  • the spacing between the two rows 36, 38, together with the stitches 34 in one row being staggered relative to the stitches 34 in the other row, provide greater rigidity and also avoids stitches in the area of the slots 40 that receive the connectors for cross tees associated with the main runner in the assembled suspension grid, thus avoiding potential interference between the stitches 34 and the connectors of the cross tees.
  • a lower cap 42 is applied to the flanges so that the free edges 16a of the flanges 16 are bent back on themselves along with the edges 42a of the cap 42 to provide a hemmed flange.
  • the cap 42 also provides for increased section properties for the main runner 10 due to the additional mass provided by the cap 42.
  • the bulb 12 of the runner 10 is modified to provide for a greater beam height than a standard runner configuration. More specifically, the vertical dimension of the bulb 12 is increased and the upper corners 44 of the bulb 12 are rounded. The rounded corners 44 help to avoid interference between the bulb 12 and light fixture housings that are supported in the assembled grid system.
  • the bulb 12 has a height of 1.308 cm (0.515") and a width of 0.635 cm (0.250"), with the corners of the bulb having a radius of 0.236 cm (0.093"), while the runner has an overall height of 4.166 cm (1.640").
  • the enhanced strength provided to a main runner having the combination of features described above permit the runner to be formed of thinner material than the prior art runner without compromising the beam strength of the runner.
  • the thickness of the sheet material from which the main runner is roll formed may be reduced on the order of 20% (e.g., from 0.038 cm to 0.030 cm (0.015" to 0.012")).

Claims (16)

  1. Longeron principal (10) pour un système de grille de plafond suspendu comprenant :
    a) une âme centrale (14) composée de deux couches de tôles dotées de premier et deuxième bouts ;
    b) un bourrelet de renforcement (12) s'étendant d'une partie supérieure de l'âme centrale (14) entre les premier et deuxième bouts de l'âme centrale (14) ;
    c) des brides opposées (16) s'étendant d'une partie terminale de l'âme centrale (14) entre les premier et deuxième bouts de l'âme centrale (14) ;
    d) un premier et un deuxième raccords d'extrémité (18) incorporés dans l'âme centrale (14), et s'étendant des premier et deuxième bouts de l'âme centrale (14), respectivement, au-delà des brides (16), le premier raccord d'extrémité (18) étant déplacé hors d'un plan défini par l'âme centrale (14) dans une première direction (X), et le deuxième raccord d'extrémité (18) étant déplacé hors du plan défini par l'âme centrale (14) dans une deuxième direction opposée à la première direction (X), chacun des premier et deuxième raccords d'extrémité (18) possédant un bord distal (20) ;
    e) un étrier (22) adjacent à chaque bout de l'âme centrale (14) déformé relativement au plan de l'âme centrale dans une direction (Y) située face au raccord d'extrémité (18) adjacent, l'étrier (22) étant configuré pour recevoir une partie terminale (24) d'un raccord d'extrémité (18) d'une deuxième pièce en T
    f) chacun des premier et deuxième raccords d'extrémité (18) comprenant en outre un bossage de forme rectangulaire (26) s'étendant depuis un premier côté du raccord d'extrémité (18), le bossage étant défini par un bord proximal, un bord distal, un bord supérieur et un bord inférieur,
    caractérisé en ce que chacun des premier et deuxième raccords d'extrémité comprend en outre des première et deuxième languettes de verrouillage (28) espacées, chacune desquelles possédant une surface de coincement conique proximale (30) et une surface de verrouillage distale (32) s'étendant depuis un deuxième côté du raccord d'extrémité (18), de sorte que la surface de verrouillage distale (32) des languettes de verrouillage engage le bord distal (20) du raccord d'extrémité (18) de la deuxième pièce en T.
  2. Longeron principal (10) selon la revendication 1, comprenant en outre une première rangée (36) de piqûres espacées longitudinalement (34) à l'extrémité supérieure de la nappe (14) adjacente au bourrelet (12), et une deuxième rangée (38) de piqûres espacées longitudinalement (34) à l'extrémité inférieure de la nappe (14) adjacente aux brides (16), les piqûres (34) de la première rangée (36) étant décalées par rapport aux piqûres (34) de la deuxième rangée.
  3. Longeron principal (10) selon la revendication 1, comprenant en outre un chapeau inférieur (42) appliqué sur les brides (16) de sorte que les bords libres (16a) des brides (16) puissent être repliés sur eux-mêmes le long des bords (42a) du chapeau (42), en formant une bride ourlée.
