Description

The present invention relates to a wheelchair of simple design and practical use for the user.

ARRIERE PLAN DE L'INVENTIONBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Most wheelchairs have a steering wheel for a driving wheel which is concentric with this wheel and which is external to the latter. The diameter of this flywheel must be practically as large as the diameter of the wheel it drives to benefit from the greatest possible motor torque for the same muscular force developed. The disadvantage of this dimensioning is that the drive wheel passes close to the ground and is often soiled by this ground. The user of the chair must therefore protect themselves from this contamination by wearing gloves. This is not always sufficient because taking into account the relative arrangement of the steering wheel and the driven wheel, the latter does not fail to dirty the user's sleeves. In addition, the driving wheel is a rear wheel whose axis is at least perpendicular to the backrest so that the user, to benefit from maximum driving range, will seek the steering wheel as far as possible behind his back, which is extremely tiring.

US 2,946,602 .This is why armchairs have been proposed in which the drive wheel is no longer coaxial with the wheel but is separated from the latter, mounted to rotate remotely, towards the front and away from the ground, a transmission being provided between this steering wheel and the wheel. As an illustration of such an armchair, we will cite the document US 4,274,650 which posed this problem from the end of the 1970s, or the document US 2,946,602 .

The relevant state of the art also includes the document US 4,155,588 which proposes a solution for improving the lateral transfer of a wheelchair user, in which the rear main wheel is moved to a rearward position, which makes it possible to retract the obstacle side that it constitutes above the level of the seat of the chair, when it is in its service position.

The document US 6,257,608 finally reveals an armchair with a driving wheel driven by a steering wheel which is coupled to it by a lateral transmission. The steering wheel can enter a side casing where it cannot be maneuvered by the user. The disadvantage of this construction lies in the limited travel of the steering wheel when operated by the user's hand, precisely because of the casing.

The invention relates to this last type of wheelchair designed on the one hand, for greater ease of use and on the other hand, for simpler manufacturing which takes into account in particular the recycling requirements after use.

OBJET DE L'INVENTIONOBJECT OF THE INVENTION

Thus the present invention relates to a wheelchair comprising two substantially planar lateral structures connected perpendicular to their plane by articulated means for bringing them together and spacing them apart, each structure being provided with a front idler wheel around an axis located in their plan and a rear wheel coupled to a motor member, characterized in that the motor member of the rear wheel is incorporated in a transmission sub-assembly consisting of a frame rotating two pulleys with a loop link which couples them in rotation, each sub-assembly being attached to each lateral structure equipped for this purpose with means for receiving the sub-assembly with the axes of the pulleys perpendicular to the plane of each structure, the aforementioned rear wheel being attached to the sub-assembly and locked in rotation to one of the pulleys while a manual drive wheel, attached to the subassembly, is locked in rotation to the other pulley.

In one embodiment of the means explained above, the chassis is an elongated casing which has two bearings in each of which a toothed wheel is rotatably mounted while a chain couples the two wheels.

The chassis is attached to one of the lateral structures by being articulated to this structure around an axis coaxial with the axis of one of the toothed wheels, the one associated with the rear wheel of the chair and by being angularly immobilized around this axis by at least one means waiting on the structure.

In known manner, the armchair includes a seat which extends between the two lateral structures when it is deployed. According to the invention, the chassis, separated from the aforementioned waiting means, can pivot around the axis of the rear wheel so as to place the drive wheel below the level of the seat. This arrangement makes it possible to free up lateral access to the chair when, in a known manner, the corresponding lateral arm is removed. This arrangement is very advantageous for the nursing staff when transferring the user from their chair to another support such as a bed.

Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description given below of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.

DESCRIPTION DETAILLEE DE L'INVENTIONDETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In the figures, identical elements are marked with the same reference numbers.

The armchair according to the invention comprises two lateral structures 1a and 1B (only one 1b is visible on the figures 1 to 3 ), here made from tubular elements 2, 3, 4,..., substantially flat connected together by articulated means 5 which allow them to be brought together and moved apart in a known manner to fold or unfold the armchair.

The chair conventionally includes arms B1 and B2 and rear operating handles 8 and footrests 9.

Each lateral structure 1a, 1b comprises waiting means such as those 10 and 11 of the figure 1 to receive a subassembly 12 represented in figure 2 . This subassembly comprises, in the case shown, a casing 13 which constitutes the chassis for two pulleys or toothed wheels 14 and 15 coupled by a belt or chain 16.

The means waiting to receive this sub-assembly are illustrated schematically by bearings 10 and 11 of the axles of the wheels 14 and 15. It will be noted that the bearing 11 is openable so that, when it is open, the sub-assembly 12 can pivot in the bearing 10. This representation illustrates any means which makes it possible to fix the subassembly 12 in a detachable manner on the corresponding lateral structure. This means can be placed between the casing and the structure, the wheel or pulley 15 being held in a bearing of the casing.

On the transmission sub-assembly 12 thus attached to the side structure 1 of the chair, a rear wheel 17 is mounted rotationally on the wheel or pulley 14 while a steering wheel 18 is rotationally locked on the wheel 15.

In the operational state of the subassembly 12, the steering wheel is ergonomically located within reach of the user. To the extent that we wish to retract this steering wheel under the surface 19 of the seat, it is sufficient to undo the connection of the chassis-casing 13 with the structure 1 at the level of the means 11 and to pivot this assembly around the axis common to the pulley 14, the rear wheel 17 and the bearing 10, to place the sub-assembly as illustrated at 13' and 18' on 1a Figure 3 . The means 20 represented in figures 1 to 3 as a half-bearing supporting the casing in its position 13, is not strictly necessary, the flywheel being able to rest on the ground in its retracted state in the lower part. A side arm B1 or B2 of the chair can then be removed (it can simply be fitted onto structure 1) or as in figure 4 for arm B1, folded outwards (if it is articulated for this purpose on the lateral structure) which frees lateral access for the user to install on the seat of the chair or extract it from it. In the folding version of the lateral arm, the latter advantageously constitutes a “bridge” for the user which covers the space extending between the seat of the chair and a new support, whether a bed or another seat, in particular a seat. of vehicle, to facilitate the transfer by offering support to the user during this journey.

This advantageous characteristic of the armchair according to the invention is illustrated by the figure 4 or the arm B1 folded outwards, around a horizontal axis articulation, forms a sort of gateway to allow the user to slide from the seat plane 19 towards another support not shown and which can be a bed, another seat, particularly a car seat or another wheelchair. The straightened position of each arm can be indexed by any means known as a screw 22. The same applies to its horizontal position, knowing that in any case, the folded arm will rest on the user's future support .

The design of the chair according to the invention has several advantages. At the time of construction, the transmission ratio and the diameter of the drive wheel can easily be adapted to the user's wishes. Furthermore, it is possible to design a transmission with a changeable transmission ratio by means of a gear changer like those of cycling vehicles. In another embodiment, an electric motor and a battery can be incorporated into the subassembly 12 to provide electric propulsion to the chair or, at the very least, starting assistance known in itself.

When disposing of the used chair, it is also easy to separate the different constituents of the latter to treat them in an ecological manner, in particular by being able to easily sort these components. In particular, it is entirely possible to design the transmission subassembly entirely in plastic material, easily separable from the structure of the chair which can or must remain metallic for reasons of resistance.

The claimed invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiments described above but extends to any alternative embodiment which does not fall outside the scope of the claims below.

Claims (4)

  1. Foldable wheelchair comprising two substantially planar lateral structures (1) that are connected perpendicularly to their plane by articulated means (5) for moving them together or apart in order to fold or unfold the chair, each structure (1) being equipped with a front idle wheel (6) around an axis (7) located in their plane and receiving a rear wheel (17) coupled by a transmission to a drive member that is remote from the rear wheel, characterised in that the transmission is incorporated in a transmission sub-assembly (12) composed of a frame (13) bearing two pulleys (14,15) that are free to rotate with respect to the frame and that are rotationally coupled to one another by a loop link (16), each frame (13) being mounted on each lateral structure (1) equipped, for this purpose, with means (10,11) for receiving same with the axes of the pulleys (14,15) perpendicular to the plane of each structure (1), the frame (13) also supporting the above-mentioned rear wheel (17), which is rotationally locked with one (14) of the pulleys, and supporting the drive member, which is a manual flywheel (18) that is rotationally locked with the other pulley (15).
  2. Wheelchair according to claim 1, characterised in that the frame is an elongate housing (13) comprising two bearings inside each of which a toothed wheel (14,15) is rotatably mounted, while a chain (16) connects the two wheels.
  3. Wheelchair according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the frame (13) is mounted on the lateral structure (1) by being articulated to said structure about an axis that is coaxial with the axis of one (14) of the toothed wheels, that which is associated with the rear wheel (17) of the chair and by being angularly immobilised about said axis by at least one means (11) on standby on the structure (1).
  4. Wheelchair according to any of the preceding claims, wherein each lateral structure (1) comprises an arm (Bl, B2), characterised in that said arm (Bl, B2) can be folded at least outwards about a horizontal axis so as to form a lateral walkway for accessing or exiting the chair.
