Abstract

An adjustable door hinge for flush fitting doors has a hinge leaf which fits the edge surface of the door and which is adjustable to vary the spacing of the hinge leaf from the edge surface to facilitate the correct positioning of the door within a door frame. This adjustment is achieved in one embodiment by arranging the hinge leaf 13 to abut against a threaded sleeve 20 screwed into the edge surface of the door, the sleeve being adjustable by a tool engaging in a slot 22 in a screw 18 which engages a threaded bore 23 in the threaded sleeve 20 to vary the amount the sleeve projects from the edge surface of the door. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An adjustable door hinge The invention relates to a door hinge for mounting a flush fitting door to a door frame and having a first hinge part adapted to connect with the door frame and provided with at least one supporting pin, and having a second hinge part adapted to be connected to the door and provided with a hinge leaf and with adjustment means for varying the spacing between the second hinge part and the edge surface of the door.
For some time now doors which are flush fitting and which thus extend virtually flush with the outside of the door frame when closed have been used increasingly instead of the type of construction with an overlap which was normal previously. As with other door designs, a certain clearance must be provided between the door frame rabbet and the edge of the door. When differences in the clearance arise for example due to dropping, lifting, or when the door jams-the door itself had previously to be taken off its hinges, and the fittings had to be removed or replaced, or one of the edge surfaces of the door had to be planed off.
Although a door hinge is known from Swiss Patent Specification No. 610.051 where stepwise equalising can be effected by means of intermediate plates or shims of different thickness which can be pushed in from the outside, such equalising is much too imprecise and looks unsightly. In addition, production and mounting are complicated. The storing or production of different size intermediate plates for equalising is also burdensome, especially bearing in mind that some such intermediate plates may not be required for many years.
The invention is intended to solve the problem of providing a door hinge which is suitable for doors with flush closure, which, while avoiding the use of separate equalising plates or the like, will make fine adjustment of the positioning of the door relative to the surrounding frame possible both during mounting and also subsequently, in a simple manner.
According to the invention the door hinge leaf which projects from the second hinge part and is designed to face the edge surface of the door, rests against the end face of a threaded sleeve screwed into the edge surface of the door, or the head of a screw engaged in the threaded sleeve is secured on the door hinge leaf against axial displacement but is rotatable, and the threaded sleeve and/or said head are provided with means for locating a tool whereby said sleeve and/or said screw can be rotated to adjust the position of the door.
Thus, if the door jams in the frame or there is an unequal amount of clearance between the door and the frame, all that is required is to rotate the regulating device in order to produce the desired equalising. Commercially available tools are sufficient for this purpose.
This position correction may be undertaken without the change being visible afterwards from the outside.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section along the line I-I in Fig. 3 of a door frame and a door which are connected to each other by a first embodiment of door hinge.
Figure 2 is a view of the hinge mounting on the door, Figure 3 is a view of the mounted door hinge displaced through 90 as compared with Fig. 2, Figure 4 is a horizontal section of a second embodiment of hinge for mounting on a wooden frame, Figure 5 is a horizontal section of a third embodiment, Figure 6 is a view of the door hinge shown in Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrow E, Figure 7 is a view of the hinge part which is connected to the door of the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6, looking in the direc tion of the arrow F, Figure 8 shows a separate cover plate which can be placed on the door hinge leaf.
Figure 9 is a cross-section through the cover plate shown in Fig. 8, and Figure 10 is a horizontal section of a further embodiment of a mounted door hinge.
The door hinge 1 (also called a swing fitting) is used to connect a pivoting door 2 to a stationary door frame 3. The door frame 3 may be made of metal or wood and is let into a wall 4 or set in concrete. In Fig. 1 the door 2 is shown in its closed position and is a flush fitting door, its outer surface extending flush or almost flush with the corresponding outer surface of the frame 3. The door hinge 1 comprises a two-part first hinge part con nected to the frame 3 and having supporting pins 10 screwed into respective bearing blocks 11 which are welded onto the door frame 3 on the wall side. Each of the two bearing pins 10, which are disposed one above the other, is rigidly connected to a hinge tube 26 which serves to accommodate a pivot pin 7. Between these two hinge tubes 26 is located the hinge tube 25 of a second hinge part which is mounted on the door 2.
The second part comprises a hinge leaf 1 3 which is rigidly connected to or integrally formed with the hinge tube 25 and is cranked as can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The hinge leaf 1 3 is connected to the edge surface of the door by a screw 1 8. A seal 1 2 with flexible sealing flanges fits in a groove in the door frame and seals with the inner surface of the door 2.
To enable the positioning of the door 2 to be adjusted or corrected, the door hinge leaf 1 3 does not lie directly on the edge surface of the door, but is supported on the end surface 50 of a threaded sleeve 20. This threaded sleeve 20 is screwed via its external thread 24 into a bore 21 in the door 2. This bore 21 extends horizontally, preferably mid-way across and perpendicular to the edge surface of the door 2. The threaded sleeve 20 is provided in its central section with a guide bore which leads into a screw thread 23 which co-acts with the thread 27 on the screw 1 8. In order to facilitate the screwing of this threaded sleeve 20 into the door it is provided on its outer end face with a transversally extending slot 22 or an internal hexagonal socket for locating a tool, particularly a hexagonal key.
In the screwed-in state, therefore, the screw 1 8 passes through the door hinge leaf 1 3 and its head 1 7 is countersunk in the door hinge leaf 1 3. The end face 50 of the threaded sleeve 20 thus lies directly against the facing surface of the door hinge leaf 1 3. The door hinge leaf 13, which is circular over more than half its periphery, is partially recessed into the edge surface of the door. This recessing is formed with the aid of a shank cutter which engages in the previously-formed bore 21, and cuts out an appropriate amount of material from the edge surface of the door.
The removal of the small strip for locating the part of the door hinge leaf 1 3 which extends between its approximately circular periphery and the hinge tube 25 is effected in a separate operation after the recessing. Behind the surface of the door hinge leaf 1 3 adjacent the edge surface of the door 2 there remains a gap 14 which is used for varying the positioning of the door. So that this gap 14 is not visible from the outside of the door, the door hinge leaf 1 3 has an integrally formed covering strip 1 5 which covers this gap 14 on the outside, and which also effects the fixing of this hinge part against rotation relatively to the door.
During mounting, or if the position of the door should have changed somewhat in the course of time, correction of the door positioning can be effected smoothly in a simple manner by rotating the threaded sleeve 20 slightly further in or out, so that thereafter when the door hinge leaf 1 3 is fixed by the screw 1 8 the door takes up a corrected position. From the outside no change is visible since only the covered gap 14 becomes slightly larger or smaller. In order to prevent self-initiated loosening of the screw 1 8 a deformable plastic plug or the like may be inserted crosswise in the threaded area of the screw 18, for example, so that it is secured against rotation by increased friction.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 4 is particularly suitable for door frames made of wood.
In the door frame 1 6 a metal self-tapping pin 48 screwed into the surface which extends transversely to the plane of the door. For this purpose, a cylindrical bore is provided beforehand, and the self-tapping pin 48, equipped with an external thread 47, is screwed into this with the aid of a key inserted in an internal hexagonal opening 49. In this selftapping pin 48 is a transverse bore 45 into which the supporting pin 10 of the first hinge part, which is connected to the frame, is screwed. The construction of the door hinge leaf 1 3 connected to the door 2 corresponds substantially to the embodiment shown in Fig.
1, with the difference that instead of an integrally formed covering strip 1 5 there is a separate covering plate 32 with an angular cross-section, which is welded onto the door hinge leaf 1 3 or rigidly connected to it in some other way. This covering plate 32 serves to cover the gap 14, which can be of varying size according to the positioning of the door, and it also serves to secure the door hinge leaf 1 3 against rotation relatively to the door. The end face 50 of the threaded sleeve 20 rests directly on the covering plate 32 and its position axially is varied by varying its extension into the bore 21 by means of a tool locating in an internal hexagonal socket 51. In this way, correction of the positioning of the door can be achieved by screwing the threaded sleeve 20 in or out. After this, the screw 1 8 which is preferably provided with an internal hexagonal opening 1 9 is tightened. In other respects, the mounting operation corresponds to that described with reference to Fig.
1.
An embodiment is shown in Figs. 5 to 9 wherein the screw head 1 7 is mounted rotatably to the door hinge leaf. A sleeve 35 screwed into the door hinge leaf 1 3 via a thread 37 secures the screw head 1 7 against axial displacement, although it can be rotated easily. The external diameter of the sleeve 35 is chosen so that it can locate in the bore 21 in which the threaded sleeve 20 is screwed.
This provides additional lateral support for the relatively long screw 1 8 inserted in the threaded sleeve 20. The head 1 7 thus lies against a shoulder provided in the door hinge leaf 1 3 by a cylindrical recess in the sleeve 35, and the head 17, equipped with an internal hexagonal opening 19, passes through the door hinge leaf 1 3 so that the screw 1 8 can thus be adjusted by inserting a hexagonal key or the like from outside the door hinge. Rotation prevention means to prevent any undesired rotation can be provided in this case as well, for example, in the form of a deformable plastic plug inserted in a cross-bore in the threaded sleeve 20, and pressing on the thread on the screw 1 8.
When the screw 1 8 is rotated by screwing it in or out of the sleeve 20 to correct the positioning of the door, the sleeve 20 remains stationary in the door 2, and the two gaps 1 4 and 39 vary in size. The threaded sleeve 20 is initially inserted by means of a tool locating in its internal hexagonal opening 51 until the axial distance of the gap 39 is at least as large as that of the gap 14. Relative to the milled recess to accommodate the door hinge leaf, the threaded sleeve 20 is screwed more deeply into the bore 21.
Instead of a sleeve 35 having a thread 37, the screw head 1 7 could also be secured against axial displacement by a sleeve 35 riveted or screwed onto the door hinge leaf.
To cover the gap 1 4 n this instance a covering plate 32 is placed on the door hinge leaf 1 3. This is held fast by a clamping effect, possibly reinforced by welded or soldered points, with its projecting lugs 34 on the door hinge leaf 1 3. This makes production of the door hinge leaf 1 3 easier, and more especially it enables it to be produced as a stamped and bent part, since the covering plate 32 can be attached subsequently. On either side of the door hinge leaf 1 3 there is a notch which is used for holding the covering plate 32.
As can be seen in Fig. 7, the milled recess in the edge surface of the door is such that the distance between its centre axis and one face of the door is less than the length of the radius of the milled recess.
Below the part 5 of the hinge which comprises the door hinge leaf 1 3 there is the hinge part 6 with an upper hinge tube 26 and the supporting pin 10, and also a lower hinge tube 38 with a cylindrical support pin 40 (Fig.
6).
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10 there is again a threaded sleeve 20 which enables the distance between the door hinge leaf 1 3 and the door 2 to be adjusted. The end face 50 of this threaded sleeve 20 lies rotatably but virtually without clearance against the surface of the door hinge leaf 1 3 that faces the edge surface of the door. Relative rotation between the threaded sleeve 20 screwed into the edge surface of the door and the door hinge leaf 1 3 is therefore possible. A shank 1 8 having a counter-sink head 1 7 is inserted in the central bore of the sleeve 20 and is secured against rotation therein. This securement can be effected by a force fit of the shank 1 8 in the bore or by means of a transverse pin 30 or by providing the bore and the shank 1 8 with a cross-sectional shape which deviates from the circular shape. In the head 1 7 there is an internal hexagonal recess 1 9 for the introduction of a hexagonal key to rotate the head 1 7 together with the threaded sleeve 20.The construction is therefore designed so that the head 1 7 may be rotated easily in the complementary recess 33 from the outwardly facing surface of the door hinge leaf 1 3. Over its entire length the threaded sleeve 20 is preferably provided on the outside with a tapping thread 23, and during mounting it is screwed by means of a tool inserted in the hexagonal opening 1 9 into a threadless bore 21 made beforehand in the edge surface of the door. The door hinge leaf 1 3 which has a circular boundary over at least 3/4 of its periphery thus projects into an approximately cylindrical recess which has been made in the edge surface of the door 2 with the aid of a shank cutter.A gap 1 4 remains for adjustment, so that the positioning of the door 2 which is flush fitting when it' is closed can be corrected in a simple manner by screwing the threaded sleeve 20 in more or less deeply.
The production of this cylindrical recess for accommodating the door hinge leaf 1 3 is effected by providing first of all the bore 21 with the aid of a boring template, and then cutting out the recess to take the door hinge leaf 1 3. One or more rotation-prevention pins 36 arranged in a circle project out from the door hinge leaf 1 3 and serve to secure it against rotation.
The vertical pivot pin is spaced out laterally from the door hinge leaf 13, and in all the embodiments it is located at a distance from the frame 3 and from the adjacent face of the door, on the inner side of a room.
The different embodiments described can also be combined with each other insofar as this is rational and technically possible.
