  • Dehydration reactions were set up using bentonite clay in a reaction vessel surrounded by an aluminum heating block.
  • the aluminum heating block was used for improved heat transfer between the furnace and the reaction vessel.
  • the aluminum heating block is a hollow cylinder machined from aluminum. It has an inner diameter of 1 ⁇ 2" to fit snuggly around the reaction vessel and an outer diameter of 3" to fit snuggly inside the furnace.
  • the heating block is 15" in length, the same as the furnace.
  • Reactor conditions such as temperature, flow rate, and pressure were recorded every 15 mins during each run.
  • product sample were taken every 15 mins over the course of three hours during the run and analysis by HPLC or UV/Vis spectra analysis was performed. Analysis by UV/Vis spectra peaks at or around 230 nm, 275 nm, and 290 nm were used to determined 3-HP, acrylic acid, and MEHQ levels in a sample, respectively.
  • the furnace temperature set-point started at 27 °C and then was raised to 300 °C after 2 hours and then maintained for the duration of the experiment, which was 7 hours total. With double insulation of the reactor inlet and outlet "T"s, a response to changes in furnace temperatures can be observed. The average inlet and outlet temperatures raise an average of 7 °C and 5 °C, respectively in response to the increased temperature. This is shown in FIG.5.
