Definitions
- the invention relates to a coating composition containing an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl acetate polymer and a dispersion of a styrene copolymer.
- Aqueous paper coating slips essentially contain synthetic binders, pigments, other auxiliaries and water.
- copolymers based on styrene and butadiene and based on styrene and acrylic acid ester have established themselves as binders for paper coating slips.
- the WO 2012/012231 teaches vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers with crosslinking monomers which, as binders in paper coating slip, lead to good strength and reduced picking when printed.
- the ethylene content of these polymers is 12 and more parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of monomer.
- the DE 10 2010 063 470 teaches, as a synthetic binder for paper coating slips, a combination of a styrene-butadiene copolymer or a styrene-acrylic acid ester copolymer each with a vinyl acetate-ethylene polymer stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol to improve the whiteness and line porosity of coated print media.
- the mixtures used here have a ratio of vinyl acetate/ethylene polymer to styrene copolymer of 25:75.
- the US2015/0125711 describes binder compositions for paper coating slips made from functionalized vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers and styrene/butadiene polymers and mixtures of vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers and styrene/acrylate polymers.
- Some vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers are functionalized with carboxyl and have an ethylene content of 14% by weight or more, based on the polymer. Papers coated with such coating slips have good strength and therefore reduced picking.
- the proportion by weight of the functionalized vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers in the total binder is 20 to 80%.
- Cardboard is usually multi-layered, i.e. it consists of several layers of paper of different thicknesses and sometimes made of different materials, which are pressed together (couched) without the use of glue.
- Coated cardboard is used as a packaging material for a wide range of products. During the manufacture of cardboard packaging, the fold lines are first defined in order to prevent the panel from tearing during folding. When folding, a layer breaking is often observed. This separation of the individual cardboard layers, often a breaking of a softer middle layer of cardboard, is also referred to as delamination and often occurs during the printing process.
- the viscous printing ink on the printing roller causes a tensile force in the z-direction of the paper surface, which also causes the cardboard layer to break, the so-called "delamination".
- the effect of this tensile force in the z-direction during the printing process is also known from coating paper, with the damage occurring directly on the surface when parts of the paper coating detach from the base paper, so-called picking. While picking affects pigments on the paper surface, multi-ply board damage occurs in the fiber layer and manifests itself in the formation of waves.
- the object of the present invention was to find a coating composition which reduces delamination when multilayer cardboard is printed. Furthermore, cardboard coated with it should also have good strength, i.e. the coating should not have any picking.
- the invention also relates to a method for producing the coating composition, its use for coating cardboard, a method for coating cardboard with the coating composition and the cardboard coated therewith.
- cardboard is to be understood as meaning a shaped body made of fibrous material which has a mass per unit area, also known colloquially as “area weight”, in the range from 150 to 600 g/m 2 , determined according to DIN EN ISO 536.
- the polymer dispersions to be used according to the invention are dispersions of polymers in an aqueous medium.
- This can be, for example, completely desalinated water or mixtures of water and a solvent that is miscible with it, such as methanol, ethanol or tetrahydrofuran. Preferably no organic solvents are used.
- the solids contents of the dispersions are preferably from 15 to 75% by weight, preferably from 40 to 60% by weight, in particular greater than 50% by weight.
- the solids content can be adjusted, for example, by appropriately adjusting the amount of water used in the emulsion polymerization and/or the amounts of monomer.
- the pH of the polymer dispersion is preferably adjusted to a pH greater than 3.5, in particular to a pH of between 4.5 and 9.
- the coating composition contains one or more vinyl acetate polymers (i), obtainable by free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization 77 to 99% by weight vinyl acetate, 1 to 13% by weight preferably 5 to 13% by weight of ethylene and 0 to 10% by weight at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is neither vinyl acetate nor ethylene, the amounts of the monomers adding up to 100% by weight.
- vinyl acetate polymers obtainable by free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization 77 to 99% by weight vinyl acetate, 1 to 13% by weight preferably 5 to 13% by weight of ethylene and 0 to 10% by weight at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is neither vinyl acetate nor ethylene, the amounts of the monomers adding up to 100% by weight.
- the aqueous vinyl acetate polymers used according to the invention have an ethylene content of from 1 to 13% by weight, based on the polymer. If other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are used in addition to vinyl acetate and ethylene, the polymer advantageously has a vinyl acetate content of ⁇ 85% by weight.
- suitable monomer combinations are e.g. B. vinyl acetate / vinyl pivalate / ethylene, vinyl acetate / vinyl 2-ethylhexanoate / ethylene, vinyl acetate / methyl methacrylate / ethylene and vinyl acetate / vinyl chloride / ethylene, from the group of the so-called terpolymers.
- Aqueous dispersions based on vinyl acetate and ethylene are well known and, for example, in DE 102010063470 described to the disclosure of which reference is expressly made.
- the glass transition temperature of the vinyl acetate polymers is advantageously in the range from 15 to 25.degree. C., in particular in the range from 15 to 20.degree.
- Tg n are the glass transition temperatures of only one of the monomers 1, 2, .... n mean homopolymers built up in degrees Kelvin.
- the glass transition temperatures of these homopolymers of most ethylenically unsaturated monomers are known (or can be determined experimentally in a simple manner known per se) and, for example, in J. Brandrup, EH Immergut, Polymer Handbook 1st Ed. J Wiley, New York, 1966 , 2nd ed. J Wiley, New York, 1975 and 3rd ed. J Wiley, New York, 1989 , as in Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, page 169, Verlag Chemie, Weinheim, 1992 , listed.
- a vinyl acetate polymer which can be obtained by free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization 82 to 98% by weight vinyl acetate, 1 to 13% by weight ethylene and 1 to 5% by weight one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers selected from vinyl esters of ⁇ -branched monocarboxylic acids having 9 to 11 carbon atoms, vinyl laurate, (meth)acrylic acid esters of unbranched or branched alcohols having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, which still have 1 to 40% by weight % contain ethylene, the amounts of the monomers adding up to 100% by weight.
- the vinyl acetate polymers are obtainable by free-radically initiated emulsion polymerization of a monomer composition consisting of 87 to 95% by weight of vinyl acetate and 5 to 13% by weight of ethylene, the amounts of the monomers adding up to 100% by weight.
- the polymers are prepared in a known manner, for example by emulsion polymerization processes in the presence of emulsifiers or preferably of protective colloids, preferably by the emulsion polymerization process as described below for polymers (ii).
- the polymerization temperature for the polymers (i) is generally from 20.degree. C. to 100.degree. C., preferably from 60.degree. C. to 90.degree.
- the copolymerization of gaseous comonomers, such as ethylene, is preferably carried out under pressure, generally between 5 bar and 100 bar.
- the aqueous dispersions of the polymers (i) obtainable in this way have a solids content of preferably from 30 to 75% by weight, particularly preferably from 50 to 60% by weight.
- the styrene copolymers used according to the invention are also used in the form of an aqueous dispersion. They can be obtained by free-radical emulsion polymerization of a monomer composition containing 35 to 70% by weight of styrene, preferably 40 to 65% by weight, preferably 40 to 59% by weight of styrene, and 20 to 60% by weight, preferably 30 to 59 wt % by weight of styrene, and 20 to 60% by weight, preferably 25 to 50% by weight, of a conjugated aliphatic diene, in each case based on 100% by weight of total monomer.
- Styrene in combination with the esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid are the main monomers of the so-called "styrene acrylates".
- Styrene in combination with a conjugated aliphatic diene are the main monomers of the styrene/diene copolymers or, in the case of butadiene, the styrene/butadiene copolymers.
- the coating composition according to the invention contains dispersions of styrene acrylate copolymers or styrene/diene copolymers or mixtures thereof.

- solids content The solids content of a coating or a dispersion was determined by distributing 0.5 to 1.5 g of the coating/dispersion in a metal lid with a diameter of 4 cm and then drying it in a circulating air drying cabinet at 140° C. for 30 minutes. The ratio of the mass of the sample after drying under the above conditions to the mass at sampling gives the solids content.
- the preparation of the spread was carried out in a stirring unit, into which the individual components were fed one after the other.

- the coating composition was applied to one side of the raw cardboard using a laboratory coating machine and dried to a residual moisture content of 4.5% by weight using an IR radiator. The job was done using the blade coating method. A layer was applied. The coat weight was 10 g/m 2 (solid).
- Determination of delamination Principle To determine the delamination behavior of a coating compound, a coated cardboard sample is printed with a picking oil test ink using an IGT printability tester AIC 2-5. The surface is more or less severely damaged (wave formation) by the tensile force of the picking oil test paint. The less damage there is, the less delamination the coating shows.
- Preparation From the coated board samples to be tested, 5 strips are cut in the running direction of the board web in the format 340 mm x 40 mm. The polyurethane rollers are inserted into the roller mill.
- IGT dry Measurement of dry pick resistance with IGT test printer (IGT dry): Strips were cut from the coated board to be tested and printed using the IGT test printer. The printing inks used are specific test inks from Lorilleux, which transmit different tensile forces. The test strips are fed through the press at a continuously increasing speed (maximum speed 200 cm/s). To evaluate the result, the point on the sample print strip is determined at which 10 pick points occurred on the paper surface after the start of printing. The measure given for dry pick resistance is the speed in cm/s that is present during the print at that point in time and the test ink used. The higher this print speed at the tenth picking point, the better the quality assessment of the paper surface.

- the solids content of the coating slip was 65% by weight and the pH was 8.8.
- binder compositions formulated with vinyl acetate/ethylene polymers with a T g in the range from 10 to 25 °C as a coating and applied to cardboard lead to better delamination values of the cardboard than a pure styrene acrylate as a binder in the coating.
- Coating slips were produced with the binder dispersions listed above, consisting of 100 parts by weight pigment (80 parts by weight calcium carbonate and 20 parts by weight kaolin) 0.9 parts by weight Polyvinyl alcohol BF-05 0.12 parts by weight Rheology aid (Sterocoll FS (FG: 40%)) 15.5 parts by weight binder polymer
- the solids content of the coating slip was 65% by weight and the pH was 9. The addition took place according to this tabular sequence.
- This coating composition was applied to single-coated raw cardboard (primed weight was 10 g/m 2 solid) using a Bent-Blade pilot plant (manufactured by Voith). The coat weight was 10 g/m 2 (solid). All weights are based on the respective solids content of the components.

- Table 4 shows the ratio of the two binder polymers (solid styrene/butadiene polymer/solid vinyl acetate/ethylene polymer).

Abstract
