Definitions
- the present invention relates to a bottom plate that can be placed beneath the cover plate of a door lock, window catch or similar.
- a door lock, or a window lock or catch mounted in a window frame is opened and closed using a handle.
- the mounting hole through which the handle is linked to the lock/catch mechanism is covered by a cover plate.
- the diameter of the hole is normally 40 mm.
- the cover plate is usually attached to another cover plate on the opposite side of the door or similar mounting base using fixing screws. In other words, cover plates on opposite sides are torqued against the mounting base using fixing screws. No handle will necessarily be installed on the opposite side; in that case, there is only a cover plate.
- Another alternative is to attach the cover plates to the lock or catch body using fixing screws. In such an installation, a single mounting hole is used for both the spindle of the handle and the fixing screws for the cover plate.
- the objective of the invention is to eliminate the described problem, which par ⁇ ticularly affects the single-hole method of mounting.
- the objective will be achieved as described in the independent claim.
- the dependent claims describe different em ⁇ bodiments for achieving the invention.
- the bottom plate itself includes gripping means that provide lateral attachment to the edge of the mounting hole. This engagement will prevent lateral movement of the bottom plate mounted on the mounting base.
- the gripping means comprise at least one grip surface that has a dimension parallel to any diameter of the bottom plate and a dimension parallel to the height of the bottom plate, forming a bevel contact against the edge of the mounting hole and making installation possible within a certain mounting hole diameter range.
- the gripping means are also flexible in the direction of the bottom plate height, making it possible to mount the bottom plate on the very surface of the mounting base.
- Figure 1 illustrates an example of a bottom plate according to the invention viewed from the reverse side
- Figure 2 illustrates an example of a bottom plate according to the invention viewed from the front
- Figure 3 illustrates an example of a bottom plate according to the invention viewed from the side
- Figure 4 illustrates the cross section of an embodiment of a bottom plate according to the invention
- Figure 5 illustrates the cross section of another embodiment of a bottom plate according to the invention.
- Figure 6 illustrates the cross section of yet another embodiment of a bottom plate according to the invention.
- Figure 1 illustrates an embodiment of a bottom plate 1 according to the invention viewed from the reverse side.
- Figure 2 illustrates the same embodiment viewed from the front, while Figure 3 illustrates it viewed from the side.
- the reverse side of the bottom plate refers to the side that upon installation sets against the surface of the mounting base and the mounting hole.
- the front refers to the side of the bottom plate on which the cover plate will be mounted.
- FIG. 16 There is a hole 3 in the centre of the bottom plate for the spindle to be installed through the bottom plate.
- the sides of the bottom plate preferably have relievers 5 to increase engagement onto the cover plate mounted on the bottom plate.
- the gripping means 6 are placed in these holes 2 so that they are in contact with the edge of the hole that is towards the centre point of the bottom plate.
- a gap 10 remains between the other edges of the hole and the gripping means.
- the bottom plate also has holes 4 for fasteners, which are normally fixing screws.
- the figures illustrate projecting parts on the rear surface of the bottom plate close to the centre hole, forming support for spring seating that may be installed.
- Each gripping means 6 in the Figures 1 to 3 comprises a flexible attaching part 8 through which the gripping means is in contact with the body of the bottom plate.
- the attaching part is a thin strip of material, and the part 7 formed by the grip surface 9 of the gripping means is thicker than the attaching part.
- the grip surface 9 has a dimension parallel to any diameter of the bottom plate D and a dimension parallel to the height of the bottom plate H.
- the grip surface 9 is a bevel surface, the end towards the bottom plate being farther away from the axis of the centre point of the bottom plate than the other end of the bevel surface, which extends away from the rear surface of the bottom plate.
- the part 7 formed by the grip surface 7 is a projecting part on the rear surface of the bottom plate.
- the grip surface is directed away from the centre of the bottom plate.
- the described dimensions of the grip surface make it possible for the bottom plate to grip onto holes of different sizes within the limits allowed by the dimensions D of the grip surfaces.
- the engagement features of the bottom plate can be affected by altering the dimensions D and H.
- the fact that the gripping means are flexible in the direction of the bottom plate's height (dimension H) allows the bottom plate to be placed on the very surface of the mounting base. This makes the outer part 11 of the bottom plate's rear surface set against the surface of the mounting base.
- Figure 4 illustrates the cross section of an embodiment of the invention according to Figures 1 to 3.
- the attaching part 8 provides good lateral support - that is, support in the direction of the mounting base surface.
- Figure 5 illustrates the cross section of another embodiment of a bottom plate according to the invention where the gripping means 12 are in contact with the edge of the hole towards the side plate of the bottom plate 13. Also in this embodiment, the attaching part 14 forms lateral support but this is not as good as the support provided by the attaching part in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 4.
- Figure 6 illustrates the cross section of yet another embodiment of the invention.
- the cavities 16 on the rear surface of the bottom plate 15 do not penetrate the bottom plate.
- the attaching part 18 of the gripping means 17 is in contact with the bottom of the cavity 16.
- the lateral support provided by the attaching part 18 is not comparable to the embodiments in Figures 4 and 5.
- the embodiments in Figures 4 to 6 can also be combined.
- the holes in Figures 4 and 5 may be cavities similar to those in Figure 6.
- the gripping means may be in contact with any edge or the bottom of a cavity on the rear surface. Any individual cavity may penetrate the bottom plate.
- the bottom plate may have one or more cavities for gripping means.
- the cavities or some of them may penetrate the bottom plate.
- An individual cavity on the rear surface forms a circumference around the centre point of the bottom plate, creating grip surfaces in different directions to prevent lateral movement.
- the circumference can be either closed or partially open at a certain point. If the circumference is fully closed, the cavity may not penetrate the bottom plate.
- the shape of the cavity forming a circumference preferably follows the shape of the bottom plate, such as a circle, rectangle, etc.
- One embodiment has two semi-circular cavities located on opposite sides relative to the centre point of the bottom plate. It is important that any gripping means placed in the cavity or cavities form grip surfaces in at least three directions viewed from the centre point of the bottom plate. If the intention is to use adhesive or a similar substance between the bottom plate and the cover plate, no cavities are necessary on the rear surface of the bottom plate, because the gripping means can be on the side plate of the bottom plate.
- Figures 1 and 2 illustrate an embodiment with four holes for fasteners.
- the number of holes for fasteners may also be different. At least one hole is necessary.
- the centre hole of the bottom plate preferably functions as a hole for a fastener. It is also possible that the bottom plate has no centre hole in in ⁇ stallations where the only purpose of the cover plate is to cover the mounting hole.
- the gripping means are also possible. Flexibility of the gripping means can be achieved, for example, by an arrangement in which the entire gripping means are flexible in the direction of the bottom plate's height - that is, no separate section more flexible than the others has been arranged in the gripping means.
- the gripping means may be formed, for example, of a strip of material having even thickness, one side of which will provide a grip surface, or the end of which has been bevelled to provide a grip surface. However, a particular flexible section within the gripping means is preferred. In other words, there are many alternatives for the design of the gripping means. If the design of the gripping means is suitably matched to the body of the bottom plate, no separate cavities will be required for the gripping means. However, cavities are preferred in terms of manufacturing technique. It is also preferred that the grip surface is splined.
- the gripping means are preferably of the same material as the bottom plate body.
