Definitions

  • the present invention relates to firewalls and panel joint reinforcements for a firewall.
  • Firewalls function to prevent the spread of fire from one side of the firewall to the other side thereof.
  • the firewall functions to prevent the collapse of an adjoining building or part of a building and the resulting impacts inevitably caused by such a collapse.
  • Firewalls must meet certain standards regarding official regulations in terms of its fire resistance, for example pursuant to the National Building Code of Finland, Part E1.
  • One such test set forth in the Building Standards is EN 1363-2: 1999.
  • firewalls are predominantly constructed in concrete, necessitating heavy-duty foundations and not enabling a displacement of firewalls, for example upon alteration of use or expansion of the building.
  • EP 2 218 841 B1 presents a relatively light-structured firewall solution, meeting official regulations.
  • a double layered firewall is provided characterized in that the body components forming the panel is fitted with a corrugated steel sheet structure, which covers essentially completely an opening established in the middle of the body component and which extends partially to within vertical profiles connecting horizontal top and bottom profiles.
  • fire-resistant elements are mounted on either side of the corrugated sheet. These fire resistant elements comprise a core portion of mineral wool and metal places affixed to both of the core portion's main surfaces. While this panel meets at least the classification of EIM-60 of the National Building Code of Finland, there is a need for a panel which is relatively lighter than the firewall solution proposed in EP 2 218 841 B1 .
  • a sandwich panel is an assembly consisting of a lightweight core adhered between two relatively thin, strong facing sheets, typically metal, plywood or other lightweight material.
  • a typical sandwich panel is described in EP2 657 426 A2 .
  • the core typically comprises polystyrene foam, rigid urethane foam, injected urethane foam or other semi-rigid types.
  • the core may also comprise glass wool fibre, stone wool fibre and the like.
  • Sandwich panels have profiled joints which engage with adjacent panels on assembly as indicated in Figure 1 .
  • the sandwich panel 100 has a tongue 102 or male projecting part formed on one longitudinal edge of the panel (for example the upper end in a horizontal arrangement of a plurality of panels) and a groove 101 constructed in the opposing longitudinal end of the panel (for example the lower end in a horizontal arrangement of the plurality of panels).
  • a tongue 102 or male projecting part formed on one longitudinal edge of the panel (for example the upper end in a horizontal arrangement of a plurality of panels) and a groove 101 constructed in the opposing longitudinal end of the panel (for example the lower end in a horizontal arrangement of the plurality of panels).
  • the tongue 102 of one panel engages with the groove of an adjacent panel along the length of the panel.
  • An example panel may have dimensions for example of 1200mm along a vertical edge and 4000mm along its length.
  • firewalls increase the need for additional mechanical strength or resistance.
  • Increasing mechanical strength or resistance is achieved by stitching or mounting the firewall panels to the underlying support structure via mechanical fixings such as stitching screws.
  • Stitching screws are inserted through the joint formed by engaged tongue and groves in adjacent panels. These stitching screws mount the sandwich panel to an underlying mounting frame for mounting the fire wall on the relevant structure. These stitching screws reinforce the joint and provide a certain level of mechanical stability.
  • the facing sheets of the sandwich panel are relatively strong, the steel thickness in such a panel is generally limited to about 0.7 to 0.8mm. This alone does not provide sufficient mechanical strength where the mechanical demands, such as those which result in a fire, are high and accordingly. [insert page 2A here]
  • WO98/19023A1 discloses a joint structure for coupling building wall panels and similar components to each other and the framework of the building.
  • the components to be mounted must have at least one of their wide sides lined with a skin plate covering the core of the component.
  • the skin plate is shaped by bending at the edges of the components to be jointed into a tongue-and-groove joint structure.
  • the clamp element used in the joint is formed by an elongated strip of a G-shaped cross-section, said clamp strip being shaped to clamp together the skin plates of the jointed component edges in at least one position of the tongue-and-groove joint structure in the direction of the component thickness.
  • the individual components are arranged into groups of at least two components, after which the components are clamped to each other at their tongue-and-groove joint structures and elevated into their designated installation positions.
