is arranged at one end of the actual cable 21.
- the plug 22 is designed as a plastic block into which the actual cable 21 leads.
- the ribbon cable 20 is preferably placed in the handling aid 10 such that its connector 22 rests on the front edge of the front section 111 of this clamping surface. This ensures correct alignment of the ribbon cable 20 relative to the mounting aid 10.
- the handling aid 10 is then closed according to the pivoting arrow 40 by folding the upper clamping cheek 12 around the hinge 13.
- the ribbon cable 20 is clamped in this way, as can be seen in particular in Figure 5, between the clamping cheeks 11, 12 and, as shown in Figure 6, takes on the step course specified by these. In this state, the ribbon cable is temporarily stiffened in the area of the handling aid 10.
- it can exert a pushing force in the longitudinal direction of the ribbon cable 10 in a very simple manner and with precise coordination, by means of which the plug 22 can be pushed into the mating plug 30 fixed, for example, on a circuit board, as is indicated in Figure 6 by the pushing arrow 50. Due to the handling aid 10 according to the invention, kinking of the ribbon cable 20 is reliably prevented when this pushing force is applied.
- the fitter releases the pressure acting on the handle area 113/123 so that the upper clamping cheek 12 is separated from the lower clamping cheek 11 by the hinge 13. pivoted away and the handling aid 10 can thus be opened.
- the handling aid can then be pulled backwards away from the ribbon cable 20, which of course only works in cases in which the rear end of the ribbon cable is free. In cases in which this is not the case, the handling aid 10 cannot be used in the embodiment shown.
- a modification can be used in which the hinge 13 only comprises or consists of one of the partial hinges 131, 132. Instead of the other partial hinge 132, 131, this modification only has an extension of the gap intended for threading. This means that the ribbon cable 20 can also be inserted from the side and the handling aid can also be pulled off the cable from the side.
- the embodiments discussed in the specific description and shown in the figures represent only illustrative embodiments of the present invention.
- the person skilled in the art has a wide range of possible variations at his disposal.
- the person skilled in the art is largely free to choose the materials.
- the clamping cheeks 11, 12 can be made as bent sheet metal parts that are connected to one another by means of an adhesive strip that acts as a film hinge.
- a one-piece embodiment made of injection-molded plastic is also conceivable.
- more complex variants using more complex hinges 13 are also possible.
