Definitions

  • the invention relates to an auxiliary element for loading and unloading an inland-waterway vessel.
  • the invention relates particularly to an auxiliary element for facilitating loading and unloading of packed goods such as pallets.
  • Inland-waterway vessels are conventionally loaded and unloaded via cranes. Only a limited type of goods can hereby be loaded and unloaded in a commercially advantageous manner. It will thus be advantageous to transport bulk goods which can be pumped or containers having large dimensions with inland-waterway vessels. Smaller packed goods such as pallets cannot be loaded into the vessel in an efficient manner. Having a crane load the pallets one by one is time-consuming and therefore not commercially attractive. A crane moreover requires a considerable investment, and this is not attractive if the quantity of goods to be loaded or unloaded is small.
  • the object of the invention is to provide a solution whereby an inland-waterway vessel can be loaded and unloaded more efficiently.
  • an auxiliary element for loading and unloading an inland-waterway vessel with a deck gangway and a side coaming which has an upper edge
  • the auxiliary element comprises a platform which comprises on a first side one or more protrusions with which the platform can engage on the upper edge
  • the platform comprises on a second side opposite the first side a support which is provided so as to support on the gangway when the platform engages on the upper edge such that the platform can be placed substantially horizontally on the edge of the vessel.
  • This loading floor makes it possible to place pallets or other packed goods from the quay onto the loading floor using a forklift truck.
  • This loading floor also makes it possible, from the hold of the vessel and using a forklift truck (which is located in the hold), to pick up the pallets or other packed goods present on the loading floor and place them in the hold of the vessel.
  • An expensive crane is hereby no longer necessary to load the vessel, two forklift trucks (one on the quay and one in the hold of the vessel) being sufficient to load the vessel.
  • the support is provided so as to support on the gangway and thus prevent tilting of the platform.
  • the combined supporting of the platform on the edge of the vessel and on the gangway via the support provides for a firmly positioned platform on which pallets or other packed goods can be placed.
  • inland-waterway vessels such as the width of the gangway
  • an inland-waterway vessel must have a gangway with a minimum width of 60 cm.
  • Most inland-waterway vessels have a gangway of about 80 cm. This gangway must be clear during navigation and may not therefore be blocked by a permanent loading platform.
  • the auxiliary element according to the invention is highly suitable because it can be placed when the vessel is being loaded or unloaded, and can be removed when the vessel sails so as to thus comply with all regulations.
  • Said protrusions are preferably arranged in pairs on the underside of the platform so that each pair of protrusions can engage on either side of the upper edge.
  • Said protrusions are more preferably formed as two parallel upright edges between which the upper edge can engage. Movement of the platform in the direction of the hold and in the direction away from the hold is prevented by providing two protrusions or edges which can engage on either side of the upper edge of the side coaming of the inland-waterway vessel. A stable positioning of the platform is hereby possible.
  • Said protrusions are preferably formed as hook part on the side of the platform. Hook parts can be realized in simple technical manner and can allow the platform to engage in a reliable manner on the edge of the side coaming.
  • the support preferably comprises at least two legs extending from an underside of the platform.
  • the legs are preferably extendable so as to enable adjustment of the length thereof to the height of the side coaming. It is hereby possible to use the auxiliary element on different inland-waterway vessels with side coamings of differing heights.
  • the length of the legs is set to be roughly as long as the height of the side coaming as measured from the gangway in order to thus enable substantially horizontal placing of the platform on different vessels.
  • the support is preferably mounted displaceably on the platform such that the distance between the support and protrusions is adjustable.
  • the auxiliary element according to the invention can hereby be used on different vessels having different gangway widths.
  • the platform preferably comprises two parts which are mounted slidably relative to each other so that the width of the platform can be changed, wherein a first part comprises the first side and a second part comprises the second side.
  • the platform is typically placed horizontally above the gangway.
  • the width of the platform can be adapted to the width of the gangway of the inland-waterway vessel by making the platform extendable.
  • the surface area of the loading platform can thus be made larger on vessels having a wide gangway.
  • the platform can also be adjusted when a vessel has a narrow gangway so that the support, the legs, do not stand to the side of the gangway when the platform engages on the upper edge of the side coaming.
  • Figure 1 shows an inland-waterway vessel 1 lying at a quay 3 in the water 2.
  • Figure 2A shows cross-section II-II of inland-waterway vessel 1 of figure 1 .
  • the inland-waterway vessel has on its periphery a gangway 4. This gangway allows a crewman to walk around the cargo hold 7 when the vessel is travelling.
  • the vessel further has a side coaming 5 which forms a separation between gangway 4 and hold 7 and also defines the height of hold 7.
  • Side coaming 5 has an upper edge 6.
  • FIG. 2B shows an inland-waterway vessel as in figure 2A on which an auxiliary element 8 according to the invention has been placed.
  • Auxiliary element 8 comprises a platform 9 which is supported during use on the one hand by coaming 5 and on the other by a support 10, wherein support 10 supports on gangway 4.
  • Placing the auxiliary element on the inland-waterway vessel creates a loading platform 11 which adjoins the hold 7 and is adjacent to quay 3. It hereby becomes possible during loading of the vessel to use loading platform 11 as intermediate step for the cargo.
  • auxiliary element 8 With an auxiliary element 8 according to the invention it is therefore no longer necessary to have a crane which can extend from quay 3 into hold 7 in order to load or unload the inland-waterway vessel. It will suffice to have a lifting device, preferably a forklift truck, which can carry the packed goods onto loading platform 11. The packed goods lying on loading platform 11 can then be picked up by a second lifting device, preferably a forklift truck, and placed in the hold. This second lifting device is preferably located in hold 7 of vessel 1.
  • the auxiliary element according to the invention comprises protrusions 12 which can engage on the upper edge of side coaming 5.
  • the protrusions are preferably placed in pairs such that each pair of protrusions can engage on either side of the upright edge as shown in figure 2B .
  • Protrusions 12 in this way prevent the auxiliary element, once it has been placed on the vessel, from sliding away in the direction of the hold or from sliding away in the direction away from the hold.
  • the position of the auxiliary element relative to the vessel is hereby ensured during use of the auxiliary element.
  • the auxiliary element further comprises a support 10.
  • Support 10 supports the auxiliary element during use at the position of the outer edge of the vessel. During use the support extends for this purpose from the underside of the platform to the gangway of the vessel.
  • the support is preferably formed by two or more legs 10 as shown in figure 3 . These legs more preferably take an extendable form so that the height of the legs can be adapted to the height of the side coaming. Extendable legs allow the use of the auxiliary element on different inland-waterway vessels with side coamings of different height.
  • the support can be formed as a scissor element as shown in figure 4 . This scissor element likewise allows adjustment of the height of the support and also provides support to the platform at the outer edge of the vessel.
  • a further advantage of the scissor-like support is that it can be folded down when the auxiliary element is not in use, whereby the auxiliary element takes up less space and can be stowed away more easily.
  • Figure 4 shows an auxiliary element with an alternative protrusion.
  • the protrusion is formed as a hook part which is attached to the side of the platform and can engage behind the upper edge of the side coaming.
  • Figure 5 shows an auxiliary element according to the invention wherein the platform consists of two parts. These two parts can slide relative to each other in order to thus adjust the width of the platform.
  • the first part 13 comprises protrusions 12 and second part 14 comprises support 10. Because the width of the platform is adjustable, the distance between support 10 and protrusions 12 is variable.
  • the auxiliary element can hereby be applied on vessels with gangways of differing widths.
  • a locking element 15 is preferably provided in order to lock the position of the two parts relative to each other.
  • Figure 6 shows an alternative solution for applying the auxiliary element according to the invention on inland-waterway vessels with gangways of differing widths, wherein the platform is not extendable but the position of the support can be adjusted relative to the platform.
  • the platform is not extendable but the position of the support can be adjusted relative to the platform.
  • rails which extend transversely of the platform.
  • the support is mounted slidably on these rails.
  • the distance between support 10 and protrusions 12 is hereby adjustable.
  • a further auxiliary element (not shown) can be provided for placing on the auxiliary element according to the invention in order to adjust the height of the loading platform.
  • This further auxiliary element will be applied mainly when the quay is higher than the platform of the auxiliary element according to the invention.
