  • glazing 10 is trapezoidal in shape; the distribution of heating lines 12 is such that they extend over most of the surface area of the glazing (over 90 % of the surface area), thereby enabling substantially the entire glazing to be heated, and not just a central rectangular portion as is common in many prior art, trapezoidal glazings that are heated with wires.
  • This distribution of heating lines 12 is achieved by the ensuring that the spacing between adjacent lines is constant in the central rectangular portion of the glazing, but increases from upper busbar 13a to lower busbar 13b on either side of the central rectangular portion, so that heating lines 12 effectively "fan out” as they approach the sides of glazing 10.
  • Such a distribution ensures that glazing 10 will be evenly heated (i.e. no hotspots will occur) when electrical power is supplied to busbars 13a, 13b.
  • laminated glazing 10 further comprises outer pane of glazing material 14 and inner pane of glazing material 15, each in the form of a ply of soda-lime-silica glass.

  • Figure 3 illustrates laminated glazing 30, again in the form of a vehicle windscreen, comprising an electrically conductive member 31 , in the form of a heating element.
  • Figure 3 is similar to Figure 1 in that electrically conductive member 31 is made up of a plurality of heating lines 32 and busbars 33a, 33b, all of which are formed as one continuous piece from a sheet of electrically conductive material. Again heating lines 32 are shown in greatly enlarged detail, and with fewer of them than would actually be present in such a glazing for clarity in the Figure.
  • Glazing 30 further comprises non- heated area 34, which is an area in electrically conductive member 3,1 that is devoid of heating lines 32.
  • thermoplastics which include a non-heated area, especially those having a conductive coating for the heating element
  • hotspots there is a tendency for hotspots to form around the non-heated area which is due to an increase in power density in this region.
  • the power density around non-heated area 34 is managed by altering the width of those heating lines 32 closest to it.
  • Figure 3 shows that these heating lines have an increased width in the vicinity of non- heated area 34,_ thus the power density is suitably controlled so that overall glazing 30 is evenly heated (and hotspots are avoided).
  • the power density is varied by altering the width of certain heating lines 32 (when they are at a constant thickness), it is instead possible to keep the width of all the heating lines the same and to vary the thickness of the relevant lines at the appropriate location along their lengths.
  • FIG 4 shows an alternative version of the glazing shown in Figure 3.
  • Laminated glazing 40 is very similar to laminated glazing 30 in that it is in the form of a vehicle windscreen and comprises an electrically conductive member 41, in the form of a heating element, which is made up of a plurality of heating lines 42 and busbars 43a, 43b. Glazing 40 also comprises non-heated area 44. However, instead of varying the width of heating lines 42 around non-heated area 44 to avoid the occurrence of hotspots (as is done with glazing 30 in Figure 3), electrically conductive member 41 includes heating line extension 45 (which is also formed as one continuous piece with heating lines 42 and busbars 43a, 43b from a sheet of electrically conductive material).
  • Heating line extension 45 joins those heating lines 42 that are close to non-heated area 44 to provide an electrical pathway around it. In doing so, this ensures that there is a permanent, easily accessible pathway around non-heated area 44 for electric current to follow, thus avoiding a build-up of power density around non-heated area 44.
  • Heating line extension 45 has an increased width compared to the width of heating lines 42, again so that the power density is controlled and the glazing 40 is evenly heated around non-heated area 44.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates laminated glazing 50, again in the form of a vehicle windscreen, which is similar to the laminated glazings of Figures 1 to 4 in that it comprises an electrically conductive member 5I 5 in the form of a heating element, which is made up of a plurality of heating lines 52 and busbars 53a, 53b.
  • the area of glazing 50 to be heated by electrically conductive member 51 is split into three distinct zones: two identical heating zones 54 in the centre of glazing 50, intermediate heating zone 55 which surrounds heating zones 54, and peripheral heating zone 56 (the boundaries of which are defined by busbars 53a, 53b and outermost heating lines 52) which surrounds intermediate heating zone 55.
  • Central heating zones 54 are designed to heat up more quickly than intermediate heating zone 55, which in turn is designed to heat up more quickly than peripheral heating zone 56.
  • each of these three heating zones corresponds to the vision zones of a windscreen defined in ECE R43.
  • FIG 6 shows electrically conductive member 51 and heating zones 54, 55, 56 of glazing 50 of Figure 5 in more detail. Only four heating lines 52 are shown in Figure 6 (labelled 52a, 52b, 52c and 52d) and in greatly enlarged detail so that the following description of the configuration of these lines may be appreciated.
  • Heating line 52b spans glazing 50 from upper busbar 53a to lower busbar 53b, passing through peripheral heating zone 56 and intermediate heating zone 55.
  • Heating lines 52a, 52c, 52d similarly span glazing 50 and each passes through all three heating zones 54, 55, 56.
  • central heating zones 54 are designed to heat up the fastest followed by intermediate heating zone 55 and finally peripheral heating zone 56.
  • central heating zone 54 > intermediate heating zone 55 > peripheral heating zone 56
  • width of heating lines 52a, 52b, 52c, 52d varies as follows: peripheral heating zone 56 > intermediate heating zone 55 > central heating zones 54.
  • heating line 52b has a first width as it extends from upper busbar 53a over peripheral zone 56, is reduced to a second width over intermediate zone 55, and then is increased back to the first width over peripheral zone 56 before merging with lower busbar 53b.
  • heating lines 52a, 52c, 52d have a first width as they extend from upper busbar 53a over peripheral zone 56, are reduced to a second width over intermediate zone 55, are further reduced to a third width over central zone 54, then increased back to the second width over intermediate zone 55, and then further increased back to the first width over peripheral zone 56 before merging with lower busbar 53b.
  • the power density is varied by altering the width of heating lines 52 (when they are at a constant thickness), it is instead possible to keep the width of all the heating lines the same and to vary the thickness of the relevant lines at the appropriate location along their lengths.
  • FIG. 7 depicts a modified version of glazing 50 shown in Figures 5 and 6.
  • the glazing in Figure 7 further includes heating zone 70.
  • Heating zone 70 corresponds to that part of a glazing conventionally referred to as a heated wiper rest area ("HWRA"), and is designed to heat up more quickly than any of heating zones 54, 55, 56.

  • Figure 8 illustrates laminated glazing 80, in the form of a vehicle sidelight, comprising an electrically conductive member 81, in the form of a heating element.
  • Electrically conductive member 81 is made up of a plurality of heating lines 82 and a pair of busbars 83a, 83b respectively, all of which are formed as one continuous piece from a sheet of electrically conductive material.
  • Heating lines 82 are shown in greatly enlarged detail, and with fewer of them than would actually be present in such a glazing for clarity in the Figure.
  • glazing 80 has an irregular shape; the distribution of heating lines 82 is such that they extend over most of the surface area of the glazing (over 90 % of the surface area), thereby enabling substantially the entire glazing to be heated. In addition, such a distribution ensures that glazing 80 will be evenly heated (i.e. no hotspots will occur) when electrical power is supplied to busbars 83a, 83b.
  • the power density can be varied either by altering the width of heating lines 82 (when they are at a constant thickness) or by keeping the width of heating lines 82 the same and varying the thickness of the lines at an appropriate location along their lengths.
  • the actual construction of glazing 80 is similar to that of glazing 10 described earlier, in that it comprises a composite interlayer (a ply of PET and two plies of PVB) which is interleaved between panes of soda-lime- silica glass.
  • FIG 9 shows an alternative version of the glazing shown in Figure 8.
  • Laminated glazing 90 is very similar to laminated glazing 80 in that it is in the form of a vehicle sidelight and comprises an electrically conductive member 91, in the form of a heating element, which is made up of a plurality of heating lines 92 and busbars 93a, 93b, 93c.
  • electrically conductive member 91 instead of having electrically conductive member 91 as one circuit (as is done with glazing 80 in Figure 8), it is instead divided into two heating circuits 94a, 94b - circuit 94a is powered by busbars 93a, 93c and circuit 94b is powered by busbars 93b, 93c.
  • the electrically conductive member which features in all of the glazings shown in Figures 1 through to 9 may be an etched sheet of copper foil, or other such suitable etched conductive medium, such as a foil of silver, gold, aluminium, an iron-nickel alloy or a steel. Etched conductive sheets are currently available from Scheuten Precision Technologies, Nusterweg 66, NL-6136 XB Sittard ⁇ Netherlands (website: www.mptec.biz).
