Definitions
- the current invention relates to a container comprising a bottom, a sidewall, and a handle connected to the container in such a way that it is pivotable about an axis A.
- the container is furthermore formed such that the centre of gravity of the container is, during normal use of the container, arranged essentially on a vertical plane P 1 which contains the axis A.
- Containers of this kind are used for many different purposes.
- a typical example is a container for transporting paint.
- An example of such a container is described in US 4,997,098 .
- Containers of this kind are symmetrical about the pivot axis of the handle. In this way, the container hangs balanced about the handle when being carried.
- larger containers of this kind are difficult to carry in that the person carrying the container needs to hold the container away from his or her legs while walking.
- a first aspect of the current invention is to provide a container as mentioned in the opening paragraph which is easy to carry.
- the maximum distance, perpendicular to the plane P 1 , between the plane P 1 and the inside surface of said sidewall on a first side of the plane P 1 is smaller than the maximal distance, perpendicular to the plane P 1 , between the plane P 1 and the inside surface of said sidewall on the other side of the plane P 1 .
- the sidewall on the first side of the plane P1 can have a portion which is essentially straight and essentially parallel to the plane P 1 . This helps with carrying the container, since the portion of the sidewall which is essentially flat can be held against the body of the user. The flat side furthermore, doesn't "catch" the legs of a user when the user moves his or her legs back and forth along the side of the container.
- the flat side can also be used to remove excess paint from a roller by rolling the roller up and down the inside surface of the flat side.
- the inside surface of the flat side could furthermore be formed with protrusions which also help in removing excess paint from a roller.
- the maximum distance parallel to the axis A between opposite points on the periphery of the upper edge of said sidewall on the first side of the plane P 1 can be made larger than the distance between the connection points between the container and the handle.
- the handle can be prevented from rotating more than a limited amount from the upright position of the handle to the first side of the plane P 1 . Therefore, it is ensured that the handle will always either be essentially upright or resting against the side of the container on the second side of the plane P 1 . This makes it easier for the user to find the handle.
- two containers can be stacked back to back.
- the container can be essentially symmetrical about a plane P 2 which is perpendicular to the plane P 1 . This will result in a well balanced container.
- the curvature of the horizontal contour lines of the sidewall can maintain essentially the same sign over their entire circumference. In this way, it is easy to manufacture the container. In addition, since the curvature does not change sign, it is easy to remove a lid which is placed on the container. Furthermore, no small corners are formed which are hard to clean.
- the maximum distance, perpendicular to the plane P 1 , between the plane P 1 and the inside surface of said sidewall on the first side of the plane P 1 could be located on a plane P 3 which is perpendicular to the plane P 1 and which essentially passes through the centre of gravity of the container.
- the middle portion of the container, or the portion of the container around the centre of gravity of the container is the widest portion of the container.
- the upper edge of said sidewall of said container can comprise lid connecting means for detachably connecting a lid to the container.
- the contents of the container can be protected against contamination.
- the contents of the container can be prevented from pouring out of the container.
- the container of the current invention could furthermore also be used as one component of a package comprising both a container and a lid.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container according to the invention.
- Figure 2 is a top view of the container shown in figure 1.
- Figure 3 is a side view of the container shown in figure 1.
- Figure 4 is a front view of the container shown in figure 1.
- Figure 5 is a perspective top rear view of the container shown in figure 1 with a lid.
- Figure 6 is a perspective top front view of the container shown in figure 1 with a lid.
- Figure 7 is a cross section view through the body of the container shown in figure 1 as defined by the section line shown in figure 4.
- the container 1 as shown in figures 1-5 comprises in the main part a sidewall 2, a bottom 3 and a handle 4 pivotable about an axis A.
- the handle 4 is connected to the container 1 via connection points 5.
- the connection points 5 lie on the axis A.
- the volume of the container 1 is the same on both sides of a vertical plane P 1 passing through the connection points 5.
- the plane P 1 furthermore contains the axis A. In this way, the centre of gravity is arranged on the plane P 1 during normal use. In the case of the container shown, normal use occurs both during carrying and when the container is standing on a level surface. It should be mentioned that the term vertical refers to the orientation of the container as shown in the figures. Since the plane P goes passes through the connection points or joints 5 of the handle 4, the container 1 is balanced about the joints 5 of the handle 4.
- the maximal distance d 1 , perpendicular to the plane P 1, from the plane P 1 to the inside surface 6 of the sidewall 2 on a first side 7 of the plane P 1 is smaller than the maximum distance d 2 , perpendicular to the plane P 1 , from the plane P 1 to the inner surface 8 of the sidewall 2 on the second side 9 of the plane P 1 . Due to this arrangement, the centre of gravity of the container can be held quite close to the body of the user during carrying. Furthermore, in the current embodiment the maximum distance is located on a plane P2 which is perpendicular to the plane P1 and which passes through the centre of gravity of the container 1.
- the first side 6 of the container 1 is furthermore essentially straight and parallel to the plane P 1 .
- this side 6 of the container can be rested against the user's body during carrying.
- the form of this side also ensures that the container does not hinder the movement of the user's legs when carrying. Normal cylindrical containers, due to their round shape, roll back and forth on the user's leg, thereby seriously impeding the forwards and backwards motion of the legs.
- the maximum distance, parallel to the axis A, between facing points on the inside surface of the sidewall on the first side 7 of the plane P 1 is larger than the maximum distance, parallel to the axis A between facing points on the inside surface of the sidewall on the other side 9 of the plane P 1 .
- the tangent lines to the horizontal contour lines of the sidewalls at the connection points 5 of the handle are not parallel.
- the tangent line to the sidewall at a first connection point has a positive slope and the tangent line to the sidewall at the second connection point has a negative slope.
- the current embodiment 1 of a container according to the invention is used as a paint container. Therefore, the first side 6 of the container 1 which is essentially straight and parallel to the plane P can also be used for rolling a paint roller up and down on it thereby removing excess paint from the paint roller.
- the container can be sized to accept different sized rollers. For example two standard sizes of rollers are 9" and 10" rollers. By choosing the dimensions of the container such that the first side 6 is at least 10" long, the container can accept both 9" and 10" rollers. Other sizes are also possible in order to accept other sized rollers.
- the current embodiment 1 is formed with a series of protrusions 10 on the inside surface 6 of the sidewall on the first side 7 of the plane P 1 .
- the protrusions 10 could be formed in many different ways. For example, a number of dimples could be formed on the sidewall. Other embodiments should be obvious to the person skilled in the art.
- the first side 6 of the container 1 also comprises a ridge 11.
- the ridge 11 has an arc shaped cross section and is formed as a recess in the outside surface of the first side 6 of the container 1 and as a protrusion in the inner surface of the first side 6 of the container 1.
- the ridge 11 gives extra stiffness to the side 6 of the container. This is especially useful when pressing paint out of a roller as the side wall doesn't distort. If the side wall distorts, then it becomes difficult to get a uniform amount of paint on the roller.
- the protrusions are also formed in such a way that a number of containers can be stacked, one inside the other. If the protrusions protrude too far into the inside of the container, then it will not be possible to stack containers inside each other since the protrusions will prevent one container from being inserted into the other.
- the form of the protrusions of the current embodiment can be seen in figure 7 which shows a cross section view through the body of the container 1. Also from figure 7, it can be seen that the back wall of the container is essentially straight. In this way, the paint is evenly distributed on the roller when rolling on this surface.
- the current embodiment has a number of extra features which result in a number of extra benefits.
- One such feature is that the distance d 3 between the joints 5 of the handle 4 is shorter than the overall width w of the container. This can best be seen in figure 2.
- the handle has an effective range of motion between a first position where the handle is vertical (as shown in the figures) and a second position where the handle is pivoted down such that it is resting on a flange 12 arranged along the upper edge of the outer side 13 of the sidewall 2 on the second side 9 of the plane P 1 .
- the handle can assume only one position. This permits placing two stacks of the containers in a close position, back to back, i.e. with the sides 6 on the first side 7 of the plane P 1 facing each other.
- the above feature could also be provided with other means for preventing the handle from rotating to one side.
- a tab could be arranged on the upper edge of the sidewall on one side of the plane P 1 which stops motion of the handle past a certain point.
- the flange 12 on which the handle 4 rests when in its downward folded position also protects the handle 4 when stacking a number of containers on a pallet. For example, during the stacking of the containers, when an upper container is placed incorrectly, the upper rim of a neighbouring container could come into contact with the handle of an upper container were the flange 12 were not there to protect the handle.
- the flange 12 has a first extra area of protection 14 near the connection points 5 of the handle 4.
- the flange 12 also has a second extra area of protection 15 near the centre of the handle.
- the second extra area of protection 15 is formed with a recessed area 16 such that the user can still easily pivot the handle upwards by gripping the handle with a finger in the recessed area 16 and applying an upwards force.
- Another feature with the current embodiment 1, is that the outer surface 13 of the sidewall 2 on the second side 9 of the plane P 1 of the container has a large surface area due to its curved shape. In this way, a large area is made available for displaying advertising or product information.
- a further feature of the current embodiment 1, is that the curvature of the horizontal contour lines of the sidewall 2 does not change sign.
- the horizontal contour lines can be imagined by taking a number of horizontal cross sections through the sidewall 2 of the container 1. This ensures that it is easy to attach and remove a detachable lid 17 from the rim of the container.
- the container is easier to remove from the mould since the outer surface of the sidewall of the container does not have any concave areas.
- the container is also easier to clean since the inside of the container is always concave.
- the embodiment 1 of a container shown in the figures is also symmetrical about a plane P2, which is perpendicular to the plane P1. This results in a nicely balanced container.
- the container does not have to be symmetrical about a plane perpendicular to the plane P1.
- the container is also slightly conical such that it is easier to stack.
- the bottom 3 is sloped towards the inside surface 6 of the sidewall 2 on the first side 7 of the container. This ensures that when only a bit of remains in the container, it collects on the first side of the container.
- the upper edge of the sidewall 2 of the container 1 is formed with lid connecting means 18.
- the lid connecting means 18 can be formed in many different ways as will be obvious to the person skilled in the art.
- the upper edge of the sidewall 2 of the container 1 can also be reinforced with reinforcing means 19. Different types of reinforcing means should be obvious to the person skilled in the art.
- the handle 4 is also formed with a rib 20.
- the rib 20 increases the stiffness of the handle without significantly increasing the weight of the handle or the material used in the handle.
- the rib 20 ensures that when the container is carried and the handle is bent inwards, the contact between the handle and the rim of the container is a point load which does not apply any moments on the handle. If the entire surface of the handle were to be allowed to come into contact with the rim of the container, then the handle would be twisted which would be uncomfortable for the user.
- Figures 5-6 show the container 1 with a lid 17 mounted upon the container 1 and with the handle 4 folded down. From figure 6 it can be seen how the flange 12 protects the handle 4.
- the top surface 21 of the lid is recessed from the top edge 22 of the lid. In this way, the stacking height of the containers is reduced. This also ensures that an upper container stacked upon a lower container, is very secure against forces acting in a sideways direction.
- Figure 5 also shows that the upper edge of the container comprises two breakaway tabs 23. When the break away tabs 23 are removed, the user can easily reach under the lower edge of the lid 17 which allows him or her to easily remove the lid.
- the lid 17 in this embodiment is of the "Flex-Lid" type, that is to say, the type where the lower rim of the lid needs to be bent upwards before the lid can be removed.
- An example of such a lid is disclosed in GB 2 091 706 .
- the flex lid type lid allows the lower edge of the rim to resist this moment thereby preventing the lid from collapsing.
- the lid 17 is also provided with stiffening ribs 24 along the top edge 22 of the lid.
