Definitions
- the invention relates to a filter material and a segment of a smoking article made from it, in particular a segment for filtration of the aerosol flowing in the smoking article, which is readily biodegradable, contains fewer additives and processing aids, is optically more homogeneous than segments known from the prior art and is inexpensively manufactured can be.
- Smoking articles are typically rod-shaped articles consisting of at least two rod-shaped segments arranged one after the other.
- One segment contains a material that is capable of forming an aerosol when heated and at least one other segment that serves to influence properties of the aerosol.
- the smoking article can be a filter cigarette in which a first segment contains the aerosol-forming material, in particular tobacco, and a further segment is designed as a filter and is used to filter the aerosol.
- the aerosol is generated by burning the aerosol-forming material, and the filter primarily serves to filter the aerosol and to provide the filter cigarette with a defined draw resistance.
- the smoking article can also be a so-called tobacco heater, in which the aerosol-forming material is only heated but not burned. This reduces the number and amount of harmful substances in the aerosol.
- Such a smoking article also consists of at least two, but more often more, in particular four segments.
- One segment contains the aerosol forming material, which typically comprises tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, or tobacco processed by other processes.
- Other segments in the smoking article are used to direct the aerosol, cool the aerosol or filter the aerosol.
- the segments are mostly encased by an encasing material. Paper is very often used as a wrapping material.
- segment is understood to mean the segment of a smoking article, which does not contain the aerosol-forming material, but is used, for example, to forward, cool or filter the aerosol.
- segments for smoking articles in particular filter segments, from paper.
- segments of this type are generally readily biodegradable, they also have disadvantages.
- filter segments made of paper generally have a high filtration efficiency and therefore result in a dry aerosol, which affects the taste of the aerosol compared to cigarettes with the usual cellulose acetate filter segments.
- the object of the invention is to provide a filter material for a smoking article that is readily biodegradable and from which segments for smoking articles can be made whose appearance is comparable to that of conventional segments, in particular those made of cellulose acetate, and that in addition can be made from readily available, inexpensive raw materials. Undesirable influences on the taste of the smoking article should be minimized.
- the object can be achieved by a filter material comprising a nonwoven fabric, wherein the nonwoven fabric is hydroentangled and the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric contains at least 50% and at most 90% wood pulp fibers, at least 10% and at most 50% fibers from regenerated cellulose and less than 30% contains natural polymers, and the amount of wood pulp fibers and fibers of regenerated cellulose together represents at least 70% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric and the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric has a density of at least 100 kg/m 3 and at most 300 kg/m 3 and a caliper of at least 100 ⁇ m and at most 1000 ⁇ m. All percentages relate to the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- hydroentangled initially refers to the underlying manufacturing process
- a hydroentangled nonwoven has characteristic structural properties that distinguish it from other fibrous materials or nonwovens and, to the inventors' knowledge, are not achieved in an identical manner by a different manufacturing process can become.
- the strength of the hydroentangled nonwoven is achieved by the turbulence of the fibers and this means that the fibers are to a significant extent also aligned in the thickness direction of the non-woven fabric.
- a filter material with a high proportion of wood pulp fibers can be produced without the structure of the non-woven fabric becoming too dense or too compact. According to the invention, this is essentially achieved through the use of a hydroentangled nonwoven fabric which, in addition to the wood pulp fibers, also contains fibers made from regenerated cellulose.
- the fibers are placed on a water-permeable screen and entangled by turbulence with a water jet directed onto the fibers.
- a filter material suitable for segments of smoking articles can be produced with a high proportion of wood pulp fibers and therefore inexpensively, and a segment for a smoking article made from the filter material according to the invention shows a homogeneous cut surface that is well comparable to that of a segment made of cellulose acetate.
- the addition of additives or processing aids is not necessary for the production of the hydroentangled nonwoven. An undesirable influence of such additives or processing aids on the taste of the smoking article manufactured with the aid of the filter material according to the invention is thus avoided and the biodegradability is not impaired.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric contained in the filter material according to the invention contains a high proportion of wood pulp fibers and fibers of regenerated cellulose, which together make up at least 70% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- wood pulp fibers and also regenerated cellulose consist of natural polymers, they are also readily biodegradable.
- the proportion of non-natural polymers should be less than 30% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- Natural polymers are polymers that have been obtained directly from natural raw materials without any chemical change or without changing the composition, or are chemically identical to such polymers obtained from nature.
- wood pulp fibers consist of natural polymers and also fibers of regenerated cellulose belong to the natural polymers.
- chemical changes have taken place so that they belong to the non-natural polymers, and although the starting materials occur in nature, these starting materials have at least been modified in such a way that rapid biodegradability is no longer guaranteed.
- all polymers derived from mineral oils such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester or polystyrene are not natural polymers.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric contained in the filter material of the present invention contains wood pulp fibers in an amount of at least 50% and at most 90% by mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric.
- the proportion of wood pulp fibers is preferably at least 60% and at most 80% and particularly preferably at least 60% and at most 70%, in each case based on the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- Wood pulp fibers are cellulose fibers obtained from coniferous or deciduous trees. They are industrially produced in large quantities, have stable quality and are inexpensive.
- the wood pulp fibers are preferably obtained from softwoods, for example from spruce, pine or fir, because these fibers are at a good length because of their length Lead strength of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- Wood pulp fibers from hardwoods which are preferably suitable for the invention are obtained from birch, beech or eucalyptus. Mixtures of wood pulp fibers from different origins can also preferably be used. Wood pulp fibers obtained from softwoods, which are referred to as reinforced pulp fibers and achieve particularly high strength, and mercerized wood pulp fibers which achieve a particularly high thickness and low density are particularly preferred.
- cellulose fibers from other plants such as hemp, flax, jute, ramie, abaca, sisal, cotton or esparto grass do not count as wood cellulose fibers.
- a porous paper structure and high strength can also be achieved with these fibers.
- the fibers are expensive, sometimes not readily available industrially and of variable quality due to the short growth period of these plants. They can be contained in the hydroentangled nonwoven according to the invention, but their proportion should preferably be at most 20% and particularly preferably at most 10% and very particularly preferably at most 1% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- the wood pulp fibers can be bleached or unbleached.
- Bleached wood pulp fibers offer advantages in the appearance of a segment made from the filter material of the invention because of their white color, while unbleached wood pulp fibers, which then have a light brown to dark brown color, are more environmentally friendly because the bleaching process can be omitted.
- Mixtures of bleached and unbleached wood pulp fibers can also be used to better adjust the color of the filter material of the invention.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric contained in the filter material of the present invention contains regenerated cellulose fibers in an amount of at least 10% and at most 50% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric.
- the proportion of fibers made from regenerated cellulose is preferably at least 20% and at most 45% and particularly preferably at least 30% and at most 40%, in each case based on the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- the fibers made from regenerated cellulose are preferably viscose fibers, modal fibers, Lyocell® , Tencel® or mixtures thereof. These fibers have good biodegradability and can be used to optimize the strength, thickness or density of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric and adjust the filtration efficiency of the resulting smoking article segment.
- the filter material according to the invention comprises a hydroentangled nonwoven fabric which consists essentially exclusively, but at least to at least 95% of the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric of wood pulp fibers and fibers of regenerated cellulose. This very particularly preferred embodiment allows the best biodegradability while at the same time having a very low influence on the taste of the smoking article made with the help of the filter material.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven should contain less than 30% non-natural polymers.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven contains less than 10% non-natural polymers and more preferably less than 1% non-natural polymers. The percentages relate to the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven of the filter material contains at least 5% and less than 30%, more preferably less than 25% and very particularly preferably less than 20% staple fibers made of cellulose acetate, the percentages based on the mass of the hydroentangled nonwoven relate.
- Additives such as alkyl ketene dimers (AKD), alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA), fatty acids, starch, starch derivatives, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginates, or pH-adjusting substances such as organic or inorganic acids or alkalis can be added to adjust specific properties of the nonwoven fabric, as long as the mass of non-natural polymers in the non-woven fabric is not more than 30%.
- the person skilled in the art is able to determine the type and amount of such additives from his experience.
- the basis weight of the hydroentangled nonwoven is preferably at least 25 g/m 2 and at most 150 g/m 2 , particularly preferably at least 35 g/m 2 and at most 120 g/m 2 and very particularly preferably at least 40 g/m 2 and at most 80 g / m2 .
- the basis weight affects the tensile strength of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric, with a higher basis weight leading to higher strength.
- the information relates to a basis weight measured according to ISO 536:2012.
- the thickness of the hydroentangled nonwoven is at least 100 ⁇ m and at most 1000 ⁇ m, preferably at least 120 ⁇ m and at most 800 ⁇ m and particularly preferably at least 150 ⁇ m and at most 750 ⁇ m. Thickness affects the amount of filter material that can be packed into the segment of the smoking article and hence the segment's draw resistance and filtration efficiency, but also the processability of the filter material since it is often crimped or pleated to produce a segment for a smoking article. Too great a thickness is unfavorable for such process steps, and thicknesses in the preferred and particularly preferred intervals allow the filter material according to the invention to be processed particularly well into a segment of a smoking article.
- the density of the hydroentangled nonwoven is obtained by dividing the basis weight according to ISO 536:2012 by the thickness according to ISO 534:2011.
- the density of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric determined in this way is at least 100 kg/m 3 and at most 300 kg/m 3 , preferably at least 120 kg/m 3 and at most 250 kg/m 3 and particularly preferably at least 140 kg/m 3 and at most 220 kg/m 3 m3 .
- These values relate to the density before a segment of a smoking article is manufactured from the filter material according to the invention comprising this hydroentangled nonwoven fabric.
- the density of the hydroentangled nonwoven should be within a comparatively narrow interval because it determines the draw resistance and the filtration efficiency of the segment of a smoking article made from it. The preferred and most preferred intervals allow for an even more favorable combination of draw resistance and filtration efficiency.
- the air permeability of the hydroentangled nonwoven can preferably be between 10000 cm 3 /(cm 2 kPa min) and 60000 cm 3 /(cm 2 kPa min), particularly preferably between 20000 cm 3 /( cm 2 kPa min) and 50000 cm 3 /(cm 2 kPa min) and most preferably between 35000 cm 3 /(cm 2 kPa min) and 45000 cm 3 /(cm 2 kPa min) lie.
- the air permeability describes the porous structure of the hydroentangled nonwoven and thus also influences the filtration efficiency and the draw resistance.
- the mechanical properties of the hydroentangled nonwoven are important for the processing of the filter material according to the invention into a segment for a smoking article.
- the width-related tensile strength of the hydroentangled nonwoven measured according to ISO 1924-2:2008, is preferably at least 0.05 kN/m and at most 5 kN/m, particularly preferably at least 0.07 kN/m and at most 4 kN/m.
- the elongation at break of the hydroentangled nonwoven is important because when the filter material according to the invention is processed into a segment of a smoking article, the filter material is often crimped and a particularly high elongation at break is favorable for this.
- the elongation at break of the hydroentangled nonwoven measured according to ISO 1924-2:2008, is therefore preferably at least 1% and at most 50% and particularly preferably at least 3% and at most 40%.
- the energy absorption capacity of the hydroentangled nonwoven is preferably at least 4 J/m 2 and at most 500 J/m 2 and particularly preferably at least 5 J/m 2 and at most 450 J/m 2 .
- Tensile strength, elongation at break, and energy absorbing capacity can depend on the direction in which the sample for measurement was taken from the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric.
- the stated characteristics of the hydroentangled nonwoven are met if the tensile strength, elongation at break or energy absorption capacity in at least one direction are within the stated preferred or particularly preferred ranges.
- the filter material according to the invention comprises the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven makes up the majority of the filter material, so that preferably at least 90% of the mass of the filter material is formed by the hydroentangled nonwoven and particularly preferably at least 95% of the mass of the filter material is formed by the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- the filter material according to the invention can also comprise other components which, for example, influence the processability of the filter material or the properties of a segment made from it or the taste of the smoking article.
- these include, for example, carriers of flavorings, in particular threads impregnated with flavorings or substances to increase the rigidity of the filter material or materials that increase the hardness of the filter made from the filter material, such as thermoplastic materials.
- the filter material comprises the hydroentangled nonwoven and a substance selected from the group consisting of triacetin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, glycerol, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol and tri-ethyl citrate or mixtures thereof. These substances can help to better match the filtration efficiency to that of cellulose acetate.
- the fulfillment of the above-mentioned characteristics of the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric for example with regard to the content of wood pulp fibers, the content of fibers from regenerated cellulose, the amount of wood pulp fibers and fibers from regenerated cellulose, the proportion of non-natural polymers, the content of other cellulose fibres, the density, the thickness, the basis weight, the air permeability, the tensile strength, the elongation at break and the energy absorption capacity, can also be tested on the filter material itself, without the hydroentangled nonwoven being isolated from the filter material would have to be.
- the above-mentioned preferred, particularly preferred and very particularly preferred intervals and properties according to the invention then also apply to the filter material made from the hydroentangled nonwoven.
- Segments according to the invention for smoking articles can be produced from the filter material according to the invention by methods known from the prior art. These methods include, for example, crimping or pleating the filter material, forming a continuous strand from the crimped or pleated filter material, wrapping the continuous strand with a wrapping material, and cutting the wrapped strand into individual rods of a defined length. In many cases the length of such a rod is an integer multiple of the length of the segment then to be used in the smoking article of the invention and therefore the rods are then cut into segments of the desired length before or during manufacture of the smoking article.
- the segment for smoking articles according to the invention comprises the filter material according to the invention and a wrapping material.
- the segment is cylindrical with a diameter of at least 3 mm and at most 10 mm, particularly preferably at least 4 mm and at most 9 mm and very particularly preferably at least 5 mm and at most 8 mm. These diameters are favorable for using the segments according to the invention in smoking articles.
- the segment has a length of at least 4 mm and at most 40 mm, particularly preferably at least 6 mm and at most 35 mm and very particularly preferably at least 10 mm and at most 28 mm.
- the draw resistance of the segment determines, among other things, what pressure difference the smoker has to apply when consuming the smoking article in order to generate a specific volume flow through the smoking article, and it therefore significantly influences the smoker's acceptance of the smoking article.
- the draw resistance of the segment can be measured according to ISO 6565:2015 and is given in mm water column (mmWG).
- mmWG mm water column
- the tensile resistance of the segment is proportional to the length of the segment, so that the tensile resistance can also be measured on rods that differ from the segment only in length. From this, the drag resistance of the segment can be easily calculated.
- the tensile resistance of the segment per length of the segment is preferably at least 1 mmWG/mm and at most 12 mmWG/mm and particularly preferably at least 2 mmWG/mm and at most 10 mmWG/mm.
- the density of the segment itself, without the covering material is preferably between 50 kg/m 3 and 300 kg/m 3 , particularly preferably between 60 kg/m 3 and 250 kg/m 3 and very particularly preferably between 70 kg/m 3 and 230kg /m3. Density has a significant impact on draw resistance, filtration efficiency and segment hardness.
- the density of the segment is given without the wrapping material, as the wrapping material has little effect on draw resistance or filtration efficiency.
- the density of the segment can be determined by calculation. First of all, the volume of the segment is determined, which can be calculated from the diameter and the length, for example, in the case of a cylindrical segment. The influence of the cladding material on the diameter can be neglected.
- the mass of the segment can be determined by weighing with the segment wrapped in the wrapping material.
- the mass of the wrapping material can be determined from the area of the wrapping material and the nominal or measured basis weight of the wrapping material. For example, for a typical cylindrical segment, the area of the wrapping material is given by the perimeter of the segment and the overlap of the wrapping material on itself and the length of the segment.
- the mass of the covering material is subtracted from the mass of the segment with covering material and its density is calculated by dividing it by the volume of the segment.
- a numerical example is detailed below.
- the covering material of the segment according to the invention is preferably paper or foil. So that the good biodegradability of the segment is not impaired,
- the paper or film contains less than 10% non-natural polymers, based on the mass of the wrapping material.
- the covering material of the segment according to the invention preferably has a basis weight of at least 20 g/m 2 and at most 150 g/m 2 , particularly preferably at least 30 g/m 2 and at most 130 g/m 2 .
- a covering material with this preferred or particularly preferred weight per unit area gives the segment according to the invention covered therewith a particularly advantageous hardness. This means that the smoker cannot inadvertently squeeze the segment located in the smoking article.
- the segment according to the invention additionally contains at least one capsule containing flavorings.
- the capsule is often designed in such a way that the smoker can break it by applying pressure with his fingers, thereby releasing the flavorings so that they can change the taste of the smoking article.
- Smoking articles according to the invention can be produced from the segment according to the invention by methods known in the prior art.

- the smoking article is a filter cigarette and the aerosol forming material is tobacco.
- the smoking article is a smoking article in the intended use of which the aerosol-forming material is only heated but not burned.
- the hydroentangled nonwoven produced by this process is said to be suitable for use in the filter material described above. This means that it can in particular have all the features, individually or in combination, which have been described above in connection with the hydroentangled nonwoven fabric as a component of the filter material and are defined in the claims directed to the filter material.
- the aqueous suspension in step A has a solids content of at most 3.0%, particularly preferably at most 1.0%, very particularly preferably at most 0.2% and in particular at most 0.05%.
- the particularly low solids content of the suspension makes it possible to form an even less dense fibrous web in step C.
- the circulating screen of steps B and C is inclined upwards in the running direction of the fibrous web to the horizontal at an angle of at least 3° and at most 40°, particularly preferably at an angle of at least 5° and at most 30° and most preferably at an angle of at least 15° and at most 25°.
- the process comprises a step in which a pressure differential is created between the two sides of the rotating screen to assist in dewatering the suspension in step C, more preferably vacuum boxes or suitably shaped vanes create the pressure differential.
- a plurality of water jets are used to carry out the hydroentanglement in step E, the water jets being arranged in at least one row at right angles to the direction of travel of the fibrous web.
- the hydroentanglement in step E is effected by at least two water jets directed onto the fibrous web, the at least two water jets particularly preferably acting on different sides of the fibrous web.
- the drying in step F is effected at least partially by contact with hot air, by infrared radiation or by microwave radiation. Drying by direct contact with a heated surface is also possible, but less preferred because it can decrease the caliper of the hydroentangled web.
- a suspension 1 of wood pulp fibers and fibers of regenerated cellulose was pumped from a reservoir 2 onto a revolving screen 3 inclined upwards to the horizontal and dewatered by vacuum boxes 9 so that a fibrous web 4 formed on the screen, the general direction of movement of which is indicated by the arrow 10 is indicated.
- the fiber web 4 was removed from the screen 3 and transferred to a supporting screen 5 which is also rotating.
- water jets 11 arranged in several rows at right angles to the running direction of the fibrous web 4 were directed onto the fibrous web 4 from devices 6 in order to swirl the fibers and solidify the fibrous web 4 into a nonwoven fabric.

- the hydroentangled nonwovens A to E were each used as the filter material A to E according to the invention without adding further components.
- Three segments S1, S2 and S3 with different densities were produced from the filter material E according to the invention, each filter material being formed into an endless strand with a diameter of 7.9 mm and covered with a covering material with a basis weight of 78 g/m 2 .
- the endless strand was first cut into bars 108 mm long.

- filter materials according to the invention which contain a hydroentangled nonwoven, offer advantages in terms of biodegradability and visual appearance compared to the filter materials known from the prior art, without restricting their function as a filter, and also cost-effectively can be manufactured industrially from readily available raw materials.
Description
In
In

Figur 1 dargestellte Verfahren verwendet.
Tabelle 1 Vliesstoff A B C D E Filtermaterial A B C D E Lyocell® Fasern % 20 20 40 40 40 Holzzellstofffasern % 80 80 60 60 60 Flächengewicht g/m2 40 60 80 120 50 Dicke µm 257 345 497 688 299 Dichte kg/m3 156 174 161 175 167 Zugfestigkeit kN/m 0,23 0,38 1,60 2,83 1,15 Bruchdehnung MD % 6,6 7,0 12,4 20,0 15,5 Bruchdehnung CD % 28,1 21,7 29,8 42,3 Energieaufnahme MD J/m2 13,9 22,6 95,6 386,8 128,7 Energieaufnahme CD J/m2 20,9 40,1 143,0 333,5 - Die wasserstrahlverfestigten Vliesstoffe A bis E wurden jeweils als erfindungsgemäßes Filtermaterial A bis E verwendet ohne weitere Komponenten hinzuzufügen.
