Method for operating a cooking appliance having a cooking chamber (2), which is delimited by walls (4 to 8) of a muffle (3) and has a loading opening (9) on the front face, said loading opening (9) being delimited peripherally by a front edge (13) of the muffle (3), and having a lighting apparatus (12) with at least one light source (18a to 18d), wherein the lighting apparatus (12) is configured with at least one first light source (18a to 18d) for lighting up the cooking chamber (2) and for displaying information, in particular a number of an associated shelf level, which is activated in at least a first operating mode of the cooking appliance (1), and at least one second light source (29a to 29d), which is activated in a second operating mode that is different from the first operating mode, characterised in that a light cone of the activated second light source (29a to 29d) in the cooking chamber (2) is oriented, at least partially, with its optical main axis, forward out of the cooking chamber (2) and obliquely downward.
