Definitions

  • the present invention relates to earphones and in particular headband less earphones.
  • Wireless headphones are becoming more and more commonplace even in connection with mobile devices. Therefore, the corded headphones are being replaced by wireless headphones which typically use the bluetooth technology to transmit the audio signals to be reproduced to a wireless receiver in the headphone.
  • wireless headsets have become increasingly popular especially with mobile phones.
  • the communication between the mobile phone and a wireless headset is typically performed based on the bluetooth technology.
  • wireless headphones are often considered as being too bulky, typical wireless headsets for mobile phones merely have one earphone.
  • an earphone (in particular a headbandless earphone) is provided.
  • the earphone comprises a wireless receiver for wirelessly receiving a first audio signal to be reproduced by the earphone.
  • the earphone furthermore comprises a first electroacoustic transducer for reproducing part of the first audio signal and a second transmitter for wirelessly transmitting a second audio signal.
  • the second audio signal is derived from the first audio signal.
  • the audio signal (the first signal) which is to be reproduced on the earphone/headphone is transmitted via a first wireless protocol. Accordingly, the first headphone can transmit the second signal irrespective of the first audio signal.
  • the first headphone can wirelessly transmit an audio signal to a second headphone such that the user of the first headphone can use two headphones for a stereo reproduction of the audio signal.
  • Fig. 1 shows a basic representation of the environment of an earphone according to the first embodiment.
  • a first transmitter TX1 wirelessly transmits a first audio signal via a first link L1 to a first earphone E1.
  • the first earphone E1 receives the wirelessly transmitted first audio signal via its first receiver RX1 and transmits a part of the received audio signal or a signal derived from the first audio signal (second audio signal) by means of a second transmitter TX2 via a second link L2 wirelessly to a second earphone E2, Part of the audio signal or a signal derived from the audio signal is reproduced by a first electroacoustic transducer ET1.
  • the second earphone comprises a second receiver RX2, which receives the wirelessly transmitted second audio signal from the first earphone E1.
  • the second audio signal is reproduced by a second electroacoustic transducer ET2.
  • the first earphone may be the left earphone, while the second earphone may correspond to a right earphone. Accordingly, the first earphone E1 (the left earphone) may transmit the audio signal for the right earphone (E2) via the second link such that a stereo reproduction of the received audio signal is possible. Accordingly, the first earphone receives the audio signal via the first link L1, determines the signal which is necessary for the reproduction of the right channel, for example for a stereo reproduction, and transmits the required signal to the second earphone.
  • Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of an earphone of Fig. 1 according to a second embodiment.
  • the first earphone E1 comprises a first receiver RX1 for wirelessly receiving a first audio signal AS1 via a first link L1.
  • a second transmitter TX2 is furthermore provided for wirelessly transmitting a second audio signal from the first earphone E1 for example to a second earphone E2.
  • the second audio signal AS2 is part of, contained in, decoded in or derived from the first audio signal AS1 received via the first link L1.
  • the first earphone E1 comprises an acoustic transducer AT for reproducing the first audio signal or at least parts thereof
  • the first earphone E1 may comprise an audio decoder AD, a memory MEM, a microphone MIC and an active noise reduction unit ANR.
  • the audio decoder AD may receive the first audio signal AS1 from the first receiver RX and may decode the first audio signal AS1.
  • the decoding performed by the audio decoder AD may be based on a MP3 decoding, a MPEG4 decoding or any other audio decoding.
  • the audio decoder AD may also decode audio signals stored in the memory MEM.
  • the memory MEM may be implemented as a semiconductor memory arranged in the first earphone E1. Alternatively, the memory MEM may be implemented as a slot for inserting memory cards.
  • the microphone MIC in connection with the active noise reduction unit ANR may be used to perform an active noise reduction.
  • the microphone MIC may also be used to detect an audio signal from the user of the earphone and to forward this recorded audio signal to a third transmitter TX3 which may wirelessly transmit this audio signal to a further receiver arranged in the environment of the earphones.
  • the first receiver RX1 is implemented as a receiver which is capable to receive a stereo or a multi-channel audio signal.
  • the first receiver RX1 and the second transmitter TX2 are implemented in one single earphone E1, in particular in a single housing.
  • the second transmitter TX2 is used to merely transmit those signals to the second earphone E2 which are actually required by the second earphone E2.
  • the transmitter TX2 merely needs to transmit a signal over the short distance of approximately 20 cm.
  • the second transmitter TX2 may use the usual high frequency ranges, like Bluetooth, WLAN, HomeRF or the like.
  • the second transmitter TX2 may also use the specific 176 MHz band for hearing aid devices.
  • the second transmitter TX2 may also use a transmission in the frequency range below 500 kHz.
  • the housing of the first earphone E1 comprises a mechanical retainer for the second earphone E2.
  • this retainer may also comprise a charging terminal for charging the battery of the second earphone E2.
  • the second earphone can be hooked into the first earphone. Such a situation may arise if the user is driving a car or a bicycle. However, if the user wants to use both earphones, the second earphone may be taken from the retainer in the first earphone and placed over the other ear of the user.
  • the first earphone may comprise a detecting unit for detecting whether the second earphone E2 is hooked into the first earphone or not. If the second earphone E2 is not hooked into the first earphone, then the second transmitter TX2 is activated to transmit the second audio signal to the second earphone via the second link L2.
  • a cable connection is present between the first and second earphone E1, E2.
  • the second earphone E2 may be implemented as a passive earphone.
  • a plug is present between the first and second earphone,
  • the cable connection may be rolled up.
  • the above-mentioned earphones are preferably implemented as in-ear phones.
  • the first receiver RX1 and the second transmitter TX2 are not arranged in an earphone but are arranged in an extra housing which is detached from the earphone,
  • the first receiver RX1 and the second transmitter TX2 are arranged in or as a separate box.
  • This box could be implemented as a transponder which could be attached to a belt of a user or it could be arranged in a shirt pocket of a user.
  • a first earphone E1 will comprise a third receiver and a third transmitter as well as a first electroacoustic transducer.
  • the third receiver will receive an audio signal from the second transmitter TX2 and will transmit a fourth audio signal from the third transmitter to a second receiver in a second earphone E2.
  • the difference between this embodiment and the first embodiment is that the first receiver RX1 and the second transmitter TX2 are arranged outside or detached from the earphone.
  • the range of the transponder i.e. the range of the second transmitter, is smaller than 3m.
  • a receiver unit which comprises a first receiver and a second transmitter TX2.
  • the first receiver RX1 is preferably adapted to receive audio signals from external transmitters TX1 which may optionally be able to transmit the audio signals based on a high power.
  • the second transmitter TX2 is adapted to transmit the second audio signal based on low power.
  • a microphone M may be provided which can be adapted to record audio signals from a user.
  • the microphone may comprise a fifth transmitter TX5 for transmitting the recorded audio signal to the receiver unit.
  • the receiver unit may furthermore comprise a sixth transmitter for transmitting the received audio signal to the first transmitter TX1.
