Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for producing a magnetocaloric composite material, wherein a magnetocaloric powder, which consists of powdery particles of a magnetocalorically active material, is mixed with a binder in order to be able to form a magnetocaloric shaped body with the composite material thus produced.
- magnetocalorically active material In the case of a magnetocalorically active material, a change in a magnetic field acting on the magnetocalorically active material can influence its temperature.
- a cooling effect can be achieved with magnetocalorically active materials through periodic magnetization and demagnetization and a simultaneous removal or absorption of heat. While magnetic cooling using magnetocalorically active materials was initially only used in basic research in low-temperature physics to cool small amounts of material to temperatures of less than one Kelvin to less than one millikelvin, new types of magnetocalorically active materials have been discovered and developed in recent years been, with which a cooling effect can be achieved that also for household appliances such as a Refrigerator or suitable for industrial applications.
- the magnetocalorically active materials in question expediently have a sufficiently large magnetocaloric effect even at room temperature, which can be used economically for commercial applications in refrigeration technology.
- the magnetocaloric effect can be used in a suitable magnetocaloric cycle process for cooling a cooling material, a cooling system consisting of a cooling material to be cooled and the magnetocalorically active material connected to it in a heat transferring manner.
- the individual process steps of the magnetization of the magnetocalorically active material and the release of heat contained in the magnetocalorically active material from the cooling system, the demagnetization of the magnetocalorically active material and the subsequent possible absorption of heat from the cooling material and transfer to the magnetocalorically active material can all be combined in one continuous cycle.
- magnetocalorically active materials known from practice contain cost-intensive raw materials such as germanium or gallium.
- Other magnetocalorically active materials contain poisonous elements such as gadolinium, phosphorus or arsenic.
- the production of suitable magnetocaloric shaped bodies which can be used for commercial products is associated with high manufacturing complexity and high costs in the case of magnetocalorically active materials of this type. Nevertheless, due to the advantages of magnetocaloric cooling, attempts are being made to create a cooling circuit with, for example, a cooling device for new cooling devices To develop gadolinium-containing magnetocalorically active material and to be able to use it economically.
- magnetocaloric powder materials which consist of powdery particles of a magnetocalorically active material, have promising magnetocaloric properties.
- a magnetocaloric powder In order to be able to use a magnetocaloric powder effectively for cooling, it is usually necessary to produce a magnetocaloric shaped body from the magnetocaloric powder.
- a starting body also referred to as a green compact
- a magnetocaloric powder by pressing the powder, which is then compressed and cured by heating to a sintering temperature below the melting temperature.
- Hydrogenated metal-containing compounds with magnetocaloric properties are known which are currently believed to be particularly suitable for use in commercial refrigeration systems. If such a hydrogenated compound is subjected to a sintering process starting from a magnetocaloric powder, the addition of hydrogen would embrittle the magnetocalorically active shaped body in such a way that the magnetocaloric property of the metal-containing compound is considerably reduced or largely destroyed after a short period of use at the latest.
- these binders made of plastic or an epoxy resin usually have a low thermal conductivity, so that the magnetocaloric effect, which is generated by the influence of an externally generated magnetic field on the particles of the magnetocalorically active powder material embedded in the binder, is weakened and moreover an effective heat transport of the waste heat generated by the changing magnetic field is impaired.
- the binders based on plastic or made of epoxy resin known from practice have an aging effect which increasingly affects the functionality and the cooling effect of a magnetocaloric shaped body produced therefrom.
- JP2005120391 A and US2007220901 A1 show a method in which magnetocaloric particles are coated with a metal layer by plating or sputtering.
- the particle surfaces are activated beforehand, ie cleaned of oxides.
- the coated particles can then be formed into composite bodies.
- this object is achieved in that a metal or a metal alloy is used as the binder and heated to a temperature slightly above the melting temperature, that in an activation step a surface of the particles of the magnetocaloric powder is treated with an activating agent and the wettability of the particles is increased, that in a subsequent embedding step the surface-activated magnetocaloric powder is introduced into the binder, so that the binder envelops the particles and bonds to the particles on the surface, and that in a subsequent separation step the enveloped particles of the magnetocaloric powder are separated from an excess portion of the binder which is not required for the coating of the particles.
- all magnetocaloric materials which can be produced as a powder or which can be brought into a powdery state are suitable for the production of metal-bonded magnetocaloric heat exchangers.
- the method is of particular relevance for compounds that are easily brittle and therefore cannot be used as volume material in continuous operation without the inventive embedding in a composite material. This is observed above all in magnetocaloric materials with a first-order phase transition, since the conversion is usually associated with a pronounced change in volume.
- alloys with a proportion of an iron-phosphorus compound are regarded as advantageous magnetocaloric materials.
- Important representatives of this material class are compounds that contain manganese, iron and phosphorus, for example the compounds manganese, iron, phosphorus and arsenic (Mn-Fe-P-As), manganese, iron, phosphorus and germanium (Mn-Fe-P- Ge) or manganese, iron, phosphorus and silicon (Mn-Fe-P-Si).
- the doping or substitution of one or more of the following elements is particularly relevant for optimizing the magnetocaloric properties: nitrogen (N), boron (B), carbon (C), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), tin (Sn), gallium (Ga), indium (In), antimony (Sb), phosphorus (P), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), aluminum (Al) or arsenic (As).
- the wettability of the untreated particles of the magnetocaloric powder is very low in the case of the hydrogenated metal-containing compounds, which are regarded as particularly advantageous, so that the metals or metal alloys used as binders do not allow a sufficiently permanent connection or sufficient adhesion to the powdery particles made of the magnetocalorically active material would. For this reason, it is provided according to the invention that in a preceding activation step the surface of the particles is treated with an activating agent and the wettability of the particles is increased sufficiently to reliably and permanently encase the particles with the molten metal or the molten metal Allow metal alloy.
- the surface-activated magnetocaloric powder is introduced into the binding agent, so that the particles are enveloped by the binding agent.
- the binding agent bonds permanently to the surface of the particles activated by the activating agent and forms a seamless envelope for each particle.
- an excess portion of the binder can be separated and removed again from the coated particles of the magnetocaloric powder in order to reduce the proportion of the binder in the composite material produced from the binder and the magnetocaloric powder.
- a composite material with advantageous properties can be produced with a magnetocaloric powder consisting of a hydrogenated compound containing, for example, lanthanum, iron and silicon. Hydrogenated compounds of other suitable components such as manganese, iron, silicon and phosphorus or gadolinium, silicon and germanium can also be used.
- a suitable composite material can contain a combination of nickel and manganese, it being possible for additives such as indium, tin, antimony, aluminum or copper to be added or contained in each case.
- the magnetocaloric powder used is hydrated lanthanum-iron-silicon-manganese.
- a magnetocaloric powder with the chemical formula La (Fe, Si, Mn) 13 H and the element names La for lanthanum, Fe for iron, Si for silicon, Mn for manganese and H for hydrogen have magnetocaloric properties that are particularly advantageous for effective magnetic cooling within a room temperature Temperature range, so that this hydrogenated metal-containing compound can be used particularly advantageously for use in commercial and industrial cooling devices such as refrigerators.
- all compounds and elements which have a relatively low melting temperature of less than 350 ° C. are suitable for the metallic binder material.
- these are, for example, the metals tin (Sn), zinc (Zn), indium (In), plei (Pb), bismuth (Bi), cadmium (Cd), thallium (Tl) and gallium (Ga).
- the melting temperature can be adapted over a wide temperature range to the requirements of the magnetocalorically active material used in each individual case.
- the melting temperature must be particularly low and, for example, less than 110 ° C., preferably less than 100 ° C., so that Hydrogen can be prevented from the magnetocalorically active material in the production of the composite material.
- Other materials such as the hydrogen-free magnetocaloric materials La-Fe-Si, La-Fe-Si-Co or the above-mentioned compounds of the Fe 2 P family can also be processed at higher temperatures so that a metal or a metal alloy with a correspondingly higher melting temperature can be used.
- a metal alloy with a melting temperature of less than 100 ° C. is used as the binder. While the production of a composite material from a magnetocaloric powder in conjunction with a plastic-based binder or from epoxy resin is not practical and makes little economic sense due to the disadvantageous magnetocaloric properties of such binders, composite materials made from a hydrogenated compound and, in particular, from a hydrogenated lanthanum are suitable. Iron-silicon-manganese compound in combination with a metal alloy with a melting temperature of less than 100 ° C as a binder, surprisingly good for commercial applications and products.
- the magnetocaloric particles introduced into the melted binder are only heated to less than 100 ° C, so that no significant amount of hydrogen escapes from the hydrated magnetocaloric powder material.
- a metal alloy made from bismuth, indium, zinc and lead is particularly good advantageously suitable as a binder.
- a metal alloy made from these components, or a metal alloy comprising these elements can have a melting temperature of less than 85.degree. C., preferably less than 80.degree. At a melting temperature of less than 85 ° C, the metal alloy can be melted by heating to significantly less than 100 ° C in order to surround and envelop the particles of the magnetocaloric powder in an embedding step without a noticeable amount of hydrogen from the hydrogenated powder magnetocaloric active powder material is split off and released.
- the advantageous magnetocaloric properties of the magnetocaloric powder produced from a hydrated magnetocalorically active material remain almost unchanged during the production of the composite material.
- an oxide layer enveloping the particles of the magnetocaloric powder is removed from the particles.
- the particle-enveloping oxide layer is largely responsible for the low wettability of the particles and can mean that the metal alloy or the metal used as a binder does not form a sufficiently permanent bond with the individual particles, but rather after a while and promoted by mechanical stress flakes off the particles. For this reason it is advantageous that in the Activation step with the activating agent, the oxide layer enveloping the particles is reduced and, if necessary, completely removed.
- any means with which an oxide layer enveloping the particles can be reduced and removed can be used as the activating agent.
- caustic solutions or dilute acids can be used as activating agents, with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid or phosphoric acid in particular having advantageous properties for a suitable activating agent.
- a solution of zinc in concentrated hydrochloric acid also referred to as soldering fluid
- soldering fluid is used as the activating agent and is applied to the particles.
- soldering fluid Other compositions of an acid solution, which can also be referred to as soldering fluid, are also known from practice. Soldering water is commercially available at low cost.
- soldering fluid Due to the use of soldering fluid in various processes and areas of application, the properties of soldering fluid have been extensively investigated and known. However, other activating agents and in particular liquid activating agents can also be used in order to activate the particles of the hydrated magnetocalorically active powder material.
- a particularly inexpensive and efficient option for carrying out the embedding step consists in placing the particles of the magnetocaloric powder on a surface of the molten binder, that is to say on a surface of the molten metal or the molten Metal alloy are applied and that the particles are treated with the activating agent, so that the surface-activated particles penetrate into the molten binder. It has been shown that the particles of the magnetocaloric powder with a particle size between 20 and 500 micrometers initially remain on a surface of a melted binder according to the invention and do not penetrate the melt.
- the surface-activated particles penetrate the melted binder and are enveloped by the binder.
- the coated particles can then be extracted from the excess portion of the molten metal or the molten metal alloy and processed further to form a shaped body.
- the invention provides for the molten metal alloy with the magnetocaloric powder particles to be centrifuged, thereby separating the excess amount of binder from the magnetocaloric powder particles. After surface activation, the melted metal alloy or the melted metal form a permanent bond with the particles and form a solid envelope. Centrifugation removes an excess of the binding agent from the particles separated, so that only a thin envelope with the binding agent remains.
- the composite material according to the invention can therefore be permanently arranged in a suitable heat transfer fluid and used for magnetocaloric cooling without the need to fear an impairment of the structure and the properties of the composite material due to the constant contact with the heat transfer fluid. With the production method according to the invention, the long-term stability of the magnetocalorically active material can consequently also be considerably improved.
- a molded body is formed and solidified from the composite material in a mold-forming step.
- the composite material which is heated to a temperature just below the melting temperature of the binder, may become viscous and can be processed using extrusion processes known from practice and used for the production of extruded molded bodies.
- the invention also relates to a composite material with a magnetocaloric powder composed of powdery particles consists of a hydrated magnetocalorically active material, the particles of the magnetocaloric powder being surrounded by a casing made of a solidified metal alloy or solidified metal.
- the composite material has a weight fraction between 20% and 50%, preferably between 30% and 40% of the binder.
- a weight proportion of the metal alloy is sufficient to be able to use the customary manufacturing processes to form mechanically stressable molded bodies which have a long-term stability which is sufficient for practical purposes.
- the weight percentage is also not excessively high, so that with such a composite material or with a molded body made from it, efficient magnetic cooling can be achieved with little space requirement, without the magnetocaloric properties of the embedded particles being too much weakened by the metal alloy or the metal , or shielded.
- the composite material has between 60% and 80% of powdery particles with a particle size greater than 200 ⁇ m and a mass fraction between 40% and 20% of powdery particles with a particle size of less than 60 ⁇ m.
- the binding agent 3 can consist, for example, of a metal alloy Bi-In-Sn- (Pb), where Bi-bismuth, In-indium, Sn-zinc and Pb-lead.
- the binder 3 has a melting temperature of less than 85 ° C. and is heated and melted to approximately this temperature. Due to the low temperature of the melted binder 3 of well below 100 ° C., the hydrogen bound in the particle 1 from a hydrogenated metal-containing compound is not released, so that the advantageous magnetocaloric properties of the particle 1 do not change noticeably.
- the particle 1 is surrounded by an oxide layer 4.
- the wetting ability of the particle 1 is significantly reduced by the oxide layer 4, so that the particle 1 rests on the surface 2 of the binding agent 3 and cannot penetrate the binding agent 3.
- an activating agent 5 for example soldering fluid, is added so that the particle 1 with its oxide layer 4 is surrounded by the activating agent 5.
- the activating agent 5 dissolves the oxide layer 4, so that an activated surface 6 of the particle 1, which has been freed from the oxide layer 4 and which has a considerably higher wettability, is exposed.
- Figure 1b a snapshot of the manufacturing process is shown during the activation step, in which the activating agent 5 is used to dissolve and remove the oxide layer of the particle 1.
- the surface-activated particle 1 penetrates due to the increased wettability during an embedding step into the melted binder 3, which completely surrounds the particle 1.
- the binding agent 3 forms a firm, permanent bond with the particle 1 over the entire surface 6 of the particle 1, as shown in FIG Figure 1c is indicated.
- a separation step for example with the aid of a centrifuge, the portion of the binding agent 3 not required directly for a coating 7 of the particles 1 is separated off and the particles 1 provided with the coating 7 are extracted.
- the weight fraction of the envelope 7 made of the binding agent 3 in relation to the particle 1 made of the magnetocalorically active material is approximately 35%.
- a particle 1 surrounded by the sheath 7 made of binder 3 is shown as an example.
- FIG. 2 an example of a practical implementation of the manufacturing method described above is shown for illustration.
- a sufficient amount of the melted binder 3 is located in a container 8.
- a number of particles 1 are arranged on the surface 2 of the melted binder 3 and are initially surrounded by an oxide layer 4.
- the activating agent 5 is dripped onto the surface 2 and removes the oxide layer 4 of the particles 1, which then penetrate into the melted binder 3 and are enveloped by the binder 3.
- Particles 1 encased in this way form a composite material which can be used as a starting material for the production of extruded molded bodies.
- other production processes known from practice such as casting processes, rolling processes or pressing processes, can also be used for the production of shaped bodies.
- a cast plate-shaped molded body 9 is shown merely by way of example.
- a hollow cylindrical shaped body 10 is shown as an example, which was produced inexpensively from the composite material with the aid of an extruder.
- the mechanical properties and the properties of the composite material that are relevant for magnetic cooling and of the molded bodies 9, 10 produced therefrom can be adapted to the respective requirements within large areas.

Description

In
Fig. 1c angedeutet ist. In
Fig. 1d ist exemplarisch ein mit der Umhüllung 7 aus Bindemittel 3 umgebenes Partikel 1 dargestellt. - In
In
Fig. 3 ist lediglich beispielhaft ein gegossener plattenförmiger Formkörper 9 dargestellt.
