Abstract

Luggage of the pull-along type comprises a container, a sleeve fixed to the container, and a telescopic tube mounted in a sliding fashion in the sleeve between a retracted position, and a deployed position. The luggage further includes a resilient element interposed between the tube and the sleeve, designed to allow the tube to be pushed into the sleeve beyond the retracted position against a restoring force exerted on the tube by the resilient member.

Description

The invention relates to luggage, and more specifically towable luggage, commonly called trolleys ® .

Such luggage generally comprises a container, which forms the useful part of the luggage, a sheath fixed to the container, and a rod generally provided with a projecting handle and slidably mounted in the sheath between a retracted position, in which the cane is received in the sheath for carrying the baggage or its storage, and an extended position in which the rod extends cantilever relative to the sheath to facilitate the towing of the baggage.

Towable luggage with telescopic rods has been known for a long time. If the telescopic rod improves the ergonomics of luggage, it is not without posing some practical problems.

First, such a cane is relatively bulky. It has been proposed to make it disappear in the container (see for example the US patent application US 2002/0096410 ), but it then encroaches on the useful volume of the luggage.

Secondly, repeated use leads to the appearance of a game in the mechanism of the cane, which tends during sudden manipulations (for example in the airport environment) to come out of the sheath accidentally, which can cause its break in case of choc.

A titre d'illustration de ces propos, on pourra se référer aux brevets américains US 5 499 702 , US 5 653 319 , US 5 692 266 , US 5 884 362 et US 5 803 214 .It has therefore been proposed to make the snap-hook rod in the retracted position and to integrate it and its handle into the volume of the container: the rod is provided with a two-position lock, namely a locking position in which the latch locks the rod in the retracted position, and an unlock position in which he releases. A trigger, manually actuatable, causes the lock to be placed in its unlocked position, thereby freeing the rod that can be deployed to allow towing of the luggage. A trigger coupled to springs optionally allows the rod to jump out of its housing to facilitate its grip for towing. As an illustration of these remarks, we can refer to US patents US 5,499,702 , US 5,653,319 , US 5,692,266 , US 5,884,362 and US 5,803,214 .

These mechanisms appear, at first glance, to be an improvement in terms of the resistance of the luggage to shocks. In practice, it has been found that some rods have a tendency to crack or even break under certain consecutive shocks including the vertical fall of the luggage. It even happens that, in turn, the container is itself damaged by the movement of the cane. Indeed, the cane and its handle remain exposed to certain shocks, especially those transmitted from the handle to the cane, even in the retracted position.

This is even more true when the luggage is semi-rigid or flexible, because the container is more or less deformed under the action of mechanical stresses which exposes the cane and especially its handle, in case of shocks.

Thus, the cane and its handle remain exposed to certain shocks, which are likely to lead to malfunctions at the rod or at worst irreparable damage to the luggage.

The invention aims in particular to remedy this problem, by proposing a luggage of towable type, which is less sensitive to shocks than known baggage.

For this purpose, the proposed luggage, of the aforementioned type, comprises the features as defined in claim 1.

Thus, the rod retains in retracted position a certain stroke that allows it to sink under the effect of a particularly vertical shock, with a damping effect of shock provided by the elastic member. This results in better impact resistance of the cane (and therefore, more generally, luggage).

In the retracted position of the rod, the elastic member is preferably prestressed.

According to one embodiment, the elastic member comprises at least one compression spring, and preferably a pair of compression springs. The elastic member is for example mounted in a support fixed to the sheath.

According to one embodiment, the elastic member has a lower portion received in a housing formed in the support, and an upper portion protruding from the support and against which the cane is in abutment, the upper portion defining a clearance between the cane and the support. According to a first variant of this embodiment, it may be sufficient that the rod is in simple support on this upper portion. According to a second variant of this embodiment, the rod, in the retracted position, compresses the elastic member.

Furthermore, the cane may comprise snap-fastening means which ensure a retention of the rod in the retracted or deployed position. These latching means comprise for example a ball, mounted in the rod, biased by a spring and adapted to cooperate with a hole in the sleeve.

More specifically, the rod may comprise an outer tube slidably mounted in the sleeve, and an inner tube slidably mounted in the outer tube, the outer tube comprising a ball biased by a spring and adapted to cooperate with a hole in the sleeve, the inner tube comprising a ball biased by a spring and adapted to cooperate with a hole in the outer tube.

The container may be made of a flexible or semi-rigid material.

On the figure 1 is represented a luggage 1 towable type, commonly called trolley ® . This luggage 1 comprises a container 2 (shown in dashed lines) of flexible, semi-rigid or rigid material, which constitutes the body of the luggage 1, mounted and fixed on a frame 3 in the form of a devil.

The chassis 3 comprises a monobloc plate 4 having a base 5 on which the container 2 rests, extended by a rear flange 6 in the extension of which protrude two reinforcements 7 which is fixed the container 2. The base 5 and the flange 6 are connected on each side by two sidewalls 8 which form wheel wells ( not represented).

As can be seen in particular on figures 1 and 5 the luggage 1 is furthermore equipped with a telescopic rod 9 having a protruding handle and slidably mounted relative to the frame 3. The telescopic rod 9 may be made in one piece or in several pieces sliding one in the other, as shown in the drawings.

More specifically, the frame 3 comprises a sleeve 10 which protrudes from the rear flange 6, substantially perpendicularly to the base 5. This sleeve 10, which extends over most of the height of the container 2, is fixed to it by being received in a recess (not shown) formed in a rear wall 11 of the container 2.

The sheath 10 comprises a tubular inner sheath 12, metal, in which the rod 9 is slidably mounted between two positions, namely:
  • a retracted position, in which the cane 9 is received in the sheath 10 ( figures 2 , 3 ), and
  • an extended position in which the rod 9 extends at least partially outside the sheath 10, cantilevered relative thereto ( figures 5 , 6 ).

As is visible on the figures 1 , 2 and 5 , the rod 9 comprises a hollow outer tube 13, received in the sheath 12 being slidably mounted relative thereto, and an inner tube 14, also hollow, received in the outer tube 13 being slidably mounted relative to that -this.

At a lower end 15, the outer tube 13 is integral with an insert 16 fitted with a bore 17 blind in which is received a compression spring 18 which urges a ball 19 towards the sheath 12. In the retracted and deployed positions of the rod 9, the ball 19 is partially received in a hole 20 (respectively 20 '), d a diameter smaller than that of the ball 19, made in the sheath 12 to ensure the retention of the outer tube 13 (in retracted position, Cf. figure 3 , respectively deployed, Cf. figure 8 ).

In the positions retracted and deployed from the rod 9, the ball 25 is partially received in a hole 26 (26 'respectively), of a diameter smaller than that of the ball 25, formed in the outer tube 13 to ensure the retention of the inner tube 14 (in the retracted position, cf. figure 3 , respectively deployed, Cf. figure 7 ).

As is clearly visible on the figure 3 , the bores 17, 23 are oriented opposite each other, so as to allow a relative balancing of the internal forces exerted on the rod 9.

The rod 9 ends, at an upper end 27, by an annular handle 28 nested in the inner tube 14 and permanently attached thereto.

Moreover, as can be seen in particular in figures 2 , 3 and 4 the luggage 1 further comprises an elastic member 29, interposed between the rod 9 and the sleeve 10, and which, in the retracted position of the rod 9, exerts thereon a restoring force which urges it towards its deployed position.

According to one embodiment, and as shown in figures 3 and 4 the elastic member 29 comprises at least one compression spring. In this case, two Compression springs 29 are provided parallel, mounted in a common support reported, fixed (for example by means of a screw 31) to the sheath 10 at the bottom thereof.

In the retracted position of the rod 9, the balls 19, 25 are snapped into their respective holes 20, 26. The rod 9 exerts on the springs 29 a force which tends to compress them beyond their equilibrium position, the restoring force of the springs 29 thus prestressed not being sufficient to dislodge the balls 19, 25 from their respective holes. .

Each spring 29 has a lower portion 32 received in a complementary cylindrical housing 33 which provides both the abutment (or the hooking) and the guide of the spring 29. As can be seen on the figures 3 and 4 each spring 29 has an upper portion 34 which protrudes from an upper face 35 of the support 30 (on the side of which the housings 33 open) and ends with an upper end 36 against which the rod 9, via a lower face 37 of the insert 16 is in simple support.

In this way, the springs 29 define, in the retracted position of the rod 9, a clearance J between the latter and the support 30 (more exactly between the lower face 37 of the insert 16 and the upper face 35 of the support 30) , this game allowing the depression of the rod 9 in the sleeve 10 beyond its retracted position (as shown in dotted lines on the figure 3 ), against the return force of the springs 29.

In this way, the rod 9, in its retracted position, undergoes, via the handle 28, a force (for example following a shock) directed in particular parallel to its direction of sliding and in the direction of its retraction, the game J arranged by the springs 29 allow it to sink elastically. The cane 9 then finds, thanks to the springs 29, its retracted position as soon as this effort disappears.

The springs 29 therefore have a cushioning function of the shocks suffered by the rod 9, which minimizes both the risk of damage (or even rupture) thereof and the impact of the shocks to the luggage 1 as a whole (for the benefit of the integrity of the goods he transports).
