La présente invention concerne un procédé pouvant être mis en oeuvre de manière relativement simple et en même temps particulièrement performant et répondant à des exigences de sécurité élevées, pour faire fonctionner un dispositif de localisation (10) qui comporte, pour la localisation d'un véhicule ferroviaire (210) sur une voie (200), au moins un guide d'ondes (50) posé le long de la voie (200). À cet effet, le procédé se déroule selon l'invention de telle sorte que des données de mesure se rapportant au véhicule ferroviaire (210) respectif sont détectées par un dispositif de détection (81) côté voie, au moins une impulsion électromagnétique est injectée dans le guide d'ondes (50), au moins un motif de rétrodiffusion produit par rétrodiffusion de ladite au moins une impulsion électromagnétique est détecté et soumis à une évaluation, au moins une grandeur caractéristique spécifique au véhicule déterminée dans le cadre de l'évaluation est vérifiée à l'aide des données de mesure détectées et, en cas de vérification résussie de ladite au moins une grandeur caractéristique spécifique au véhicule par le dispositif de localisation (10), un signal de localisation basé sur l'évaluation dudit au moins un motif de rétrodiffusion et indiquant l'emplacement respectif du véhicule ferroviaire (210) est produit. L'invention concerne en outre un dispositif de localisation (10).
