Description

Packaging insert and method and apparatus intended to
produce the said packaging insert
Technical field
The present invention relates to a packaging insert, intended for use in the packing of products to keep the products apart, which packaging insert comprises a base part having a substantially plane surface, on which base part a number of partitions are arranged, which partitions are set out at a distance from one another along the base part and in such a way that the partitions extend up from the surface of the base part.
The present invention also relates to a method of producing a packaging insert according to the above and to an apparatus intended to produce a packaging insert according to the above.
Technical background
In the packing of various fragile products, such as, for example, glass bottles and aluminium profiles, various types of packaging insert are used to keep the products apart so that they are not damaged or scratched. A packaging insert can comprise a number of compartments, in which the products are placed before they are packed down in a packaging or in a section rack or placed on a pallet.
In EP1365962 a method for producing a packaging insert made of card is described, in which method a sheet is folded such that a divider is formed. This divider is fastened to a bottom sheet, which is fed into a production facility for the packaging insert. The packaging insert is provided with the desired number of dividers. The problem with this method is that it is complicated and calls for an advanced machine which can fold sheets to form dividers and guide them towards the bottom sheet, which is fed in parallel with the dividers.
There is a need for a packaging insert which can be produced in a neat and cost- effective manner with the aid of an effective method and a machine of comparatively simple construction. Summary of the invention
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a packaging insert which is designed such that the above problems are eliminated or substantially reduced.
This is achieved with a packaging insert which is of the type defined in the introduction and which is characterized in that a respective partition is arranged with a first set of feet and a second set of feet, by which feet the respective partition is fastened to the base material, the feet being constituted by a lower portion of the respective partition, which lower portion is folded in relation to the rest of the partition in such a way that the first set of feet is folded in one direction and fastened to the base part so that the first set of feet extends parallel with the base part and the second set of feet is folded in another direction and fastened to the base part so that the second set of feet extends parallel with the base part, in the opposite direction to the first set of feet.
The fact that the lower portion of the partitions is folded in relation to the rest of the partition and that the feet which are formed by the folded-down portion can be folded both in the one and the other direction produces a flexible fastening for the respective partition. The first set of feet and the second set of feet can also be folded in different directions, so that the partition can be fastened stably to the base part. Furthermore, such a partition can be mounted on the base part in any chosen direction with the same result in the form of a stable partition. A further advantage with the invention can be that a packaging insert is obtained in which the partitions can be mounted stably on the base part without being dependent on other parts of a packaging, such as side walls thereof.
The fact that each partition consists of a sheet in which the feet are formed by cutting/punching of at least one slit in the lower portion of the partition and by subsequent folding of the lower portion neatly produces a partition which can be fastened to the base part with the aid of the feet so that a stable packaging insert is obtained.
In one embodiment of the invention, the respective first and second feet are arranged in such a way that they can be folded in both the one or the other direction.
In one embodiment of the invention, the first set of feet consists of at least one foot and the second set of feet consists of at least one foot, which configuration produces at least two feet, which can be folded both in one or the other direction and which are intended to be folded in different directions in order to produce the stable construction. In a further embodiment of the invention, the first set of feet consists of at least two feet and the second set of feet consists of at least two feet, which configuration produces at least four feet, which can be folded both in one or the other direction and which are advantageously folded in such a way that every other first foot is folded in one direction and every other second foot in the other direction, so that the stable construction is obtained.
The present invention also relates to a method for producing the packaging insert according to the above. The method comprises the steps of: feeding a base material (of paper or card, for example) and cutting it off in the desired length to form the base part, feeding a partition material (paper or card, for example) and cutting it off in the desired length to form a partition, punching/cutting a lower portion of the partition so that at least one slit is formed, folding the slitted, lower portion of the partition in such a way that at least two feet are formed, the lower portion being able to be folded in both the one or other direction and in such a way that at least a first set of feet is arranged in one direction and at least a second set of feet is arranged in another direction in the opposite direction from the first set of feet, and fastening the partition to the base part by pressing the feet against the base part so that they extend parallel with the base part.
This production method is developed in order that all elements relating to the production of the partition and its fastening to the base part shall be able to be realized in a single manoeuvre. Once a partition has been produced and fastened to the base part, the base part is fed forwards and the process is repeated until the desired number of partitions are arranged on the base part.
In one embodiment of the invention, the lower portion of the partition is folded in such a way that two feet are arranged in each direction.
In one embodiment, the method comprises the step of: applying glue to the base material before the partitions are pressed thereon, in order that the partition shall fix well and a stable packaging insert shall be obtained.
The present invention also relates to an apparatus for producing packaging inserts according to the above. The apparatus comprises: at least one conveying device/conveyor, arranged to feed the base material, a first cutting unit, arranged to cut off the base material in the desired length to form a base part, a second cutting unit, arranged to cut off the partition material in the desired length to form a partition, a gripping unit, arranged to grab hold of a partition, a punch, arranged to slit/cut a lower portion of the partition in such a way that at least one slit is obtained, a folding unit, arranged to fold at least two feet, in opposite directions, in such a way that at least one foot is arranged in a first direction, and at least one foot in a second direction, in the opposite direction to the first direction, and an application unit, arranged to apply the partition to the base part.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the apparatus further comprises a glue application unit, arranged to apply glue in such a way that the partition is fastened to the base part.
By virtue of the fact that the glue application unit is arranged in such a way that glue is applied to the base part and that the partition is subsequently pressed thereon with the aid of the gripping and application unit, a stable fastening of the partition to the base part is neatly obtained.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the gripping device and the application device are constituted by a joint gripping and application unit, which means that the apparatus can be used more effectively.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the punch and the folding device are constituted by a joint punching and folding unit, which means that the apparatus can be used more effectively.
Brief description of the drawings
The invention will be described below with reference to the appended figures, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in schematic representation a perspective view of a packaging insert according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows in schematic representation a perspective view of an apparatus according to the invention, with which a packaging insert according to the invention can be produced.
Fig. 2a - Fig. 2k show in schematic representation the apparatus according to Fig. 2 and the various stages of the production process which are carried out according to the invention in order to produce a packaging insert according to Fig. 1. Description of a preferred embodiment
In Figure 1, a packaging insert according to the invention is shown. The packaging insert consists of a base part 1. The base part 1 has a substantially plane surface. On the base part 1, a number of partitions 4 are arranged. The partitions 4 are set out at a distance X2 from one another along the base part 1. The partitions 4 are set out in such a way that they extend up from the surface of the base part 1.
The base part 1 is constituted by a sheet of paper, advantageously a stiffer paper, for example various grades of board. The base part 1 can also be realized in card or thinner corrugated board. The base part can also be realized in plastic-coated board or made entirely of various types of plastics material.
A respective partition 4 consists of a sheet of expedient material, which is foldable.
The base part 1 and the partitions 4 can be realized in the same material. The base part 1 and the partitions 4 can also be realized in different materials.
The respective partition 4 is arranged with a first set of feet 3a and a second set of feet 3b. The respective partition 4 is fastened to the base material 1 with the feet 3a, 3b.
The feet 3a, 3b are constituted by a lower portion of the respective partition 4. The lower portion is folded in relation to the rest of the partition 4 in such a way that the first set of feet 3a is folded in one direction and the second set of feet 3b is folded in the other direction. The respective first and second sets of feet 3a, 3b are arranged in such a way that they can be folded both in the one or the other direction.
The respective partition 4 consists of a sheet. The feet 3 are formed by
cutting/punching of at least one slit in the lower portion of the partition 4 and by subsequent folding of the lower portion. The first set of feet 3a can consist, for example, of at least one foot 3. The second set of feet 3b can consist, for example, of at least one foot 3.
These feet 3 can be folded both in one or the other direction. They are advantageously folded in different directions, so that the partition 4 can be fastened stably to the base part
1.
In another example, the first set of feet 3a can consist of at least two feet 3. The second set of feet 3b can consist of at least two feet. These feet 3 can be folded both in one or the other direction. They are advantageously folded in such a way that every other first foot is folded in one direction and every other second foot is folded in the other direction, so that the partition 4 can be fastened stably to the base part 1.
The number of slits which are cut/punched in the lower part of the partition 4 can vary according to requirement and desire. The number of feet 3 can thus also vary. The way in which the feet 3 are folded can also be varied according to requirement and desire.
The size of the base part 1 and the number of partitions 4 per packaging insert 10 can be varied according to requirement and desire and adapted to the type of products to be packed. In one embodiment of the invention, the following measurements can be used, see Figure 1:
the length X of the packaging insert 10 can be varied between 100 mm and 1500 mm
- the distance to the first partition XI is about 5 mm
the distance X2 between the partitions 4 can be from about 10 mm and upwards
the length X3 of the foot can be between 5 mm and 20 mm
the width N of the foot varies in dependence on the number of feet, in the case of five feet, as in the figures, they measure about 20 mm.
the width Y of the base part 1 is about 99.5mm +/- 1mm
the width Yl of the partition 4 is about 100mm
the height Z of the partition 4 can be between 10 mm and 90 mm.

In the production of a packaging insert 10 according to the invention, a method comprising the following steps can be used:
feeding a base material of the desired material and cutting it off in the desired length in order to form the base part 1, Figures 2a, 2b. Figure 2c shows where the base part in this example is meant to be cut off and Figure 2d shows when it has been cut off in the desired length.
Figures 2b, 2c and 2d also show when glue 2 is applied to the base part 1, which step is unnecessary if the parts 1, 4, for example, are plastic-coated and can instead be heated and then pressed together and fastened to each other in this way.
- feeding a partition material of the desired material and cutting it off in the desired length to form a partition 4,
punching/cutting a lower portion of the partition 4 so that at least one slit is formed,
- folding the slitted, in Figure 2g lower, portion of the partition 4 in such a way that at least two feet 3 are formed, which lower portion can be folded in both one or the other direction and in such a way that at least one foot 3 is arranged in each direction,
- pressing the partition 4 firmly in place on the base part 1 by pressing the feet 3 against the base part 1, Figure 2h. The partition 4 is thus fixed to the base part 1 by the feet 3 being fastened to the base part 1. The lower portion of the partition can be folded in such a way that two feet are arranged in each direction.
The method according to the above can further comprise the step of applying glue 2 to the base material before the partitions 4 are pressed thereon. The glue 2 which is used can be cold melt, hot melt or a combination of cold and hot melt. This is further described later.
In an embodiment where the base material in the base part 1 and/or the material in the partition 4 is/are plastic-coated, it is possible, in place of glue, to heat the materials, or one of the materials, before the partition 4 is pressed onto the base part 1. In this way, they are fixed together when the parts cool down. The heating can be carried out using a variety of methods suitable for the purpose.
The apparatus/machine
In the production of a packaging insert 10 according to the invention, an apparatus/machine according to Figure 2 can be used. The machine according to Figure 2 comprises:
at least one conveying device/conveyor B, arranged to feed the base material, a first cutting unit A, arranged to cut off the base material in the desired length to form a base part 1,
a second cutting unit D, arranged to cut off the partition material in the desired length to form a partition 4,
a gripping unit E, arranged to grab hold of a partition 4,
a punch F, arranged to slit/cut a lower portion of the partition in such a way that at least one slit is obtained,
a folding device F, arranged to fold at least two feet 3, in opposite directions, in such a way that at least one foot 3 is arranged in each direction,
an application unit E, arranged to apply the partition 4 to the base part 1.
Figures 2a-2k show the various steps which are carried out by the machine in Figure 2 in order to produce a packaging insert according to Figure 1.
The gripping unit and the application unit are here both denoted by E, since it is the same overall unit which carries out the gripping of a partition 4 and then applies this partition 4 to the base part 1. Furthermore, both the punch and the folding device are denoted by F, since it is the same overall unit in the machine which carries out the cutting of a lower portion of the partition 4 and then folds the at least two feet 3 in different directions.
The function of the apparatus/of the machine
According to one embodiment of the invention, the control and monitoring system of the apparatus/machine is a PC with integrated PLC. Material is fed from two raw material rolls (base and partition) via two rubber rollers, each driven with servo motors. Two magazines with electronic "stack control" give a more uniform feed of the materials. Two more driven rubber rolls are positioned directly in front of the cutting units for base and partition (A+D), synchronously connected where so required (so-called electronic shaft). The base material 1 is fed forwards, the end is cut, glue spots 2 or glue strings are sprayed onto positions predetermined by the control system (in which the feet of the partitions will be placed). The glue has a so-called "open time", which means that it does not set until the feet of the partition have been pressed down into the glue. It shall then immediately adhere. The partition material 4 is simultaneously fed in a synchronized manner down vertically from above, is clamped/gripped tight, and is cut off in the correct length (desired height and desired foot length).
The punches meet and first punch one or more slits, whereafter the feet are folded in the same movement and by the same tool.
Once the base material has been advanced into the position in which the partition is to be placed, the gripped partition 4 is fed down and kept pressed down (for the programmed time) by a pneumatic cylinder. The partition is held in a grip F throughout these stages. The cylinder releases the pressure against the base material, releases the grip and moves up in return motion, at the same time as the base material is advanced into the next partition position (or to the glue-spraying position C if this comes before).
The height and number of the partitions, as well as the length of the base material, and the distance between the partitions, are programmed into the control panel (the computer).
Y - the servo motors are provided with an absolute position sensor (so that it knows where they are), which provides the facility to monitor the exact feed length/distance.
Z- when the desired length of the base material reaches the cutting unit for the same, the material is cut but continues to be advanced incrementally according to the above. The base material is then vacuum-sucked tight against the conveyor B. Normally so-called "hot melt" is used, in which the desired properties according to the above can be obtained. In order to apply this glue, it is heated so that it melts and can then be fired with compressed air rapidly and precisely in the desired quantity, etc. Glue must not land beyond the feet, for it might then scratch the profile when set, or make other marks.
So-called "cold melt" can also be used; it does not give the speed to fasten the partition to the base material, but can have other important properties, for example is more heat-proof. A combination of "hot melt" and "cold melt" can also be used. This calls for two different application systems.
It should be understood that the above description is an example and that the packaging insert, and the method and apparatus for producing the said packaging insert, can be modified in many different ways within the scope of the following patent claims.
