Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of painting substrates, more particularly to automotive body paint.
- the published patent document FR 3,011,753 A1 discloses a motor vehicle painting process, with a matt and textured effect.
- the method provides for the application of a first layer of a base forming the hue and then a second layer of a varnish containing matting elements and texturing elements.
- the base includes colored pigments conferring color to the vehicle.
- the varnish because of its textured and matte nature, drowns most of the dust particles in the texture and also makes the surface defects of the bodywork noticeably less visible.
- This method is advantageous in that it allows a paint capable of masking certain surface defects of the body without requiring retouching.
- the published patent document EP 1 810 757 A1 discloses a method for producing a multilayer paint and having a three-dimensional effect.
- the method comprises successively applying a first layer of a first tinted base, a second layer of a second base tinted on the first layer while the latter has not yet hardened, and then a third layer of a varnish.
- the first and second bases have different hues to generate a depth or three-dimensional effect. They may include color pigments and polishing pigments.
- the varnish may comprise agents that influence the gloss of said varnish so as to optimize the depth effect obtained by the first two layers.
- the effect of depth attained by the painting of this teaching is interesting but lacks to produce texturing as in the previous teaching.
- the object of the invention is to propose a process for painting a substrate, such as a motor vehicle bodywork element, which makes it possible to achieve a metallic, matt and textured effect and which is also economical, particularly in terms of case of retouching or repair after the first painting.
- the invention relates to a method for painting one or more substrates, in particular one or more body elements of a motor vehicle, the method comprising the following steps: (a) applying a first base with pigments; (b) applying a second base with pigments; (c) applying a varnish; remarkable in that the pigments of the first base are exclusively tinting, the pigments of the second base comprise effect pigments, and the varnish comprises texturing elements.
- All pigments of the first base are tinting pigments only.
- Effect pigments are pigments providing varying optical effects, i.e., effects other than those of merely giving a hue to the base in which they are present.
- the pigments of the second base are predominantly, that is to say more than 50%, effect pigments.
- the second base may also include tinting pigments with a certain transparency.
- the effect pigments of the second base comprise interferential pigments.
- the effect pigments may comprise metallized pigments (mirrors, spangled, marbled), pearlescent, interferential, reflective, phosphorescent, fluorescent, thermochromic, and / or flashy pigments.
- the texturing elements of the varnish comprise beads, preferably with a diameter of between 10 and 100 ⁇ .
- the beads are made of a material which remains solid at 140 ° C., the material preferably being polyamide.
- the varnish may also comprise matting elements, such as silica.
- the first base forms a layer with a thickness greater than or equal to 10 ⁇ .
- the second base forms a layer with a thickness greater than or equal to 5 ⁇ .
- the varnish forms a layer with a thickness of between 40 and 50 ⁇ .
- step (a) is carried out on a cataphoresis layer, primer or a textured varnish layer.
- the invention also relates to a body of a motor vehicle, covered with a textured paint comprising: a layer of a first base with pigments, applied to the body; a layer of a second base with pigments, applied to the first base layer; and a layer of varnish applied to the second base layer; remarkable in that the pigments of the first base are exclusively tinting, the pigments of the second base comprise effect pigments, and the varnish comprises texturing elements.
- the textured paint is obtained by the process according to the invention. The characteristics mentioned, especially previously, in connection with the painting process are also applicable to the painting of the bodywork mentioned above.
- the measures of the invention are interesting in that they make it possible to produce a painting with effects, such as in particular a metallic effect, pearlescent effect or an effect a chameleon called flip-flop, that is to say operating a color change according to the viewing angle, the paint being textured and can be applied in the form of retouching.
- effects such as in particular a metallic effect, pearlescent effect or an effect a chameleon called flip-flop, that is to say operating a color change according to the viewing angle
- the paint being textured and can be applied in the form of retouching.
- the constitution of the three-layer paint the first of which comprises a base with tinting pigments and the second of which comprises a base with effect pigments, ensures a consistent and regular arrangement of said effect pigments, even when the paint is applied to a surface with irregularities such as in particular the textured varnish of the original paint on which a touch is applied.
- the first layer comprising the base with the tinting pigments provides a smoothing function of the surface of the substrate, without this smoothing has an influence on the appearance and the final rendering of the paint.
- the rendering of the tinting pigments is indeed insensitive to the irregularities of the surface of the substrate on which the base containing them is applied.
- FIG. 1 comprises two views schematically illustrating the section of an original painting according to the state of the art (left view) and the same painting with retouching (right view);
- FIG. 2 comprises two views schematically illustrating the section of an original paint according to the invention (left view) and the same paint with retouching (right view),
- FIG. 3 is a logic diagram illustrating the steps for producing the paint according to the invention.
- Figure 1 schematically illustrates, in the left view, a section of a painting 102 according to the state of the art.
- the substrate is not represented.
- a first layer of a base 104 forming the hue of the paint is applied to the substrate not shown.
- This base 104 may comprise pigments or elements 106 producing a metallized effect.
- a second layer of a textured matte varnish 108 is applied.
- the varnish may comprise solid particles and elements producing a matt effect, such as in particular the silica.
- the corrugated profile of the outer surface of the varnish layer 108 corresponds to the textured nature of the paint.
- FIG. 1 illustrates the painting 102 of the left-hand view, forming a first, so-called original painting of the substrate, and a second paint 102 ', similar to the first paint 102.
- the tinted basecoat 104 ' is deposited directly on the outer surface of the lacquer layer 108 of the first paint 102.
- the tinted basecoat 104' conforms to the irregular profile of the lacquer layer 108 in question.
- the metallizing elements 106 take variable and irregular orientations. The metallized effect initially obtained with the first paint is then strongly disturbed and therefore becomes unsatisfactory.
- a second layer of a varnish 108 'similar or identical to the varnish layer 108 of the first paint is then applied to the base layer 104'.
- Figure 1 illustrates the difficulties of retouching a paint according to the state of the art.
- FIG. 2 illustrates, in a manner similar to FIG. 1, a paint according to the invention and the possibility of making alterations of this paint.
- the left view of Figure 2 is a schematic sectional view of a painting according to the invention.
- the substrate is not represented.
- a first layer of a base 3 forming the hue of the paint is applied to the substrate not shown.
- This base 103 may comprise exclusively tinting pigments.
- a second layer of another base 4 is applied to the first layer.
- the base 4 in question comprises pigments or effect elements 6, such as in particular metallising effect.
- the first layer is homogeneously deposited on a substrate (not shown) generally regular, it forms a contact surface with the second layer which is generally smooth and regular.
- the effect pigments 6 are then oriented in a coherent and regular manner.
- a third layer of a varnish 8 is then applied to the second layer.
- the first base layer 3 thus forms the shade of the paint 2 while the second layer of the other base 4 provides the optical effects of the paint 2.
- FIG. 2 illustrates, still schematically, a section of a first painting 2, said original, consistent with that of the left view, covered with a second paint 2 'similar to the first 2.
- first tinted base layer 3 'of the second paint 2' is deposited directly on the lacquer layer 8 of the first paint 2.
- this base layer 3 ' forms a surface exterior generally smooth in comparison with the irregular profile of the varnish layer.
- the second layer of another base 4 ' can then be applied to the first layer 3' in a regular manner, that is to say that its effect pigments can be oriented coherently, similarly to the second layer 4 of the first painting.
- a third layer of a varnish 8 ' is then applied to the second layer 4', similarly to the first paint 2.
- the first base layer 4 'comprising pigments solely tinting smooths the irregularities of the textured lacquer layer 8 of the first paint. Since this base does not include optical effect pigments, the irregularities of its contact surface with the varnish layer 8 has no visible impact on the perception of the paint thus deposited.
- the first layer 3 ' forms a regular receiving surface for the second base layer 4' with effect pigments. The latter can then orient themselves in a regular and coherent way.
- the lacquer layers 8 and 8 ' may comprise solid particles, that is to say remaining solid at the baking temperature of the paint or paints.
- the cooking temperature can be between 140 ° and 150 ° C.
- the material of the particles or beads may comprise polyamide.
- the beads may have a diameter of between 10 and 100 ⁇ .
- the layers of lacquer 8 and 8 ' may comprise matting elements, such as silica, for example in the form of powder.
- the lacquer layers 8 and 8 ' may comprise a resin of the mono- or bi-component type.
- the first tinting basecoat 3 and 3 ' may be of the acrylic or polyester type, or a mixture of both, and include pigments imparting to the paint its hue.
- the second base layer 4 and 4 ' may be of the acrylic or polyester type, or a mixture of both. It includes effect pigments. Effect pigments are pigments providing varying optical effects, i.e., effects other than those of merely giving a hue to the base in which they are present. For example, the effect pigments may be metallized (mirrors, spangled, marbled), pearlescent, interferential, reflective, phosphorescent, fluorescent, thermochromic, and / or flashy. Some of these effects depend on the angle of view.
- Flip flop paints are also called chameleon paints because they change the color according to the viewing angle. Changes in hue or brightness are possible, or even a combination of color and brightness changes. The optical effect is obtained thanks to the pigments included in the lacquer paint. Chameleon paints containing interferential pigments for tonal changes and metallic effect pigments for shine variations are therefore used.
- Interferential pigments react differently according to the wavelengths of the light that reaches them. While they reflect certain wavelengths of light, the interference pigments can absorb almost completely other wavelengths by a covering effect. Depending on the viewing angle, some wavelengths are absorbed, and others reflected. We thus obtain a different color according to the angle of vision.
- the interferential pigments can be incorporated independently of the paint base, by means of a gun placed at a distance from the object, however, there may be consolidation of the pigments during the vaporization. Pigments with metallic effects are generally in the form of flakes. Because of their arrangement in the painting, they reflect the light incident.
- the first tinted base layer (s) 3 and 3 'advantageously have a thickness greater than or equal to 10 ⁇ m.
- the second or tinted base layers 6 and 6 'advantageously have a thickness greater than or equal to 5 ⁇ m.
- the layer or layers of varnish 8 and 8 'advantageously have a thickness of between 40 and 50 pm in order to guarantee homogeneity of texture and hue.
- Figure 3 is a logic diagram illustrating the steps of application of the paint according to the invention.
- the first step is to apply the first layer of a base (3 or 3 'in Figure 2) containing tinting pigments.
- This first step is followed by a second step of applying a second layer of a base (4 or 4 'in Figure 2) containing effect pigments.
- a convection drying step for example of a duration of about 6 minutes with a step of 2 minutes at 80 ° C may be provided, particularly when using water-dilutable paints.
- the third layer of textured varnish (8 or 8 'in Figure 2) is applied. This follows a cooking step, for example for about 20 minutes at, for example, 145 ° C.
