Description

    Technical Field
  • The invention concerns a hinge, in particular a flag hinge, for doors or windows, comprising a frame hinge part for fixing to a frame and a leaf hinge part for fixing to a leaf of the window or the door, wherein one of the hinge parts has a hinge pin and the other hinge part has a pin receiving means for the hinge pin.
  • Background Art
  • The invention concerns in particular a flag hinge which is adjustable for altering the position of the sash, leaf or casement pivotably connected by the flag hinge in various directions. Flag hinges of that kind are known for example from European patent application EP 1 126 115 A2 and European patent application EP 1 126 113 A2 to the present applicants. Thus, for heightwise adjustment of the leaf, the pin receiving means is formed by a height-adjustable sleeve (see EP 1 126 113 A2 ). Either the hinge pin or the sleeve can be eccentric to adjust the spacing of the closed leaf from the frame.
  • In addition, in accordance with the disclosure of EP 1 126 115 , the leaf hinge part can have a support portion and an adjustment portion. The adjustment portion is guided on the support portion displaceably in a horizontal direction parallel to the plane of the leaf. The adjustment portion can be fixed in various positions and carries the pin or the pin receiving means. The position of the closed leaf in the opening of the frame can be adjusted in that way.
  • Usually the frame hinge parts of flag hinges of that kind are screwed on to the front side of the frame in the immediate proximity of the rabbet surface of the frame. In that case the pin receiving means is disposed completely in front of the front side of the frame. Flag hinges are also known in which the pin receiving means is disposed in part in front of the front side of the frame and in part in front of the front side of the leaf. The axis of rotation of the hinge is then substantially in the centre of the gap between the frame and the leaf. In the present case the term 'front side' describes the surface of the leaf or casement on which the leaf hinge part is fixed and the normal of which faces in the direction of the opening of the leaf or the surface, parallel thereto, of the frame.
  • Disclosure of Invention
  • The object of the present invention is substantially to avoid disturbing components of the flag hinge in the region of the frame.
  • In accordance with the invention that object is attained in that the pin and the pin receiving means of the fitted hinge are disposed completely in front of the front side of the leaf, wherein the front side of the frame is free of elements of the hinge.
  • In other words the flag hinge according to the invention is of such a structure that the leaf hinge part including the receiving means for the hinge pin or the hinge pin itself is in front of the front side of the leaf or in the case of profile leaves the leaf profile. The front side of the frame or the frame profile is substantially free from elements of the hinge. In the case of profile frames, claddings or decorations can be fitted at the front side of the frame. No components of the flag hinge cause a problem in that respect as the front side of the frame is free from elements of that kind. As the pin receiving means and the pin are completely in front of the front side of the leaf, the axis of rotation of the flag hinge also extends there.
  • In a practical embodiment the frame hinge part has a fixing plate which is screwed against a rabbet surface of the frame. The rabbet surface is the part which is extends from the front side of the frame towards the back and which is disposed opposite to a corresponding rabbet surface of the leaf. It extends substantially at a right angle to the front side of the frame and transversely with respect to the plane of the window or door. The fixing plate of the frame hinge part is consequently inserted into the gap between the frame and the leaf and there screwed to the frame. The portion of the frame hinge part, on which the hinge pin is arranged, projects from the fixing plate towards the centre of the door or window opening so that it is in front of the front side of the leaf.
  • In practice the fixing plate can have at least one rib which can be inserted into a groove in the rabbet surface of the frame. Particularly in the case of profile frames consisting of plastic profile members or metal profile members, grooves for seals and fitments are provided on the rabbet surfaces. Those grooves can be filled by ribs on the fixing plate. The force which can be transmitted by the fixing plate is increased thereby.
  • Consequently the ribs project towards the grooves of the frame profile, the pin receiving means being arranged at the side of the fixing plate, that is opposite to the ribs.
  • At least two different fixing locations are afforded for the leaf hinge part. In a practical embodiment it can be arranged in the rabbet surface of the leaf, that is opposite to the rabbet surface of the frame. In that case the leaf hinge part has a similar fixing plate to the frame hinge part. The two fixing plates are disposed one beneath the other in the gap between the frame and the leaf.
  • In an alternative practical embodiment the leaf hinge part can be fixed on the front side of the leaf. It can either be screwed to the leaf from the front side or it can be connected to the leaf by way of fixing pins which project into bores in the leaf. A combined pin/screw fixing for fixing the leaf hinge part to the front side of the leaf profile is also employed in practice.
  • The leaf hinge part fixed on the front side of the leaf can additionally have a holding bar which, when the leaf hinge part is mounted in place, bears against the rabbet surface of the leaf. That holding bar increases the stability of the fixing of the leaf hinge part to the leaf. In the flag hinge according to the invention the hinge pin can be displaced towards the centre of the leaf in relation to the holding bar. The fixing elements such as screws and pins which co-operate with the front side of the leaf are still further displaced towards the centre of the leaf in this flag hinge, in relation to the hinge pin. Consequently the hinge pin and the pin receiving means are disposed between the fixing elements for fixing the leaf hinge part on the front side of the leaf and the holding bar for fixing to the rabbet surface. In practice the holding bar can form the terminal closure wall part of the leaf hinge part, that faces towards the frame. The fact that the hinge pin is disposed between the holding bar and the fixing elements for fixing the leaf hinge part on the front side of the leaf provides for particularly favourable transmission of forces to the leaf. In the case of conventional door hinge plates in which the axis of the pin is approximately in the centre of the gap between the frame and the leaf or is completely in front of the frame, that displacement of the axis of the pin means that higher moments can be transmitted to the fixing elements of the leaf hinge part. Those moments are substantially reduced if, in the flag hinge according to the invention, the entire pin and the pin axis are arranged between the fixing elements (screws and pins) which are displaced towards the centre of the leaf and the elements bearing against the outer rabbet surface of the leaf (holding bar, possibly also screwed to the leaf).
  • As already mentioned hereinbefore the leaf hinge part can have a support part and an adjustment part. The support part is fixed directly to the leaf. That fixing is effected by means of pins, screws and optionally the holding bar which can in turn be screwed in place. The adjustment part is guided displaceably on the support part in such a way that it is displaceable in the horizontal direction and parallel to the plane of the leaf. The adjustment part can be fixed on the support part in different displacement positions by screw means which project through the adjustment part and engage into the support part and possibly the leaf profile. The pin or the pin receiving means is arranged on the adjustment part. In that way, the position of the axis of rotation of the flag hinge can be altered in relation to the edge of the leaf, that is parallel thereto, in order to provide for optimum adjustment of the position of the leaf in the door or window opening.
  • The pin receiving means can also be adjustable in height and can have a sleeve, for adjustment purposes. The sleeve can be supported on a screwthreaded plug, by which its fitting height is adjustable in relation to the fixing points of the hinge part. A height-adjustable sleeve of that kind can in practice be arranged in the frame hinge part. It is however also possible to provide for height adjustment of that kind on the leaf hinge part. For that purpose, an elongate part of the frame hinge part has a vertically extending cylindrical bore which at its lower end has a female screwthread into which the screwthreaded plug is screwed. In practice a female screwthread can be arranged at each end of the cylindrical bore. In that way the frame hinge part can be mounted alternatively on the right side of the frame or the left side thereof. The screwthreaded plug is screwed into the respective lower female screwthread and carries the sleeve.
  • Finally the position of the hinge axis can be varied in the direction perpendicular to the opening of the door or the window in the frame. For that purpose the bore in the sleeve for receiving the hinge pin can be eccentric. Rotation of the sleeve in a bore in a hinge part makes it possible in that way to implement different spacings between the axis of the flag hinge and the plane of the door opening.
  • Alternatively the hinge pin can be integrally connected to a fixing pin. The hinge pin and the fixing pin project into pin receiving means, of which one is arranged at the leaf hinge part and one is arranged at the frame hinge part. The fixing pin can be eccentric relative to the hinge pin and can be arrested in various rotational positions in the corresponding receiving means. It is also possible in that way to vary the position of the axis of rotation in relation to the hinge part with the receiving means for the fixing pin.
  • Brief Description of Figures in the Drawings
  • Embodiments of the invention are described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
  • Figure 1 shows a diagrammatic view of a flag hinge according to the invention fixed to a leaf profile and a frame profile,
  • Figure 2 shows a plan view of the sectioned profiles of Figure 1 with the flag hinge according to the invention fixed thereto,
  • Figure 3 shows a front view of the flag hinge shown in Figures 1 and 2,
  • Figure 4 shows an exploded view of the components of the flag hinge of Figures 1 to 3,
  • Figure 5 shows a plan view of the frame hinge part of the flag hinge according to the invention, and
  • Figure 6 shows a view of the frame hinge part in section along section line VI-VI in Figure 5.
  • Embodiment(s) of the Invention
  • The flag hinge shown in Figures 1 to 5 comprises a frame hinge part 1 and a leaf hinge part 2. The flag hinge is shown in the drawings in conjunction with a frame 5 comprising a plurality of frame profiles and a leaf or casement 17 comprising a plurality of leaf profiles. The frame 5 either comprises a profile frame which is open in the bottom region or, in particular in the case of a window, a closed, generally rectangular profile frame. In the present case the leaf 17 also comprises a profile frame. The drawings show only parts of the frame profile 5 and the leaf profile 17 which are disposed in mutually juxtaposed relationship and to which the hinge parts 1, 2 are fixed. It is however also possible to use other door or window constructions in connection with the flag hinge according to the invention, for example wood frame assemblies as the frames and closed movable door leaf members as the leaves.
  • The frame hinge part 1 has a fixing plate 3 which is screwed against a rabbet surface 4 of the frame profile 5 of a profile system for doors or windows. The fixing screws 6 can be seen in Figure 2. The screw holes 7 in the fixing plate 3, through which the fixing screws 6 project, are shown in Figure 4.
  • As in particular Figure 1 shows the frame profile 5 has a fitment groove 8 and a sealing groove 9. As Figure 5 shows the fixing plate 3, on the side towards the frame profile 5, has a wide rib 10 which projects into the fitment groove 8. It also has a narrow groove 11 projecting into the sealing groove 9. The ribs 10, 11 provide for a firm connection between the fixing plate 3 of the frame hinge part 1 and the rabbet surface 4 of the frame profile 5, in addition to the fixing screws 6.
  • Figures 4 and 5 further show an elongate cylindrical part 12 of the frame hinge part 1, that has a cylindrical bore 27 into which a receiving sleeve 13 can be inserted. The upper and lower portions of the cylindrical part 12 each have a respective female screwthread 28, 29 (see Figure 6). A screwthreaded plug 14 can be screwed into the downwardly disposed female screwthread 29. The receiving sleeve 13 is supported on the screwthreaded plug 14 and forms the receiving means for the hinge pin 15 (Figure 4) of the flag hinge. When the screwthreaded plug 14 is screwed into the elongate part 14 from below, the sleeve-shaped pin receiving means 13 is lifted. That causes the leaf or casement carried by the hinge pin 15 to be displaced upwardly. If the frame hinge part 1 is to be mounted at the other side of the frame, it is rotated about its horizontal axis transversely with respect to the plane of the frame opening. The female screwthread 28 is then downward and can receive the screwthreaded plug 14. Consequently the present frame hinge part 1 can be mounted both on the right side of the frame and also on its left side.
  • Figure 5 also shows that the elongate part 12 is rounded on the side towards the leaf, concentrically with respect to the axis of the cylindrical bore 27 so that the leaf profile 17 can pivot without interference upon opening of the leaf about the axis of the cylindrical bore 27 which corresponds to the hinge axis of the flag hinge.
  • The elongate part 12 projects on the side of the fixing plate 3, that is opposite to the ribs 10, 11. As can be seen in particular from Figure 3 the elongate part 12 with the receiving means for the hinge pin is disposed almost completely in front of the front side 16 of the leaf profile 17. In that way the front side 18 of the frame profile 5 remains completely free from component parts of the flag hinge. The hinge pin and the pin receiving means of the fitted flag hinge are disposed completely in front of the front side 16 of the leaf profile 17 and in the region of the gap between the leaf profile 17 and the frame profile 5.
  • It can also be seen in particular from Figure 4 that the leaf hinge part 2 is composed of a support part 19 and an adjustment part 20. The support part 19 is screwed fast directly to the leaf profile 17. The fixing screws 21 (see Figure 2) secure the adjustment part 20 firmly to the support part 12 upon being tightened. A holding bar 26 of the support part 19 bears against the front portion of the leaf rabbet surface. The holding bar 26 extends perpendicularly to the main plane of the support part 19.
  • Arranged between the adjustment part 20 and the support part 19 is an eccentric 22 (Figure 4) which provides for lateral displacement of the adjustment part 20 in relation to the support part 19 which is fixed to the frame profile 17, when the fixing screws 21 of the leaf hinge part 2 are loosened. The precise mode of operation of the eccentric adjustment drive is set forth in above-mentioned EP 1 126 115 A2 . The adjustment part 20 is fixed to the support part 19 and to the leaf frame 17 after mounting and adjustment, by means of the fixing screws 21. The leaf hinge part 2 is then covered over by a cover cap 23 of plastic material.
  • The adjustment part 20 of the leaf hinge part 2 also has a receiving bore 24 into which a fixing pin 25 integrally connected to the hinge pin 15 can be inserted. The fixing pin 25 can be arrested in various angular positions within the receiving bore 24. For that purpose, arranged in the receiving bore 24 (see Figure 2) and on the fixing pin 25 are complementary tooth configurations for holding the fixing pin 25 non-rotatably in the receiving bore 24. If required the fixing pin 25 can be withdrawn from the receiving bore 24 and turned with respect thereto. The fixing pin 25 is arranged eccentrically relative to the hinge pin 15 so that the spacing between the hinge axis of the hinge pin 15 and the plane of the door or window leaf or casement is adjustable by rotation of the fixing pin 25.
