- the invention relates to a belay device for rope, comprising a plate having at least one slot for the passage of a rope loop, a retaining element integral with the plate, and a carabiner connected to the element of retained by means of a holding part making it captive with respect to the wafer.
- Such a belay device is intended to accompany and secure the evolution of climbers along a rope, especially during the progression of the first rope that is provided by the second climber in case of a fall. It can also be used to ensure the second roped when the leader of the rope has reached a secure point. In addition to the insurance functions of the first or second roped, the device also allows rappelling to ensure the safety of the descender by allowing it to slow its pace.
- the document WO 2007/080316 discloses an apparatus of the aforesaid kind, having a two-slot plate, a shackle-shaped retaining element made of elastically deformable flexible material, and a fixed carabiner rigidly to the handle by a holding piece.
- the spring effect of the handle imposes a fixed point of support on the carabiner.
- the tension of the rope drives the carabiner towards the plate thanks to the elastic deformation of the handle.

- the holding piece is formed by a clip comprising an orifice for the passage with play of the carabiner.
- the clip is made of plastic material and is formed by two snap-on parts on the retaining element.

- a belaying and restoring device for rope 11 is composed of a metal plate 12 with two slots 13, 14, a retaining element 15 extending perpendicular to the plate 12, and a carabiner 16 connected to the retaining element 15 by a holding part 17.
- the retaining element 15 is formed by way of example by a loop-shaped semi-rigid cable 18, the two opposite ends of which are fixed to the wafer 12 by crimping or any other method of assembly.
- the two slots 13, 14 oblong are parallel and arranged side by side being separated from each other by an intermediate wall 19 to which is fixed the cable 18 of the retaining element 15.
- the cable 18 is preferably of steel, wrapped in a plastic sheath of circular section.
- the holding piece 17 of the carabiner 16 is formed as an example by a plastic clip, having two parts 17a, 17b snap-fit on the cable 18.
- the portion 17a has a protuberance in which is provided a hole 20 allowing movement bidirectional limited sliding of the carabiner 16 between an abutment position against the plate 12 during the locking of the rope 11 ( fig 6 ), and a spread position when unlocking ( fig 7 ).
- the two parts 17a, 17b are advantageously interconnected by a hinge for opening or closing the clip.
- Each portion 17a, 17b of the clip is shaped according to a V, whose two guide branches have a semicircular section, having a diameter slightly greater than that of the cable 18.
- the abutting of the two parts 17a, 17b holds the clip on the cable 18 with formation of a slight clearance, allowing movement of the clip by sliding along the central zone of the cable 18.
- the insertion of the carabiner 16 in the orifice 20 of the part 17a is carried out when the clip is open ( fig 1 to 3 ). Then simply place the guide branches of the portion 17a on the cable 18, and fold down the other complementary portion 17b for closing the clip ( fig 4 and 5 ). The carabiner 16 is thus mounted captive following the snap of the clip on the cable 18.
- the belay apparatus 10 may be used with a single rope or a double rope.
- the figure 8 shows the example of a simple rope, a loop of the rope 11 passes through one of the slots 13, 14 of the plate 12.
- the carabiner 16 perpendicularly crosses the loop of the rope after opening its pivoting finger, and is simultaneously hooked to the shoulder (not shown) of the user.
- the carabiner 16 is spaced from the plate 12 and allows the scrolling of the rope 11 during the normal progression of the first rope attached to the upper strand of the rope.
- the fall of the first rope causes the locking of the rope 11 after sliding of the carabiner 16 against the plate 12.
- the carabiner 16 is moved freely in the hole 20 of the clip by the tension of the rope 11, until coming into stop against the plate 12 to confirm the blockage.
- the Figures 8 and 9 represent the apparatus 10 for a user respectively right-handed and left-handed.
- the carabiner 16 is hooked to its harness, and its right or left hand controls the downstream end of the rope 11 to ensure the lead rope.
- the passage of the right-handed or left-handed mode occurs after inverting the wafer 12, the holding part 17 being adaptable to the cable 18 independently of the chosen mode.
