Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a mounting bracket for a window for installation in a roof structure and to the use of such a mounting bracket.
  • a window with a mounting bracket of this kind is known from EP 1042569 B1 .
  • Windows of this known type are usually delivered at the installation site with associated mounting brackets as well as an associated flashing matching the window.
  • the window and mounting brackets are adapted for mounting with the specific associated type of flashing, which requires mount-ing the window at a particular installation level in the roof structure. Mounting the window and its mounting brackets with another type of flashing will result in incorrect mounting of the window and/or the flashing. Consequently, flashings are traditionally provided in a variety of types, thus rendering the manufacturing and storage more expensive.
  • installation level is defined as the difference in the mounted position of the window between the top edge of the battens, i.e. the plane defined by the upper, outwards facing surface of the battens, and the top edge of the frame, i.e. the plane defined by the upper, outwards facing surface of the frame members of the window.
  • a window which may be mounted correctly using different types of flashing, thereby simplifying the mounting process and furthermore opening the possibility of combining windows and flashings not hitherto combinable.
  • the mounting bracket comprises a third leg portion extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the second leg section and being displaced parallel to one of the leg sections of the first leg portion in such a way as to provide a space between the window and an element of the roof structure in a mounted position of the window.
  • a window which may easily be mounted in such a way that a gap of a size determined by the position, i.e. parallel displacement, of the third leg portion is provided between the frame of the window and the adjacent roof structure in the mounted position of the window, such a gap providing a space allowing the insertion of an insulating material between window and roof structure and/or mounting of certain types of flashing requiring such a space.
  • such a third leg portion provides for a more robust mounting bracket, particularly a more robust second leg section, and consequently a more robust and reliable mounting of the window in the roof structure, particularly a more robust and reliable connection between the mounting bracket and the roof structure.
  • the top member and the bottom member each comprises a substantially horizontally extending groove
  • the side members each comprises a pair of substantially horizontally extending grooves vertically offset in opposite directions with respect to the groove of the top member and the bottom member, respectively
  • each of the two leg sections of the first leg portion comprises a flange which is essentially perpendicular to the leg section and positioned in such a way that the flange of one of the leg sections of the first leg portion may engage with the groove of the top or bottom member of the window, while the flange of the other leg section may engage one of the grooves of a side member.
  • a window in which the connection between mounting bracket and both frame elements at a corner joint may be achieved in a simple and straight forward manner, while still ensuring the possibility of mounting the window with different types of flashings.
  • each side member comprises two grooves being mutually displaced by substantially equal opposite distances with respect to the groove of the top member and the bottom member, respectively, the distances preferably being between 10 mm and 30 mm, more preferably between 15 mm and 25 mm, and even more preferably 18 mm or 22 mm.
  • the first leg portion comprises two leg sections both being adapted for connection with adjacent frame members at a corner joint, whereby the connection between mounting bracket and each frame member at a corner joint may be achieved in a particularly robust and secure manner.
  • the second leg portion comprises two leg sections being mutually displaced in a direction substantially parallel with said first leg portion.
  • a window is provided which in a particularly simple way may be mounted at one of two possible different installation levels, the installation levels being defined by the size of the displacement.
  • the second leg portion comprises a connecting section interconnecting the two leg sections of the second leg portion and extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to said two leg sections, thereby providing for a more robust and reliable mounting bracket and consequently for a more robust mounting of the window.
  • the two leg sections of the second leg portion are mutually displaced by between 10 mm and 30 mm, preferably between 15 mm and 25 mm, more preferably by 18 mm or 22 mm.
  • each of the two leg sections of the first leg portion comprises holes for passing through fastening members.
  • the second leg portion or indeed at least one of the leg sections of the second leg portion in the case such leg sections are provided, comprises holes for passing through fastening members and/or engagement members designed for engagement with a corresponding mounting bracket of an adjacent window and/or at least one flap folded in a direction towards the roof structure in a mounted position.
  • the window comprises two pairs of mounting brackets, the mounting brackets of each pair being identical, whereby the window may be mounted at at least two different possible installation levels using the same two pairs of brackets.
  • the mounting brackets of the one pair of mounting brackets are mirror inverted with respect to the mounting brackets of the other pair of mounting brackets.
  • a window 1 is shown in a mounted position at a first installation level used when mounting the window 1 with a first predefined type of flashing (not shown) in a pitched roof structure comprising rafters 20 extending in the direction of the roof pitch and battens 21 placed perpendicular hereto.
  • a first predefined type of flashing (not shown)
  • a pitched roof structure comprising rafters 20 extending in the direction of the roof pitch and battens 21 placed perpendicular hereto.
  • only the exterior frame of the window 1 is shown with two side members 4, 5 extending parallel to the rafters 20 and a top member 2 and a bottom member 3 extending parallel to the battens 21.
  • An auxiliary batten 23 is placed above the last continuous batten 21 below the bottom member 3, just as an auxiliary batten 22 has been placed above the top member 2.
  • auxiliary batten 23 is placed at an appropriate distance from the nearest continuous roof batten 21 in order to give way to positioning of the roofing material in such a way that the flashing can subsequently be placed in a satisfactory way, preferably without having to adapt it by an irregular deformation in order to obtain a secure waterproof flashing.
  • the auxiliary battens 22, 23 may also be placed abutting the respective adjacent continuous battens 21.
  • the top and bottom frame members 2, 3 is each provided with one groove 7, while each side frame member 4, 5 is provided with two grooves 8a, 8b.
  • the grooves 8a, 8b are displaced vertically and equidistant in opposite directions with respect to the groove 7 of the top and bottom frame members 2, 3.
  • the grooves 7, 8a, 8b define different installation levels at which the window 1 may be mounted in the roof structure.
  • the grooves 8a, 8b are each displaced with respect to the grove 7 by a distance being between 10 mm and 30 mm, more preferably between 15 mm and 25 mm, and even more preferably 18 mm or 22 mm.
  • the frame members 2-5 are connected with each other in corner joints 6, at which mounting brackets 10 are fastened in order to anchor the window 1 in the roof structure.
  • the window 1 is mounted by bringing a flange 30 of a leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the groove 7 of a bottom or top member 2, 3, and placing the window in the roof structure such that a second leg portion 12 of the mounting bracket rests on the respective adjacent auxiliary batten 22 or 23, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28 in the second leg portion 12 of the mounting brackets 10, down in the auxiliary battens 22, 23 and further down in the subjacent rafters 20.
  • FIG. 1 two pairs of mounting brackets 10a, 10b are needed to mount the window 1, the mounting brackets 10a, 10b of each pair being identical, and the mounting brackets of the one pair 10a being essentially mirror inverted versions of the mounting brackets of the other pair 10b.
  • mounting brackets may be identical in pairs otherwise than by being mirror inverted, or the mounting brackets may simply be four identical mounting brackets.
  • Fig. 2 shows a window 1 in a mounted position at a second installation level used when mounting the window 1 with a second preferred type of flashing (not shown) in a pitched roof structure similar to that shown in Fig. 1 , with the exception that no auxiliary batten is provided.
  • the top and bottom frame members 2, 3 is each provided with one groove 7, while each side frame member 4, 5 is provided with only one groove 8a.
  • the frame members 2-5 are connected with each other in corner joints 6, at which mounting brackets 10 are fastened in order to anchor the window 1 in the roof structure.
  • the window 1 is mounted by bringing a flange 30 of a first leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the upper groove 8a of a side member 4, 5, and placing the window in the roof structure such that a second leg section 12 of the mounting bracket rests on an auxiliary rafter 24 placed on top of the adjacent rafter 20, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28 in the second leg portion 12 of the mounting brackets 10 down in the auxiliary rafter 24 and further down in the rafters 20.
