Definitions
- the invention relates to a composition having a concomitant repellent and insecticidal action, said composition comprising hydrophobic silica as an insecticidal component and a repellent agent.
- the state of the art describes numerous insecticidal compositions for controlling insects, especially crawlers.
- the patent application FR3049163 describes a method of controlling crawling insect infestations, including bed bugs, located in a defined surveillance area. For the implementation of such a method, it is used simultaneously but in two separate compositions a repellent agent consisting of geraniol and / or citronellal and an insecticidal agent. It is described that the atmospheric diffusion of the repelling agent makes it possible to flush out the pests from their hiding places. In addition, the repellent action is completed by a second insecticidal action which may be a silica.
- the patent application FR3049163 describes two different compositions for exercising the repellency activity and the insecticidal activity and does not mention in any case a composition combining the two activities. In addition, no mention is made of any hydrophobic silica in a stable composition containing the repellent agent.
- the patent application W001 / 80645 or its equivalent EPI 276377 describes a gelled biocidal composition containing hydrophobic silica.
- the composition in the form of aerated gel can be sprayed as liquids using conventional spray equipment.
- the microparticles of hydrophobic silicas confer an acaricidal and insecticidal activity. Nevertheless, the authors recommend adding, in the composition, other insecticidal agents to increase the spectrum of the biocidal activity as well as a gelling agent to increase the stability.
- the composition comprises, by weight, from 30 to 97% water, from 0.2 to 5% of a gelling agent, from 2 to 5% silicone-treated hydrophobic silica microparticles and from 0.004 to 20% by weight.
- a biocidal agent such as hydroxycoumarin or synthetic insecticides (pyrethroids).
- hydroxycoumarin or synthetic insecticides pyrethroids
- the silica used has a particle size of micrometric order, ideally around 40 ⁇ m.
- the gelled composition defined above is obtained under high shear conditions, 1500 to 6000 rev / min, so as to cause a fine fragmentation of the water into tiny droplets covering the hydrophobic silica microparticles.
- the problem described in this application is to stabilize the composition.
- the solution provided is the mandatory presence of a gelling agent to obtain the desired stability. It is therefore not at all suggested the possibility of obtaining a composition containing stable hydrophobic silica without gelling agent.
- GB 1430207 discloses an aqueous gel composition for the treatment of air comprising, by weight, 89 to 95% water, 0.23 to 2.0% hydrophobic silica microparticles and 3 to 5 % of a volatile active ingredient, perfume or insecticide.
- Said silica is used here in a small percentage, to increase the mechanical strength of the gel but also to improve the thermal stability thereof.
- the composition may include a surfactant for also increasing the stability of the volatile active ingredient in the aqueous medium.
- the composition is in gel form obtained by virtue of the presence of a carrageenan gelling agent. There is no disclosure of a stable composition combining a repellent agent and nano-sized hydrophobic silica particles in a stable composition without a gelling agent.
- the target harmful creeping arthropods of the present invention are preferentially constituted by crawling insects, in particular ht bugs, cockroaches, tenebrians, weevils, fleas and mites such as ticks. Flying insects, especially flies, mosquitoes, wasps or hornets could also be treated with the composition according to the invention.
- the invention therefore relates to a stable composition
- a stable composition comprising, in the presence of suitable solvents, a combination of a repellent agent and hydrophobic silica particles, said silica having the distinction of fulfilling its role of insecticide by mechanical and non-chemical action.
- composition according to the invention is intended to be applied to any type of surface, including walls, soil, tiles, plastic, fabric, a biological membrane such as skin for sea target pests defined above.
- the composition For the composition to be stable and effective, it is imperative that the combined "insecticidal / repellent" effect be maintained in its functional state. In other words, each of these two elements must be able to fulfill its own function in the composition.
- the repellent agent degrades over time; this results in a decrease or even a loss of the repulsive activity vis-à-vis the targeted pests.
- the invention is based on a composition in which the repellent agent is protected from the degradation observed in the presence of hydrophobic silica particles.
- the subject of the present invention is therefore a stable and effective composition for controlling harmful arthropods comprising at least one repellent agent and a hydrophobic silica, characterized in that the silica is in the form of fine particles and the composition comprises at least one stabilizing agent of the repellent agent.
- the repellent agent is used within the composition to trigger the movement of pests even though they may be in perfect quiescent state in their hiding places.
- the hydrophobic silica particles and the repellent agent being within the same composition, they will be simultaneously distributed to the location where the said pests are located, the latter will therefore be directly in contact with the silica particles, and will be killed.
- the repellent agent is taken from the group consisting of an essential oil, monoterpene derivatives of essential oils of alcohols, aldehydes or esters type.
- the essential oils may especially be thyme essential oil, peppermint essential oil, or mixtures thereof.
- the repellent agent is a monoterpene derivative, such as geraniol or citronellal. Geraniol works well on most pests.
- the repellent agent is present within the composition in concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 15%, preferably between 0.9 and 2.5% by total weight of the composition.
- the composition according to the invention therefore comprises, as a second essential ingredient, a hydrophobic silica.
- Hydrophobic silicas have been chosen because they preserve their insecticidal activity in an aqueous medium, unlike hydrophilic silicas.
- hydrophobization chemical treatment processes, called “hydrophobization”, which make it possible to transform the hydrophilic silica particles into hydrophobes.
- the technique of plasma polymerization may be mentioned.
- the above-mentioned post-treated silica particles are thus obtained by a known hydrophobization process.
- the hydrophobization which may be partial or total, takes place for example by coating a thin layer of organosilicone compound on the hydrophilic silica particles, or by covalent grafting of alkylchlorosilane or polydimethylsiloxane compounds. at sites located on hydrophilic silica particles.
- the chemical nature of the hydrophobic silica particles obtained may be different depending on the method used and / or the nature of the hydrophobic compound employed.
- the hydrophilic silica particles are of mineral origin.
- hydrophobic silicas according to the invention have the particularity of presenting an insecticidal activity by direct mechanical means.
- hydrophobic silica kills insects by abrasive and / or absorbing effect.
- the abrasiveness of the silica induces lesions of the cuticle of the insects, causing injury, and thus causing the loss of the internal liquid of the insect and its death.
- the silica also acts by absorption of the fatty parts of the cuticles. The absorption of epicuticular wax present on the surface of the cuticle, decreases its sealing and induces a desiccation of the insect by loss of the internal liquid.
- the hydrophobic silica used in the composition according to the invention is chosen with a specific particle size in order to have an increased efficiency. Indeed, the finer the particles, the more they will offer a large contact surface, resulting in increased absorption and abrasiveness. Similarly, their nanoscale size can be inserted and act in the fine and sensitive places of the insect, such as joints joints, mouthparts and stigmas.

- FIG. 1 shows the insecticidal effect of the aqueous dispersion "ZIDIF-102C1" containing hydrophobic silica according to the invention on treated bed bugs.
- Bed bug test The tests were conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the "Transitional Guide on the Evaluation of the Efficacy of TP18 Products, Insecticides, Miticides, and Other Biocidal Products against Arthropods and TP19 Products, Repellents and Attractants". - ECHA, September 2016. The tests were carried out at 22 ° C ⁇ 2 ° C.
- bed bugs are used divided into 3 replicas of 20 individuals each (30 males and 30 females). It is observed that bed bugs begin to stir because of the repellent effect of geraniol and citronellal; 97% of them are killed in less than 24 hours; while bed bugs that served as "control" are still alive at 72 hours. After 48 hours, all bed bugs are killed by the aqueous dispersion.
- Cockroach test the procedure is the same as for Ht bugs. It is observed that all cockroaches are killed in less than 48 hours, while individuals who served as "control" survive for at least 5 days.
- Example 5 Preparation of a G1 insecticidal gel according to the invention The procedure is as in Example 2, to produce the gel G1 of the following composition
- composition was placed at different temperature and time conditions to evaluate its stability. The evaluation was performed at T0, after 2 weeks at 54 ° C, after 6 months at 40 ° C. At each survey, the composition showed a homogeneous appearance, no phase shift or settling. The dosage of geraniol remained in accordance with the control specifications.
- composition according to the invention thus shows good chemical and physical stability.
- the aqueous dispersion is obtained by diluting the gel G2 obtained in Example 6 by adding 50% by weight of softened water. Said aqueous dispersion therefore comprises: 20% by weight of 2-methoxymethylethoxypropanol,
- composition was placed at different temperature and time conditions to evaluate its stability.
It comes in liquid form and can be packaged in a nozzle sprayer
- the clay, the diatomaceous earth and the silicas are mixed.
- geraniol is diluted in tetraoxaundecane. This solvent / repellent mixture is then sprayed onto the powder mixture.
- the resulting powder has good chemical and physical stability over time.
- Figure 3 shows the bedbug mortality as a function of time, under the conditions of treatment with compositions A and B.
- the "no product" curve indicates the "normal" bedbug mortality under the conditions of the test in the absence treatment.
- Product Formula B product A with gelling agent:
- xanthan gum 0.1% xanthan gum, as a gelling agent.
- Figure 3 clearly shows that the addition of a gelling agent decreases the insecticidal effectiveness of the composition.
- compositions according to the invention have a very good chemical and physical stability as well as an efficiency on the treatment of creeping pests even and especially in the absence of additional gelling agents or thickeners.
