Vor dem Weitertransport zum Verbraucher werden diese zum Schutz vor negativen Umgebungsbedingungen und Beschädigungen sowie zur Anbringung von Kennzeichnungen in einer Packanlage mit Verpackungsmaterial verpackt. Bei diesem Vorgang wird die jeweilige Materialbahnrolle mit einer Verpackungsmaterialbahn in Umfangsrichtung umhüllt, wobei die Stirnseiten über ein separates Verpackungselement in Form so genannter Stirndeckel geschützt werden. Dazu wird häufig eine Stirndeckeleinheit aus einem Innen- und einem Außenstirndeckel an der jeweiligen Stirnseite vorgesehen. Die Innenstirndeckel werden an die Stirnseiten angelegt. Nach der Umhüllung mit der Verpackungsmaterialbahn in Umfangsrichtung, bei welcher ein an den Stirnseiten überstehender faltbarer Rand belassen wird, wird der einzelne Innenstirndeckel in seiner Lage gegenüber der Materialbahnrolle in axialer Richtung durch das Umklappen des faltbaren Randes fixiert. An den umgeschlagenen und die jeweilige Stirnseite zum Teil überdeckenden Faltrand sowie zusätzlich am Innenstirndeckel wird dann der Außenstirndeckel befestigt. Über die Fixierung des Außenstirndeckels an den Falträndern und am Innenstirndeckel wird die Lage des Innenstirndeckels ebenfalls fixiert. Der einzelne Außenstirndeckel wird dazu an der mit dem Innenstirndeckel zu verbindenden Seite mit einem Adhäsionsmittel, insbesondere Klebstoff oder einer unter Wärme schmelzflüssigen Beschichtung versehen und an diesen, sowie den umgefalteten Faltrand angepresst. Die Taktzeit zum Verpacken einer Materialbahnrolle bestimmt sich als Funktion der erforderlichen Zeitdauer zur Anbringung der Umfangsumhüllung und Positionierung der Innenstirndeckel, wobei zur Realisierung einer kontinuierlichen Betriebsweise in einer der nachfolgenden Arbeitsstationen zur Anbringung der Außenstirndeckel vorzugsweise die gleiche Taktzeit wie für die Umhüllung und Anbringung der Innenstirndeckel gewählt wird. Der Antrieb zum Ab- beziehungsweise Aufwickeln wird dann in der Regel abgeschaltet oder abgebremst, so dass die einzelnen Packmaterialbereiche nacheinander, insbesondere schrittweise der Trenneinrichtung 29 zugeordnet sind, wobei der erforderliche Stirndeckel 6, hier beispielhaft 6.2I über die Trenneinrichtung 29 aus dem abgewickelten und flächig aufgespannten Packmaterialbahnbereich 31 herausgetrennt wird. Dieser Stirndeckel 6 wird dann über die Einrichtung 5 entnommen. Die Entnahme erfolgt in einem so genannten Entnahmebereich 16, der hier dem Trennbereich 17 an der Einrichtung 8 entspricht.
