Definitions
- the invention relates to an aluminum foil, its further processing into a battery foil and the use of the aluminum foil for the production of a battery foil.
- Batteries such as lithium-ion batteries are used in particular as a storage medium for electrical energy in electromobility.
- the performance of such batteries depends on the speed and efficiency of the charging and mass transport processes when discharging and charging the batteries.
- the transport processes are determined, among other things, by the structure of the electrodes in the battery.
- Electrodes and in particular the cathodes often comprise a substrate made of a metal foil which additionally has an electrode coating or a cathode composition on the surface.
- the chemical-physical processes at the interface between the substrate and the electrode coating have turned out to be decisive for the performance of the battery.
- the surface properties of the substrate must therefore be adapted with regard to optimum adhesion of the electrode coating and the most secure contact possible.
- Aluminum foils for use in battery electrodes, which serve as the substrate in electrodes, are typically manufactured via a rolling process.
- Aluminum foils are usually provided with a cooling lubricant during the rolling process to reduce friction in the nip, to cool aluminum and the rolls, to reduce roll wear and to prevent the rolled product from sticking during rolling.
- the aluminum foil is coated with an electrode material that is oily from the rolling, work-hardened, the residual coating of the surface with the cooling lubricant and other residues from the rolling process such as particles, abrasion and reaction products can lead to wetting problems and adhesion problems of the electrode coating on the aluminum foil.
- the cooling lubricant distribution on the surface of the aluminum foil after rolling can be very uneven, so that sections with locally excessive cooling lubricant coverage are formed in which optimal coating and contacting is not possible.
- the mass of cooling lubricant should be reduced or removed before coating with the electrode coating.
- the aluminum foil can be annealed at low temperatures in order to evaporate or oxidize the remaining cooling lubricant, the aluminum foil being softened.
- residues of the cooling lubricant will remain on the aluminum foil, making further processing, such as coating, problematic.
- locally strongly varying wettability can also occur after annealing due to an uneven covering of cooling lubricant.
- the oxide layer can also grow on the surface as a result of the heating of the aluminum foil, with the oxide layer becoming thicker in particular in the edge regions.
- aluminum foils can be chemically degreased to condition the surface for coating.
- the cooling lubricant is removed in a pickling degreasing process and the rolling oxide layer is dissolved.
- a thicker, porous hydroxide layer forms on the surface of the aluminum foil.
- Flame degreasing of aluminum foil can be used as an alternative surface treatment to degrease and condition the surface.
- the high energy inputs required with flame degreasing can lead to undesirable softening of the aluminum foil and significant growth of the oxide layer, resulting in poorer contacting of the surface of the aluminum foil. Similar results are obtained with NIR and plasma treatment.
- a corona treatment of the surface of an aluminum strip or an aluminum foil is also suitable for degreasing and conditioning it.
- the surface tension is also increased by the corona treatment.
- the object of the invention is to provide an aluminum foil for battery electrodes which does not require cost-intensive conditioning of the surface and which has good wettability and adhesion for different types Has electrode coatings and at the same time enables effective electrical contact to the electrode coating.
- the surface produced should have good corrosion resistance to the electrolytes used in a battery cell.
- an aluminum foil made from an alloy of the type AAlxxx, AA3xxx and/or AA8xxx, which is in a work-hardened state and has a polyalkylene glycol or a compound containing a polyalkylene oxide structure on its surface.
- the subject matter of the invention is also a method for producing the aforementioned battery foil.
- the subject of the invention is the use of aluminum foil as battery foil.
- the aluminum foil according to the invention can consist of an alloy of the type AA Ixxx, AA 3xxx and/or AA 8xxx.
- Aluminum alloys of the type AA Ixxx cause only very few undesired chemical processes between the electrode coating and the surface of the aluminum foil due to the low proportion of alloying additives and therefore only show minor corrosion effects.
- alloys of the type AA 1050, AA 1100, AA 1200 or AA 1085 can be used here, which can have improved mechanical characteristics compared to pure aluminum. The mechanical properties can be further improved by using alloys of type AA 3xxx and AA 8xxx.
- the surface of an aluminum foil that has been produced during cold rolling using a cooling lubricant that is essentially free of fatty acids and fatty alcohols but has a polyalkylene glycol or a compound containing a polyalkylene oxide has a high surface energy and thus an optimum Surface for use as a substrate in an electrode of a battery.
- the surface of the aluminum foil is essentially free of a fatty acid and free of a fatty alcohol. These substances are usually contained in cooling lubricants and are therefore present on the surface of aluminum as components of the remaining cooling lubricant immediately after cold rolling.
- Essentially free of a fatty acid and free of a fatty alcohol means that less than 1 mg/m 2 of a fatty acid and/or a fatty alcohol is present on one surface side of the aluminum foil.
- the surface of the aluminum foil is adjusted only by the rolling process and does not undergo heat treatment, flame degreasing, chemical degreasing and/or corona treatment, especially after the completion of cold rolling.
- the aluminum foil has good initial adhesion for an electrode coating.
- the aluminum foil therefore advantageously has a work-hardened state, with which the aluminum foil according to the invention differs in the work-hardened structure from aluminum foils for battery electrodes which have been conditioned, for example, by heat treatment or flame degreasing.
- the aluminum foil according to the invention is obtained by cold rolling an aluminum strip in the presence of a cooling lubricant which contains a mineral oil-based or synthetic base oil and a polyalkylene glycol and/or a compound containing a polyalkylene oxide structure and is essentially free of fatty acids and fatty alcohols.
- the aluminum foil obtained is therefore free from visible defects caused by fatty acids and fatty alcohols and has a surprisingly high wettability for N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). This is an indicator of the coatability of the aluminum foil with an electrode coating. Furthermore, the aluminum foil of the present invention does not require a corona treatment when a high surface energy of the surface of the aluminum foil is desired.
- NMP N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone
- the cooling lubricant used according to the invention is oil-soluble. It is immiscible with water.
