Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of laser marking. It relates more specifically to a method of laser marking a material transparent to the wavelength of the laser.
- the Nd: YAG laser which has a small footprint and a relatively modest cost, is widely used. Its wavelength of 1064nm makes it possible to mark absorbent materials in the infra-red such as metals and certain plastics or ceramics. However, there is a range of transparent materials at 1064nm, for which the use of the Nd: YAG laser at this wavelength is impossible.
- One solution for these materials is to use a frequency multiplier to obtain radiation at 355 nm, that is to say in the ultraviolet. This solution is however expensive, bulky and unfavorable from the energy point of view. For this reason, it is best to avoid it.
- Plexiglas or PMMA of the English Poly MethylMethAcrylate, is such a material. Transparent in the visible, it has good mechanical properties, so it is often used as a replacement for glass, for many applications.
- Plexiglas being weakly absorbing at 1064nm several solutions already exist to mark it.
- the marking at 355 nm suffers from the disadvantages mentioned.
- Another method is to introduce into the mass of the plexiglass photosensitive pigments at 1064 nm. This solution, however, increases the cost of manufacturing plexiglass.
- mechanical engraving by milling is long and poorly suited to serial marking.
- the installation shown in FIG. 1 comprises a laser 10 of the Nd: YAG type emitting radiation at 1064 nm.
- the laser 10 could be a CO2 laser emitting far-infrared radiation at 10 microns.
- a support 12, consisting of a flat plate having a neat surface state, is disposed in the path of the laser radiation.
- the support 12 is made of metal, such as brass or aluminum, or any other material capable of strongly absorbing the light radiation emitted by the laser and transforming it into thermal energy.
- An article 14 intended to be marked is disposed in contact with the support 12, between the support 12 and the laser 10.
- the article 14 is a solid plexiglass flat plate used as a support, for example.
- article 14 could be made of any other plastic material transparent to the wavelength of 1064 nm, for example polycarbonate or nylon.
- Article 14 could also have a form that is not flat but of any kind.
- the thermal contact between the support 12 and the article 14 must be as good as possible, for reasons which will appear later.
- the support 12 In the case of a non-flat article 14, the support 12 must be adapted to the shape thereof, so as to optimize the thermal contact between the two elements.
- the laser 10 emits radiation in the form of a beam 16 of wavelength 1064 nm in the direction of the article 14.
- the beam 16 passes through the plexiglass plate 14 with little or no absorption.
- the beam 16 strikes the support 12 on a surface of the order of 2.10 -9 m 2 .
- the support 12 absorbs the radiation and transforms it into thermal energy. It then heats locally up to a temperature of the order of a few tens to a few hundred degrees Celsius.
- the thermal energy is transferred at least partially to Article 14.
- the plexiglass is transformed locally chemically, for example by carbonization, or physically, for example by melting. Both types of transformations can occur simultaneously.
- the plexiglass surface thus transformed presents a contrast with the untreated surface, this contrast giving rise to the marking of the plexiglass.
- the scanning by the laser beam 16 of a given zone allows the marking of a bar code, a logo, an image or any other inscription.
