Definitions

  • This invention relates to improvements in or relating to handling and is more particularly concerned with improvements in or relating to the handling and stripping of paper reel ends.
  • the loose ends of the paper hang down from the reels and are automatically pulled from the reel ends by the movement of carrying paper drawn from large carrier rolls.
  • the apparatus has a large carrier roll of paper mounted at each end of the row of central support rods. Paper from the first (rear or upstream) carrier roll has to be fed in turn over and under consecutive additional rollers located below the level of the central support rods. Paper from the first carrier roll is drawn through the apparatus under power and pulls the paper from the reel ends with it (on top of the carrier paper) over and under said additional rollers as the carrier paper is drawn through the apparatus. Paper from the second carrier roll is drawn off by the same power source as the first carrier roll but this time the paper from the second carrier roll is wound around a forward additional roller to lie on top of the paper being drawn from the reel ends.
  • the paper from the reel ends is tautly or tightly sandwiched in between the lengths of paper being drawn off the carrier rolls before being conveyed to a bailing machine.
  • Each paper reel end has to be individually mounted and secured to the central support rod, which operation tends to be inconvenient and time consuming.
  • carrier rolls of paper are required to strip the reel ends, which carrier roll may have to be replaced often (sometimes virtually on a daily basis) making the process relatively expensive and much more expensive than need be the case.
  • US 4 298 173 A discloses a single paper reel end stripping apparatus wherein a single paper reel is pushed against a stop device by conveyor belt means and rotated.
  • apparatus for paper reel end stripping comprising a conveyor belt means and a plurality of support rollers spaced apart from one another along the length of the conveyor belt means and arranged transversely of and just above the conveyor belt means, the arrangement being such that a plurality of paper reel ends can be introduced freely onto the conveyor belt means whereby, in use, the paper reel ends are automatically brought into contact with an associated forward support roller by the conveyor belt means and stripped simultaneously.
  • a plurality of paper reel ends can be introduced freely onto the paper reel end stripping apparatus, automatically brought into contact with an associated support roller and stripped simultaneously thereby saving a considerable amount of time. After stripping, the cores can be easily removed by hand from the conveyor belt means for re-use.
  • a method of stripping paper or other material from a core comprising introducing a plurality of cores with said paper or other material freely or loosely onto conveyor or conveyor belt means and automatically bringing the paper reel ends into contact with an associated forward support roller of a plurality of support rollers arranged transversely of and just above the conveyor or conveyor belt means, preferably by the conveyor or conveyor belt means, and stripping the paper or other material from the cores substantially simultaneously.
  • paper reel ends may be brought into contact with an associated forward roller by any suitable means.
  • the support rollers will be parallel to one another and located just above an upper surface of the conveyor belt means and preferably equidistant from one another along the conveyor belt means.
  • Lateral guide means preferably in the form of elongate side members, may be provided for ensuring that the paper reel ends do not fall off the conveyor belt means.
  • the support rollers are freely rotatable by the paper reel ends, in use.
  • space may be provided on the apparatus for several paper end reels to be positioned in between pairs of support rollers for stripping, such that some reel ends contact another, more forward reel end during stripping, rather than contacting a forward support roller.
  • support means e.g. a trough
  • the support means may be connected to a pivotable arm or mechanism that allows the support means to pivot (preferably rearwardly and/or under spring means or biassing such as a gas strut) so that the paper reel ends can be more easily transferred onto the conveyor belt means, by pivoting the arm.
  • the apparatus may be capable of stripping sixty paper reel ends substantially simultaneously.
  • paper reel end stripping apparatus 1 has a support framework 2 for an endless loop conveyor belt means 3.
  • the support framework 2 includes lateral guide means in the form of elongate side members 2a, 2b (see FIGURE 3 ) and five equidistantly spaced upright members 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f, 2g on member 2a and five similarly equidistantly spaced, opposing upright members 2h, 2i, 2j, 2k, 21 on member 2b.
  • the stripping apparatus 1 includes five support rollers R mounted transversely of and just above the conveyor belt means 3 in between opposite pairs of the upright members 2c, 2h; 2d, 2i; 2e, 2j; 2f, 2i; 2g, 2k.
  • the rollers R are freely rotatable about their axes on contact with paper reel ends E (see FIGURES 3 & 4 ) being rotated by the conveyor belt means 3 in a manner to be described.
  • Each upright member 2c - 21 is provided with a generally V-shaped notch n that receives one end of a trough 4 (generally v-shaped in cross-section) on which a paper reel end E can rest prior to being transferred onto the conveyor belt means 3.
  • a trough 4 generally v-shaped in cross-section
  • the troughs 4 are arranged to be pivotable rearwardly for easy transfer of the paper reel ends E onto the conveyor belt means 3.
  • the paper reel ends E are prevented from falling laterally off the conveyor belt means 3 by the elongate side members 2a, 2b extending above the upper level of the conveyor belt means 3 in which the paper reel ends rest, in use, during stripping.
  • Paper reel ends E can be introduced on to the apparatus 1 laterally of the apparatus and can be simply thrown haphazardly on to the conveyor belt means 3. Of course the paper reel ends always need to be positioned so that paper can be unwound from the paper reel ends as they are rotated anti-clockwise by the conveyor belt means.
  • rollers R in conjunction with side members 2a, 2b act to bring the paper reel ends into correct position on the apparatus and on the conveyor belt means 3 to automatically strip the remaining paper from the paper reel ends E, while being supported by the support rollers R in a manner which should be self evident from the drawings.
  • Any paper reel end E introduced onto the conveyor belt means will be moved forwardly by the conveyor belt means 2 to contact the forward roller R immediately in front of that paper reel end.
  • the roller R acts to support the paper reel end E in position (it is rotated in the opposite direction to the paper reel end i.e. clockwise) as the conveyor belt means 3 pulls off the paper smoothly from the bottom of the paper reel end E.
  • the roller R rotates in the opposite direction to the paper reel end as dictated by the speed of rotation of the paper reel end, so that the paper is smoothly stripped from the paper reel end.
  • a plurality of paper reel ends E can be introduced on to the apparatus 1 in between respective pairs of rollers R so that some of the reel ends may contact a rotating reel end rather than a roller R, during stripping.
  • FIGURE 5 shows a partial side view of a production version of paper reel end stripping apparatus 100 having wider, more flattened troughs 104 (located at the top and rearward of upright members X) for receiving the paper reel ends, said troughs being pivotable rearwardly to drop the paper reel ends onto the conveyor belt means 103, when required.
  • the troughs could be arranged to be pivoted in unison, manually or automatically and possibly against spring biasing means (provided e.g. by a gas strut).
  • FIGURES 6 to 10 show views of a final production embodiment of the paper reel end stripping apparatus 500.
  • Stripping apparatus 500 is similar to apparatus 100 except that troughs 104 have been dispensed with.
  • each roller R is releasably pivotally mounted to rotate about its own axis on contact with a paper reel end E.
  • FIGURE 9 shows how central shaft 501 of a roller R is positioned in a vertical slot 502 in right angled upright member 503 which receives an end nut 504. In use, the rollers R can rotate about shafts 501.
  • FIGURE 6 shows one of the rollers R (thirty six in all) removed form upright members 503' and paper reel end E' being stripped by contacting reel end E" in turn in contact with roller R.
  • reel ends can be stripped by contact with each other as long as one reel end is in contact with a roller R.
  • the conveyor belt 504 carries the stripped paper towards the far end of the apparatus 500 (see FIGURE 10 ) underneath a flattening or alignment means in the form of surface-textured roller 505 to prevent twisting of the stripped paper prior to the paper being carried away generally transversely of the apparatus down a chute by a conveyor belt (not shown) moving at right angles to the apparatus 500.
  • any range mentioned herein for any parameter or variable shall be taken to include a disclosure of any derivable sub-range within that range or of any particular value of the variable or parameter arranged within, or at an end of, the range or sub-range.
  • the word 'forward' as used in this specification means generally in the direction of travel of the end reels on the conveyor belt means or the general direction of movement of the upper surface of the conveyor belt means.
  • apparatus for stripping a plurality of paper reel ends (substantially) simultaneously, in use, with the paper reel ends being introducible freely onto conveyor means of the apparatus or without cores of the paper reel ends being mounted for rotation on central support rods.
  • means other than a forward roller may be provided for stripping the paper reel ends.
